What would a realistic spread of devices be for the NX platform?

I personally believe that NX will probably be split into three separate systems-- Let's call them Nintendo Play, Nintendo Pro, and Nintendo Go (unless Sony still owns that from their PSP Go). The first two would be released in March 2017, while Go would be released in November 2017. The differences between the three would exist to cover different segments of the market Nintendo traditionally appeals to. Nintendo Play and Pro would both cover the home console market, while Go would succeed the 3DS. The differences in the names are done to establish the platform simply as "Nintendo" and its games, which also makes it clear that this is a platform Nintendo is going forward with in the future. N"X", where X is Play, Pro, and Go, or whatever other forms Nintendo decides to develop this platform for. There's No Play Like It.

Nintendo Play would be something of a Vita TV for Go, with Go really only being an underclocked portable version of Play. Play would use something based on Tegra X1 and have performance that is closer to an Xbox One but still noticeably below it, while Go would be similar in power to Play but closer to the Wii U (but still slightly above it). Both of these systems will only use cartridges for their media format (in addition to digital downloads of course), and will focus on software that is not as technically demanding to run.

Go titles would essentially be Wii U level, whereas Play titles would be the same as Go titles but with slightly better performance and some minor exclusive features that make sense when it comes to the move to a living room environment. For example, Smash Bros. on Play (and Pro) would feature 8 player Smash whereas Go can only go up to 4 players. Both are in essence a slightly improved Wii U that’s more of a lateral move in order for Nintendo to provide a cheap (in the case of Play) and accessible way for people to play their first party content. If you know of Motorola’s old smartphone lineup, this would essentially be their Moto G, whereas their Moto X would be the Pro.

Pro would be slightly more powerful than PS4, will be capable of running XBO/PS4 versions of AAA games, and will be able to accept discs in addition to the aforementioned cartridges. Nintendo would ensure that all of their first party software is capable of running on all three systems, making use of cartridges exclusively (due to Nintendo’s history of their games being rather compact in terms of size), while it is up to developers to determine whether or not they will make use of the significant power boost Pro provides relative to the other two systems (and whether or not they will release software on disc or cartridge).

If a developer decides to make a game for Play, it must also run on Go and Pro with no problems. A game using the power boost of Pro will not have to run on the other two systems and would thus be exclusive to Pro. The Wii U is discontinued immediately due to the Play essentially taking its place as Nintendo's entry-level system (as opposed to their old system being reduced in price in a weird form like the Wii was). Go would be around the size of a closed 3DS XL, feature the same controls as Play/Pro. Only one 4.7" 720p capacitive touch screen, no dual screen setup or 3D.

Nintendo Play would debut for something in the ballpark of $150-$200, while Pro would be released for $300-330. Go's release is in late October/early November largely so that the price can be right and to also work as a sort of soft relaunch of the NX platform for the holiday season. A solid lineup of titles (complete with old ass ports like the Wii U got) secured for Play/Pro launch would be:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Play/Pro/Go)
  • Super Smash Bros. (Play/Pro/Go)
  • FIFA 17 (Play/Pro/Go)
  • Overwatch (Play/Pro/Go)
  • Rocket League (Play/Pro/Go)
  • Skylanders Imaginators (Play/Pro/Go)
  • Just Dance 2017 (Play/Pro/Go) (Not sure how that would work on Go...)
  • Unknown Ubisoft Game (Play/Pro/Go)
  • For Honor (Pro)
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda (Pro)
  • Final Fantasy XV (Pro)
  • Tekken 7 (Pro)

Super Smash Bros. drops the "for ___" subtitle and simply becomes "Super Smash Bros.". It will come bundled with the system in an odd, rather neutered form with only the original 8 characters and a limited stage selection, but with full access to multiplayer modes, including online play, where one is able to play with people who own the full game. Characters can be bought individually at a cost that eventually adds up to $10 more than buying the game outright would, while amiibo for compatible characters can also be scanned in so you can own that character. A normal, retail release for $60 will also be available. The game would launch with Ice Climbers to differentiate itself from the Wii U/3DS versions of the game. These moves are made in part as Nintendo's plan to allow everyone who purchases an NX to have some exposure to several of their IPs right out of the box, while also establishing Smash Bros. as a sort of service (optional if you just buy the normal $60 game) due to its history of being a game with legs. Upcoming games can be promoted within Smash Bros. by having a character or stage released for free for a month before the game's release. Owners of the Wii U version are able to receive a digital copy of the full game for free.

