For the past year, I developed a strong interest in becoming a Youtuber and Twitch streamer. In that time, I researched and purchased the different pieces of tech that I felt would get the job done and help me make my life a little easier. I feel that I’m finally ready to take on the challenges of streaming and look forward to getting more involved with the Twitch community. So, without further-ado here is my first (unofficial) week as a wannabe twitch streamer.
Day 1&2 - The Set-Up
I have a PS4, XBOX and XPS 9560 Laptop that I want to stream from. PS4/XBOX can stream directly to Twitch but it’s in 720p. Shooting for 1080p; 30 or 60 fps. (If you don't know what that means, don't worry about it) Plugged in PS4/XBOX to Elgato HD60 S and connected that to Laptop. Between all my tech items, I have 6 usb cables that need to be plugged into my laptop. My laptop has 2, COUNT THEM TWO USB ports...WD15 Dock FTW! Day 2 was spent downloading and learning all the necessary software components that would help the stream flow and to manage the usb and power cables that became a tangled mess by the end of the weekend.
Day 3&4 - PS4 Stream Test (Offline Single Player - Fallout 4)
I only had a couple of hours each night to test it but set too forever so I only could get 20-30 min of stream time. First test of the stream was making sure the gameplay video and audio were good and balanced. Seemed to be ok. Second and last test of the day was making sure my microphone was being picked up and not under or over-powering the game audio. Everything checked out. The fourth day was testing out my video camera and making sure the quality and focus was correct. CHECK CHECK CHECK! It was a good day!
Day 5 - XBOX Stream Test (Online Multiplayer - Rocket League)
Internet is shit and the stream is laggy as all hell. 220 PING! Are you serious?! Guess I'm forced to stream single player games until I can come up with a better solution or move. $#&% YOU T.W.C! Can’t wait till I’m done with you.
Day 6 - Twitch Profile Update
Spent 12 hours just updating my profile, editing the panels and making buttons...don’t ask but I hope you like it. Learned about streamlabs which is SWEET! but also a lot of fun just to play around with. Probably going to spend more time with developing fun notifications.
Day 7 - Setting Up OBS To Stream Steam Games
The set up was straight forward but there were some games that were not able to be recorded correctly. I'm looking at you Stardew Valley. Regardless, the guides on Reddit and YouTube videos were helpful for this set up. I'll post the helpful links later if any of you are interested.
Whew! I hope you liked reading about my first (unofficial) week as a wannabe twitch streamer! It was such an amazing learning experience. The set-up process was very challenging but seriously a lot of fun. I tend to overcomplicate issues that required only a small tweak here and there but I’m better for it. Over just the past week I developed such an appreciation for the twitch streamers and what goes into their craft. It’s not just a press of a button...I mean it is for some people but to me it’s so much more than that. It's like a puzzle or riddle that you need to solve to go to the next level and with each new level comes even more problems and obstacles to overcome. I'm still learning every day and coming up with different ways to make the stream more personable, relatable and fun for people to watch. If you happen to come across the stream feel free to stop in and say hi. Thank you for reading my first Reddit post! If you have a memorable week streaming or just any advice I would love to read it!
