I'm actually in a good position with this since I have a current and last gen console and a PC with an FX-6300 and a GTX 960. But I really can't decide what I want to use as my main platform for gaming. These are the reasons for which I'm considering both platforms.
The first of those being cost, an important one for me. I spent about £430 on my PC whereas, factoring in the costs of the bundled games, my PS4 slim was only about £185-ish. Something people throw around as a benefit of PC gaming is that although the upfront costs may be more expensive, the savings you get on games more than make up for that. This may be true, however perhaps not for me. As someone who's not an adult yet, I can't exactly afford to buy all the newest releases or even older games at the frequency that's required to make up for this. Don't get me wrong, you can get some extremely good savings on PC what with Steam sales, humble bundles etc. But because I can't afford all the newest games, I tend to buy more last-gen games as they're pretty cheap now for the most part. But provided I get them pre-owned, a lot of games end up being around the same price on consoles as they are on PC. As for current gen games, I again tend to go for the older games which on PS4 are usually £10 - £20 which I don't think is too bad. This is where the savings really start to come in though on PC. I got Shadow of Mordor, Mad Max and Arkham Knight all for around £3 - £4 which is amazing, on amazon I'd be paying around £10 - £15 for all of these. There's also PS+ which some see as a waste of money, but given the fact I don't have many current-gen games, I think it's an alright deal. In my first year, I got LBP3, Tearaway Unfolded, DiRT 3 and recently Just Cause 3 which I am absolutely loving right now, Killing Floor 2, Life is Strange, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and This War of Mine. And a couple of interesting looking indies on top with still two months (technically three but it'll be up as soon as November's games are out probably) to go. They still wouldn't be my first picks apart from JC3 and I do think Xbox Live has it better but still for £40 it ain't bad. There’s also power consumption, my PC uses more than double the power my consoles use which makes it harder for PC to be worth it for me.
There's also the thing about resolutions, graphics and frame rates which for many is a big selling point of PC. And I do love all these improvements you get on PC, but personally I don’t mind the graphical fidelity consoles offer. I don’t even mind 30fps, as long as it’s consistent enough and I have a controller. Hell, I don’t think I even notice drops to around 27fps because I thought GTA V on PS4 had pretty much a perfect framerate but a digital foundry video actually shows that driving through the busy areas of the city causes the framerate to drop. A lot games coming out for the PS4 have frame rates that stay around the 30 mark. I’m even enjoying Just Cause 3 on PS4, despite it’s terrible performance. However, looking at some of the digital foundry frame rate analyses for games like Far Cry 3, Crysis and Borderlands on PS3 does concern me, and I’m unsure whether I’d be able to enjoy the games at those framerates. I did play Borderlands on PC capped at 20fps with a controller to simulate the worst case scenario and in all honesty, all through not ideal, it was playable and still enjoyable. That was a consistent framerate though and not a fluctuating one like what it would be like on consoles. But, right now I’m playing Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood on PS3 and the performance of the game is really bugging me. Although, I think that’s more the constant stuttering and freezing I’m getting but these are still things I could no doubt improve on PC.
There’s also the other benefits of PC such as mouse and keyboard support, mod support, game capture, in-home streaming etc. Most of these are nice but benefits I can live without like the mouse and keyboard support and modding but the options that PC provides in terms of recording and remote play does have me on the fence a bit. I’ve always seen youtube as something I could maybe get into to as a nice little hobby and a way to earn a little bit of money. The standard PS4 does have this functionality but it’s limited to 720p@30fps and it’s only at a bitrate that’s just about good enough for youtube at that resolution. PC gives me a lot more flexibility with being able to record any game, old and new, at 60fps and any resolution I want with a far higher bitrate than what youtube supports. I also have a unique idea for a video series, however it is very PC centric and I’m not resorting to doing generic lets plays. This whole youtube thing might just end up being a stupid fantasy of mine, but there’s still remote play which could still prove useful. Another feature that I can only use on PS4 games where I can do this on any PC game. There’s also the thing about being able to play older games at great framerates, not having to rely on remasters that cost a lot more and being able to run some PS2 era games on laptops.
Then there’s exclusives. This is a big pull for me towards consoles since the PC exclusives or the “soft-exclusives” like CS:GO have never really appealed to me. But on my playstation consoles, I have a whole plethora of exclusives that do appeal me. There’s also the eastern third-party games (although more of these games are coming on PC now) and some games that just never make it to PC like Destiny or one of my personal favourites, Red Dead Redemption.
There’s also the little things I like about consoles like how everything just works, an easy controller-friendly nice looking UI which means I can just navigate to my games sitting back and get to things with ease, the fact everything works natively with a controller and it’s just a nice little dedicated system. There’s also the trophy hunting, something one of my mates got my into when I had a weird phase where I jumped from PC to PS4 and it’s something I absolutely love. It gives my games a lot more replay value and an incentive to do certain things or to hunt down all the collectables and 100% the game. Steam does have achievements but it feels like they’re just there for the sake of it, they have no value whatsoever and don’t add to anything. A lot of games don’t even have achievements on Steam because they could be split up onto several different external services. Which is another thing I really hate about PC, how everything is split up whereas on consoles everything is under one umbrella. A little bit of paranoia also creeps in, I like having physical game discs because I feel like I’ve actually bought something which I can sell if I want to, I like having a real life collection and I know that they're always going to work if I take care of them. But what happens to my Steam collection if Steam dies, which although unlikely in the near future, it is very possible to happen at some point. And then there’s all the other services like Origin, Blizzard’s thing, the Windows Store etc which are all probably going to die long before Steam does. I’m also not sure I enjoy games as much as I do on consoles as I do on PC. I know it sounds weird, but throughout playing GTA V on PC I spent a lot of time constantly tweaking my settings and when this debate of what platform I should game on started and I was constantly hopping between PC and console, I was playing GTA IV on PC and Saints Row The Third on console and as much as I love GTA games and Rockstar games in general I definitely felt I was enjoying Saints Row The Third a lot more. Maybe I did, or the platform I was playing on had an influence on me. Of that, I’m unsure.
So why not become a hybrid gamer? Well apart from the multi-plats, there’s not really much for me on PC but if I do choose PC, I probably would keep my consoles for the exclusives but a benefit of sticking with consoles for pretty much everything is that I would be able to enjoy the online components of games like Destiny or the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 since if I went mainly PC then I wouldn’t really want to drop £40 or the then £50 every year on PS+.
The social component is something I’m also considering. I literally didn’t have any friends on PC and felt a bit lonely but the majority of my friends are on Playstation and playing GTA Online with my mates was definitely a lot of fun. That could be changing though since one of my mates is building a PC this Christmas and two other friends might be coming over to PC so this point is becoming increasingly moot.
So, in short:
Consoles - Graphics are fine, framerates are fine for the most part, full controller support, only 1 level of DRM on everything, cheaper upfront cost, less power consumption, PS+ free games, trophies, controller-friendly UI, it just works and you can get straight to gaming, physical game discs and exclusives.
PC - Better graphics, framerates and resolution, more options and flexibility, cheaper games, mods, better recording and streaming functionality and the lack of remastered games.