Release schedule for the first year following its March launch will most likely be good due to Nintendo making games that will run on both their console and handheld for the first time. There's no need to make two separate versions of Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, etc. You can focus more people on working on bigger projects like Breath of the Wild that add to the reasons to buy the console rather than scavenging up people to make smaller filler titles like Tri Force Heroes or Amiibo Festival. Additionally, you have Wii U games that were essentially just held off and worked on a bit further so they could be ported to Play/Go and "remastered" for Pro.

  • April - Pikmin 4
  • May - Animal Crossing
  • July - Retro's game (featured in Smash Bros in some way)
  • September - Fire Emblem
  • October - Splatoon sequel (Inkling in Smash Bros with a Splatoon stage)
  • November - Mario Kart
  • February 2018 or November 2018 - Super Mario game

Minecraft released sometime in June or not very several years (due to Microsoft not wanting to promote NX's launch or holiday season), while most PS4/XBO versions of AAA third party games for the next couple of years come to Pro (not the Neo/Scorpio versions).

I'm guessing that Retro's title got moved from Wii U to NX, and I'm sure that a similar port and "remaster" process probably occurred with Pikmin and Animal Crossing. I'm also guessing that Splatoon was originally destined for a port, but ultimately it was decided to develop a full fledged sequel to launch concurrently with Go to provide a suitable launch game for it in Japan where portables and Splatoon are more popular. In addition to the "new type of" Super Mario at E3, there might be some teaser of Metroid NX to prove that Nintendo is still committed to the series. Maybe a reveal for some small scale Game Freak game (like HarmoKnight or that Elephant game). I wouldn't be surprised if they adapt Kirby into 3D World type gameplay either. I could also see Nintendo possibly pulling a Sony style Street Fighter V but with Monster Hunter to finally pull it onto modern hardware since Capcom seems so reluctant to move past PSP visuals and also to reaffirm its place on a handheld system. Expecting a Yokai something too.

What do you guys think? Could you see Nintendo release even more devices, or just two? I think the difference between Play and Pro would essentially be like what Sony/Microsoft are doing right now with their .5 generation upgrades, but done to appeal to the market that Nintendo has usually gone after and cheaply so that they can get it out to as many people as possible (seeing as they seem to be trying to get their name out there again after the post Wii collapse). Would they continue to stick with a separation between handhelds and consoles? I don't see it as being likely but maybe someone can provide a good enough reason to suggest otherwise.

[ETS2] Frame drops/stop-start effect

I've been getting this super annoying thing happen to me in ETS2 - The game runs smoothly for a few seconds, then goes into almost like slow motion for a few seconds, then comes back to normal. Admittedly I'm playing on a laptop, and I get an average of 20 FPS - but that'd be bearable for me as long as there wasn't this frame drop. I've watched the FPS counter as it happens but it doesn't seem to actually be dropping frames so I'm not sure what to call it.

It detracts from the fun a lot. Like I said, low frame rates are bearable, but not these drops. I'm playing with everything on low/disabled - 1280x720 @ 25% scaling. One interesting thing to note is that if I alt tab out then back into the game, I can play at a solid 60FPS for around a minute until the game kinda shits itself.

I've tried ETS 2008 and I can run it fine, but it doesn't work well at all with an Xbox One controller (what I'm using)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Please Help Me Figure Out the RIGHT setup for VGA Xbox 360 (4:3 VGA Monitor)

I've just started messing around with the 360 on my VGA monitor - I really like it, it looks great, and the Arcade titles are pretty cool on this monitor.

The list of VGA resolutions supported by the Xbox 360 is kind of crazy. The way I figure it, MS kind of threw something at the wall, hoping to hit the more common native resolutions of LCD panels at the time. The result is the oddest mish-mash of aspect ratios, with (as far as I can tell) only TWO native 4:3 resolutions. Here are the list of resolutions supported by the machine, and their associated aspect ratios:

*640x480 - 4:3

*848x480 - 16:9?

*1024x768 - 4:3

*1280x720 - 16:9

*1280x768 - 5:3

*1280x1024 - 5:4

*1360x768 - 85:48 (~16:9)

*1440x900 - 16:10

*1680x1050 - 16:10

*1920x1080 - 16:9

In terms of gaming on this CRT, what thought I was looking for was actually a 4:3 ratio, so that I can have the image scan to the edge of the monitor, so I started at 1024x768. But many Xbox 360 games run at 720p (or around there) with a select few (many Arcade titles) pushing up to 1080p. So unless I run at a higher resolution I'm losing detail in the image. Therefore, I think that I'm stuck with the following choices:

  • Manually letterboxing the image (my monitor remembers my width and height setting per resolution, but doesn't detect and set it automatically for me)

  • Manually pillarboxing the image

At first, I thought "well, I should pillarbox" and use the 1280x1024 resolution, getting as high a resolution as possible, while losing as little screen real estate as possible. But in games that support 16:9 only, the result is windowboxing, and pretty bad. And games that are 4:3 (I tried an Xbox back compat game) aren't right either. I'm either doing it wrong, or this is the wrong resolution.

