Why does the Xbox One version of Final Fantasy XV look last gen?

Hey guys, I picked up Final Fantasy XV on Xbox One when it first launched and put around 50 hours into it. I kept complaining to one of my friends about how bad the game looks. He had it on PS4 and reckons it is one of the best looking games on it. I thought he must be crazy. I know the PS4 version is the better version according to reviewers but it couldn't be THAT different, could it?

In my loungeroom I have a 4k HDR TV. I have an Xbox One S and a PS4 Pro that I mainly upgraded to for PSVR. I finally thought stuff it, I'll pick up FFXV on PS4 to compare the difference. It's night and day. I know the pro version is 1800p whereas the Xbox version isn't even 1080p but the Xbox version would look aweful even if it was on Xbox 360. It has to be less than 720p. DVD quality is better than the Xbox version. My friend with a PS4 also upgraded to a pro but reckons the OG PS4 version still looked amazing even compared to on the Pro. I still have an OG PS4, maybe I should try it on that just to see for myself.

I'm certainly not a fanboy of either console but I'm genuinely curious why there is such a difference between the two versions? I am a person that never really notices the difference usually. I can say with all honesty that no other game looks much better or worse on either usually. The console specs aren't that far apart. Surely this game could have been better optimised for Xbox? I mean I have played many awesome looking Xbox games yet this one doesn't even pass as last gen in my opinion.

I really don't want to start a console war but I thought I was going crazy hearing how good this game looks when I'm sitting in front of my TV with the Xbox version thinking my eyes must be giving out. This thing is a blurry mess. If only there was a PC version to really see how good it could look.