So - anyone else have this issue (360 gaming on a 4:3 VGA CRT)? Your solution? Any suggestions?

Worth buying new monitor for XboneS?

With the new Xbox One Slim coming out and it having 4k capability and HDR, is it worth upgrading my current monitor (BENQ RL2460HT)? <- The BenQ was an upgrade from a ~10yr 50" Toshiba 1080i/720p projection TV (the 3-4 ft deep TVs).

I have had the BenQ for about a month, but I am already thinking I would like to upgrade and/or buy a separate one for cinema. I use the BenQ primarily to play Destiny, and watch TV/Movies. It works fine for gaming, its okay for TV/movies - go figure; it IS a TN gaming monitor not an IPS panel.

Previously it wasn't really worth it as the XB1 will only output 1080p anyway (no PCMR here ...yet). With the new XB1S is it going to be more beneficial to get a separate monitor or upgrade?

Budget: shrugs I have some money, but I'm not looking to buy an ultrawide curved display because that is just too pricey to me.

Can't launch Avalaunch

Hey guys, so a couple of weeks ago I took my 1st gen Xbox 1.3 out of its box and decided to flash the TSOP, install a new harddrive, etc. I softmodded it years ago and never had any problems with it. So anyway, the TSOP flash went well and it runs everything I throw at it (apps, games and even the original dashboard). I also got component cables and enabled 480p/720p (which makes quite a nice improvement). The only thing that is bugging me now is that I just CAN'T launch Avalaunch. The default dash is UnleashX and I also have the MS dash and EvoX installed, both works fine but Avalaunch just hangs at the boot screen. I found other .zip, same thing. Anything I'm missing? So far it's the only .xbe that isn't working. I don't NEED it except that it would be great for nostalgia purposes lol

[Request] Can /u/B_FTW GET A HELL YEAH! Or Can you Smell what's he's cooking?!

INTRODUCTION

Hey there /r/GiftOfGames community I'm back...and betta than eva! and I'm here to request WWE 2K16 it's literally the only game on my wishlist the game just seems so perfect for a hardcore wrestling fan like me.Let me tell about my wrestling history from The Golden Era to The Attitude Era to The Ruthless Aggression Era to even The PG/Reality/New Era I've stuck through WWE's ups and downs I've watched different promotion and enjoyed them all exceptforTNA

I don't just stick to one wrestling promotion I watch all of them from WWE to NJPW to ROH to PWG to hell even TNA itisshitthough. So let's stop rambling and let me take you on my wrestling journey....

GOLDEN ERA/MY ROOTS

I started out watching wrestling in the wrestling promotion you all probably know it is the WWE previously know as the WWF.The person that introduced me to wrestling wouldn't be someone you'd expect it was my mother.Yepyepyep the person that is supposed to shield you from the dangerous parts of the world. The first event I watched was Wrestlemania 13 even though I didn't watch all of it I only watched two matches out of it (or at least that's all I remember watching).

The first match I watched was Stone Cold vs Bret Hart in a No Disqualification Submission Match the match is fucking legendary it was back then and it still is.We had Bret Hart turning heel when he kept the sharpshooter locked in until Ken Shamrock had to forcefully get him off Austin. And we had Austin turning into the resilient babyface. The match had one of the best if not the best double turns in wrestling history. The match is a great watch I reccommend it even if you don't like wrestling.

The next match I remember was The Undertaker vs Sycho Sid.It was the main event of the night.I could only remember the final moments of the match. It was when Bret came back to the ring after getting powerbombed by Sid and beat the fuck out of Sid with a chair. When Sid recovered he was distracted by Bret and The Undertaker finished the match with a Tombstone Piledriver. The match was not good at all I can honestly barely remember it but I know that it wasn't and still isn't good.

This event is what started off probably one of the most entertaining eras in WWF/E history.Which I'll be talking about next..........

THE ATTITUDE ERA/MONDAY NIGHT WARS

After Wrestlemania 13 we had the beginning of The Attitude Era if I remember correctly this era purely happened because of WCW having higher ratings than the WWF.It was basically WWF saving their business and boy did it work! WCW had some of the top tier talents and even some WWF wrestlers sports entertainers that made WWF fucking famous one of the biggest names were Hull Cogan Hulk Hogan pretty sure you've heard that name before.WCW fucking bought Hogan with a better contract than WWE had.

One of the most memprable storylines was The Undertaker's Ministry of Darkness. The Undertaker was basically a Satanic Lord at this point in his career boy did he look scary he was listening to a Higher Power whom I will not spoil but holy fuck was it surprising. Also It was him Austin ,It was him all along! .

Onto one of the most controversial moments of the Attitude Era The Montreal Screwjob it involved the boss Vince McMahon screwing over Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1997 it was believed to be an unscripted moment because Vince didn't want a guy who was probably going to leave to go to WCW leaving with his company's main title.Bret went on a fucking tantrum spitting in McMahon's face and motioning WCW to the crowd. Was it planned? You decide.

Next Era ..............

THE RUTHLESS AGGRESSION ERA/BRAND SPLIT/INVASION

Ok remember WCW? Vince bought them out.Yep Vince bought the company of WCW and he bought most of the WCW wrestlers contracts. So this eventually lead to the Invasion Angle it was basically WWE vs WCW vs ECW.Well when this angle was over WWE had a fuck ton of wrestlers on their hands. So WWE decided to do a Brand Split/RAW vs Smackdown.

This was a step in the right direction at first but Smackdown seemed to miles better than RAW.Smackdown had better wrestlers great storylines and even better memorable moments.Smackdown had feel good moments like this : Eddie Guerrero winning the WWE Title or even debuts of people who are big names right now like John Cena's debut.Overall Smackdown was better than RAW by far.

But there was one match at Wrestlemania 20 that completely made me lose hope in the WWE.It was Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar The match was sisliked by the crowd since both wrestlers were going to leave the company after this event.Nothing could save the match not even Stone Cold Steve Austin being the special guest referee.

Needless to say I stopped watching WWE hell watching wrestling as a whole after that match....which lead to.

MY WRESTLING CAREER/START OF WRESTLING GAMING

I started having backyard wrestling shows with my cousins and our friends.I would go over to my cousins house almost every Friday so we were consistent. My cousins and our friends were huge wrestling fans and some of our friends stilled watched wrestling after that match between Lesnar and Goldberg. But we decided to start our own wrestling federation we were VTW Violent Televised Wrestling we weren't televised so yeah stillbetterthanTNA we had some of the goofiest storyline and some of the shittiest wrestling matches surely Botchamania worthy.I have about 2 of my favorite storys we made up.

The first story we had was Bigfoot. One of my friends played the role of Bigfoot and he would come out and attack wrestlers randomly after a match we had literally no idea when he would attack he literally came out when he felt like it and boy he wasn't rare he came out for almost all our matches. We were never prepared so we booked a match it was a Handicap match 5 v 1 it was The Trigger Warning vs The Bigfoot. They beat the shit out of Big Foot then again they beat the shit out of everyone. That was the end of that storyline and the end of Bigfoot.

The second story would have to be Finale Star(me) vs Trigger Warning it started when the leader of Trigger Warning/Voxx challenged me to a match at Revelations,I accepted and we fought it out at Revelations I ended up winning but when I did Trigger Warning attacked me and said at Pandemonium it will be Voxx vs Finale Star in a Falls Count Anywhere match. And holy shit it was the best match I had during my time in VTW.The match had high spots and extreme spots. We had people jumping off high structures and people getting Piledriven. In the end Trigger Warning beat me up and Voxx delivered the Voxx Block (Tiger Bomb Piledriver) about 3 of them in the entire match to finish me off that was my last match in VTW and the end of VTW.

During 'The VTW Era' I played some wrestling games such as Fire Pro Wrestling Returns and King of Colosseum 2 two great old school games! This was where I started my gaming journey.

WWE 2K14/RETURN TO WWE PROGRAMMING

During my time away from WWE Programming as I said I didn't just watch the WWE I watched New Japan Pro Wrestling, Ring Of Honor hell I even watched Total Nonstop Action and many more I enjoyed watching these promotions but none of them gave me the WWE feel (NJPW is great but not the WWE feel). So being a hardcore gamer now.I decide to go into WWE Gaming.Which got me to WWE 2K14

WWE 2K14 was great!2K had just gotten the liscense to publish the WWE games. But THQ had the publishing title before this. But 2K14 was amazing let me briefly talk about some of its features.

Community Creations - Holy Hell was this paradise! With me watching external programming and all I got created wrestlers, arenas and titles from promotions other than the WWE it was great to have other wrestlers in the game and it added so much to the next mode I'll talk about....

Universe Mode - Having the ability to create your own shows and even your own promotions was amazing you were basically the owner of the WWE and you now call the shots you determine your rivalries, champions and shows.Hell you didn't even need to have WWE shows as I said you could download arenas and championships. So you could create your own show or recreate an existing promotion outside of the WWE.It was easily my favorite mode out of the game!I love having control over companies since I'm a fan of fantasy booking this was the perfect mode for me.The next mode brought back the feels to me.

30 Years of Wrestlemania - This mode was magical. It was so nostalgic! It had Wrestlemania moments from my 2nd favorite match Bret Hart vs Steve Austin and it even had Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar. It was the mode that brought back memories for me.It had different objectives that triggered wrestlemania moments it was great and I loved it!

After 2K14 I decided to get back into WWE programming..They had a couple new faces but they were easy to get used to.But the moments that stills fucks me up today. It's when the Undertaker's Wrestlemania Streak came to an end by Brock Lesnar holy fuck I cried like a bitch when this happened since The Undertaker is my favorite wrestler.I'm still trying to get over it 2 years later. But let's move on from this tragic moment

WWE 2K15/REALITY ERA

When 2k14 got obscure I decided to pick up WWE 2K15 for the XBOX 360.The game wasn't good at all I honestly hated it.The game had some good game modes and features but the gameplay itself feeks lacking and just not good let me talk about if for some time.

Community Creations - This was basically the same except a fuck ton of features got removed creating arenas and championships got removed which really took away from the Universe Mode experience but I managed to handle it pretty well with the created superstars I'd say here's what I did......

Universe Mode - I decided to do an Invasion angle of my own I decided to download superstars outside of WWE.It was mostly NJPW wrestlers though so it was Wrestlemania 31 WWE vs NJPW it was great this was one part of the game I could actually love! But moving on.

2K Showcase - This was basically what took the place of 30 Years of Wrestlemania. The mode was 'great' it had some good ass rivalries it had 'CM Punk vs John Cena' and 'Triple H vs Shawn Michaels' this mode had cutscenes that gave life to the rivalries I fucking enjoyed it not more than Universe Mode though.

Since I managed to keep up with WWE TV I saw the emergence of the Reality Era.The company basically said that they were entertainers and the storylines were pre-determined (not that explicitly but they basically didn't try to keep that 'it's real factor' .I enjoyed it it was a good time but still enjoyed extrenal programming more. Also the NXT brand was growing with some people I remember seeing in external programss such as Prince Devitt now known as Finn Balor and Kevin Steen now known as Kevin Owens. Now to talk about the amazing game that this entire post is dedicated to.

WWE 2K16/THE NEW ERA

My trustable XBOX 360's disc drive stopped opening so I couldn't play WWE 2K14 or 2k15 anymore which was sad but WWE had a new game releasing at the time 'WWE 2K16'.When the game dropped I saw some gameplay and it was fucking amazing. The graphics were phenomenal, the gameplay was amazing and the game modes were improved let me talk about them.

Community Creation - With the return of creating arenas and championships the 'my company' factor was back. You could create wrestlers who looke dlike theirselves in real life with the new face scanning technology.Overall looks like a great feature.

My Career - This mode was in WWE 2K15 but only for current gen consoles. The game mode seems to have taken a big step up from the last game letting you go through The Performance Center to NXT to The Main Roster to The Hall Of Fame.Imagine if I got the game gifted to me I could create Finale Star and have him go through the WWE.The mode looks fucking great!

2K Showcase - This time the mode revolved around the Rattlesnake Stone Cold Steve Austin. It goes through his career which is a fucking amazing idea props to 2K for doing that.It goes from Stone Cold's time in WCCW all the way to him facing The Rock. The mode itself looks great and 2K obviously put tons of effort into this mode leaving no stone unturned.

Universe Mode - With the Creation Suite overhaul letting you create arenas and championships now you can create your own promotion again. The mode looks better than ever and you could make some great dream rivalries like Hulk Hogan vs John Cena or even another NJPW vs WWE storyline who knows?

This game had so many superstars from NXT it was unbelievable. The roster was the biggest of all time. And the DLC actually makes sense. With Community Creations you can get some of the WWE's newest signees like Austin Aries,Shinsuke Nakamura,AJ Styles,Jay Lethal and many more!Especially with the PC modding community you could get these superstars as mods here is the biggest modding community for WWE 2K16 it is Smacktalks.

CONCLUSION/EXTRA INFORMATION

Well I just took you on my history in wrestling.I hope you enjoyed reading as I took about 5 hours to write this one time it this time. But I really put a lot of effort into this submission it's not like some other people's post who just say 'Give me this game pls'.I took you through my journey in pro-wrestling from My Roots to The Attitude Era to The Ruthless Aggression Era to VTW and so on...I'm not just an ordinary wrestling fan wrestling is my heart and soul I love wrestling.I love evrything about it even the shitty moments.I love games and I love wrestling games the most. This game could let me :

Help! TV screen keeps flickering and flashing a lot

DELL LCD W4200ED (42 inch TV). Service tag: 6B6FF51 Express service code: 13736619109 Serial number: TW-0X6522-70643-4AK-0017

Connected through an HDMI cable to other appliances: PS3, Xbox, etc.

Lets me play for a few hours on the HDMI input but then the screen starts flickering and flashing repeatedly.

I've tried unplugging the power from both systems and the HDMI cord then plugging each one back in from system to TV and still get the same problem. Changed resolution to only support 720p instead of full 1080 and the problem still happens. Also tried changing HDMI cords.

WHAT THE HELL!?!

Submitted by SupremeBootyMessiah | #Specialdealer Special Offer Online Shopping Store 2016

Same resolution but 1 looks worse?

Ok so I have an Xbox 360.

The xbox 360 can only play up to 720p, but on my 1080p TV the xbox looks so much better than my 720p TV, even though the xbox is only playing at 720p anyway? Why??

Submitted by SmGSwatted | #Specialdealer Special Offer Online Shopping Store 2016

Do you think Battlefield 1 will run at a higher resolution than 720p?

I'm definitely picking up Battlefield 1 on the day of release but I'm wondering if DICE will be able to make the game run at a higher resolution on Xbox One compared to Battlefield 4 and Hardline. Both games run at 720p on Xbox One and 900p on PS4.

Do you think it's possible for DICE to finally push Xbox One to atleast 900p or atleast a higher resolution than 720p on Xbox One without sacrificing performance and detail?

Submitted by MuscledRMH | #Specialdealer Special Offer Online Shopping Store 2016

How? (Serious question)

How can I be good (to my standard) right when I get on in the morning, and then take a break and be completely trash when I get back on?

Seriously, I get on, load up rocket league trainer and can hit a good percent of the shots. Play some games and keep up the consistency, then get off for an hour or so to eat. When I get back on, I can't hit anything in game, or in practice on the trainer. This happens every day. I'm also decent late at night.

I recently started playing on Pc, coming from Xbox, also transitioning from my 720p 32" tv to my 1080p 24" monitor, maybe that has something to do with it? Though I feel that I'm a much better player overall after the change, just much more inconsistent.

I'm about a challenger 2-3 player, but play like a prospect 1 at times, and a star at others. I'm really tired of the inconsistencies in my play.

Does anyone else experience this? Is there a reason to why this happens, and is there a solution?

I bought Final Fantasy XIII on Steam, are there any 'tips' to actually play it? Or should I just refund it...

I've been dying to replay Final Fantasy XIII for a while now. When I saw it was on sale on Steam, I pulled the trigger. The reviews were mostly positive and I heard there was a patch that enabled some resolution settings. However, it doesn't seem like it's going to run well for me.

On my first boot up, it crashed. I tried to run it in 1080p Fullscreen, 1024 x 1024 Shadow Res, and x4 AA. Then I dropped it down to 720p and it runs, but the opening cutscene stutters like crazy! I tried to start a new game and that cutscene also stutters like crazy. I haven't actually got to the game itself yet because of the stutters. I found a 'tip' on how to reduce the stutter, by selecting Adaptive V-Sync in the 3D settings but that didn't change anything.

I have a pretty good rig so I'm shocked that it isn't running well. Is it even worth trying to play on PC? It seems like this port is horrible. I'd love to play XIII again but man...I don't know what to do.

EDIT:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wXbbhuJQqE

This is how it appears for me

EDIT 2:

Plugging in an Xbox One controller via USB solved all stuttering. Weird.

Basically if i can change the region for the payment settings ill lose 50% of the games I have and all my online progress. (might have to switch to an Xbox lol). Seriously though this sucks and is a big waste of money if it cant be changed........any suggestions?

Getting an Xbox One.

I have had my PS4 ever since 2014 but seriously considering trading it in for an Xbox One. PS4 is an amazing piece of hardware, don't get me wrong, but god, do I hate the controller. While not going into too much detail, the triggers are over sensitive on every single PS4 controller I've bought (Around 5). As you can assume, when I'm running from someone in battlefield and accidentally ADS, causing me to run slower, the person normally kills me which is extremely frustrating. As you can tell, I am a HUGE Battlefield fan, its basically all I play. I was wondering if the Xbox controller has super sensitive triggers too, or if they have a bit of a deadzone so I can rest my fingers on them. (I don't care about graphics, only gameplay, so someone please do NOT mention anything about 720p and yada yada yada). Thanks in advance.

Xbox One Display Issues

I own both a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox One, and have generally preferred playing on the PS4, as it seemed like the Xbox One had frankly terrible visuals. I chalked it up to the Xbox having weaker hardware, but I recently did some research and discovered that many games should be running at the same resolution on the two consoles. It looks with many games (Halo 5, Tomb Raider, Far Cry Primal, Overwatch) as though the game is displaying at 720p, if not lower. The images are very pixelated and blurry, especially compared to the same games on the PS4. I'm playing on a 1080p TV. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere, or some other way to fix the issue?

TL;DR My Xbox games look pretty bad, and it seems like they should look better than they do. Is there a setting I should search for?

Need recommended hardware for capturing Xbox one.

Hi everyone! I'd like to capture some of my ark Xbox gameplay and I'm not sure what kind of capture device I should look at given the pic hardware I have access to.

  • surface pro 2 i5 2.4ghz (I think) 4xxx cpu, 4gb of ram
  • surface pro 3 i3 1.5ghz 4xxx cpu, 4gb of ram

All I want to do is record about an hour or so of gameplay and editing it into a 10 - 20 min video. I don't expect to stream given my surface pro hardware. Thinking 720p 30fps stuff.

I was thinking of getting a used elgato hd, the USB 2.0 one because it seems to do what I want. I can get one for $60.

Can I record my elgato footage to a USB 3.0 memory stick? Each surface machine has 10-15 gb free on the SSD so I'd want to make sure I have enough room by using a 32gb USB stick.

Anyone have experience recording on the surface pro devices? From the system requirements on elgatos page, sounds like only my wife's pro 2 would be able to handle the capture because the pro 3 is only 1.5ghz dual core.

Any input is great!

I was also checking out some capture hardware that captures to a USB stick or sd card directly instead of needing a computer. Then I can just use the pc for editing and rendering.

Xbox Now or Wait for S

Let's just get straight to the details...

Don't have any of the new systems

Love Madden (gets more hours than any other game most years)

Love NBA 2k

Love Halo

Love Metal Gear

Currently Own a 360 and looking to get a new console soon

70% of my friends own Xbox One

I hear PS4 is the better system

Own a 50' 720p TV

Love multiplayer gaming

Normally don't play exclusives (except Halo but I can live without it)

Own a Wii U with it's bigger games

I'm getting to that stage in life where I'm married, have a career, probably have kids within the next year or so I'm not able to play games quite as often as I would like. I do want a new system though to be able to play the new Madden and 2K games. We watch a lot of Netflix so this will probably be used for that as well. I'd really rather keep my purchase as cheap as possible, but I don't want to be cheap just to be cheap. So my question is this, should I get one of the current Xbox bundles or wait for the Xbox One S? The bundles are pretty amazing right now. The Spring Bundle was pretty amazing (1TB xbox, extra controller, Halo, Gears of War, Rare Replay and that Ori game for $299). That's really tempting, but should I wait for the new xbox in august? Just for the 500GB system, it'll be $299 with no games or extra controllers. I absolutely plan on buying Madden in August when it comes out and I'm sure there will be bundles with it. Should I wait for that? Any suggestions?

LPT: Use Internet Explorer or Safari to stream Netflix. Other browsers such as firefox, opera and chrome are limited to 720p!

Even though you can manually force the bitrate, Chrome, firefox and opera can't stream 1080p! Using IE or Safari will solve this.

Source

Edit: Its also worth pointing out if you're using windows 8 / 10 you can get the netflix app which not only supports 1080p but also 5.1 surround sound!

Edit2: Loads of people asking about all different setups, so heres what people have generally been saying:

Xbox one, PS4 and the native windows app will support any resolution Netflix will stream and also support 5.1 surround sound.

Microsoft Edge will do 1080p.

No browsers will do surround sound.

The cause is apparently Netflix DRM based and therefore won't affect other services unless they do the same.

Apparently "Chrome on ChromeOS does not have this limitation and will do 1080p."

Should I upgrade my current monitor (Xbox one use only)

Hey Guys I bought this BenqGL2760H last summer after upgrading from a 32" JVC 720p HDTV.

I've read some negative things regarding some of the specs on this model like the TN Panel, the resolution compared to the 27"screen size(ETC) It makes me wonder if I'm settling for a way lesser image quality & experience playing games.

Here's the Monitor I'm currently using :

http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16824014378&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-Mobile&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-Mobile-_-pla-_-Monitors+-+LCD+Flat+Panel-_-N82E16824014378&gclid=CJP6p8PduM0CFQuPaQod5UIMew&gclsrc=aw.ds

So do you guys think it's worth investing in a new monitor (most likely 4K/HDR for Scorpio) or am I fine using my current model till Scorpio launches next Christmas?

Thanks!

Multi-use TV recommendations?

I'm looking to buy a new TV that I would mostly use for Xbox One until I move into a new place where I would use it in the bedroom. I've been looking through mainly Amazon and Best Buy to see what I'd like and I'm having some trouble picking something out.

There's a few issues I'm having with deciding what to get. I'm leaning towards a 1080p (over a 720) but also don't know what size I want. I think a 32" would be small enough to use for games and big enough to see from about 10 feet away in bed, but seeing as how I don't own a 32" TV I'm not exactly sure. The other issue the size brings up is that it makes be question if going for the 1080 over the 720 is actually worth it. I've seen the graph about distance and size and when the difference between the two is noticeable but I feel like I'm right in the middle of that. Despite the graph some people swear you can tell the difference regardless and others swear you can't. There's also the fact that most (if not all) stuff is able to output at 1080p so I think that might be the right call in the long-run. I know there's 4k and HDR now but I don't have anything that supports it, let alone $2000 to spend on one.

Sorry for the long background, but I guess that leads to these questions: Do you all think 32" is an appropriate size? Is the 1080p worth it?

Best Buy has a Sharp 32" 1080p at about $170 that has good reviews and Amazon has a Samsung with the same specs that's right at $200. Is there really any difference between the two? Would spending more money (above $200) make any real impact? I'm planning on using a Chromecast so I'm not looking for a Smart TV or anything like that.

Sorry again for this long-ass post and thanks in advance for the help! I know there's a lot of questions in here so if anyone can answer even one of them I'd appreciate it.

I can't get my Xbox to display anything other than 480i. Help!

I'm running XBMC 1.1, on a late 2002 Xbox with the HD AV adapter sending component cables and optical audio out. I went in to the soft mod settings and enabled 5.1 as well as 480p, 720p, and 1080i. But when I pop in Soul Calibur II or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, I still only get 480i despite those games supporting 720p. Any ideas?

Looking ahead for new TV's?

So I've had my current tv now for at least 4 years, maybe more, and I've started looking around for a new one to get the best quality from my xbox one, but also to have a pretty good TV for when the new console comes out.

My current TV is a 32 inch 720p tv, so its pretty basic. I've also had problems with the display size because it doesn't always show the whole picture (edges are sometimes cut off). I'm looking at 4k tvs because its said the next xbox will support that, but my tv also cant be huge because I still live in the dorms.

I was wondering what are some TVs that you guys are using or looking at that are not thousands of dollars, but will do a pretty good job at making a good experience.

So there are the popular YouTubers......

So there are the popular YouTubers who always go on saying stuff like "I earn 100 subscribers a second" and they always dismiss it like it's nothing. But here's the thing - Yes, I understand that at that point, it's just numbers for them. As harsh as it may seem and even though they say stuff like "I love all of you. Every single one of you!", but we all know that that's not possible. They don't understand that people like their content, they subscribe and each and every one of them are a real person because at the point they're at, how could they imagine 10,000,000+ people all at once?

This is where it frustrates YouTubers like me. Because we are small channels and we have a hard time growing, we cherish every single subscriber we get. I still get excited every single time I see a little red dot by the notification sign with the number 1 in it. It may be one comment or one subscriber, but for people like me, this means everything.

I have been on YouTube for over five years spanning over three accounts. The account that I have now and will keep for good has 57 subscribers. However, I pour my heart and soul into YouTube and get little in return. I have over 150 videos, I've been on YouTube for 13 months and have gotten 18,000 views. Here's the problem - I see channels appearing fresh and new time to time that get the same amount of subscribers in a year in a bloody DAY. Now, these people upload 3 minute long vlogs and gaming videos in 720p 30fps with a bitrate lower than the amount of times my grandmother can do sit-ups in a minute. I upload in 1080p 60fps with a 30,000 kbps bitrate and SOMEHOW I get an average of 9-15 views per video. Now, I have had the odd video or two that has skyrocketed for a short amount of time, one being one of the very first showcases of Assassin's Creed II when it was available for Backwards Compatibility on XBOX ONE. That video now has 8,141 views. To me, that was the biggest achievement in all the time I have been on YouTube, but it's not the content to gain subscribers from.

Some of us YouTubers with low sub counts put more effort into their videos than (for example) PewDiePie. We buy the most expensive things we can afford to make our content better. We put hours, even DAYS of effort into a video or two. We take our blood, sweat and tears and sign our content with it hoping that we will be noticed. But alas, we do not. Most of us do it for fun, and I admit, I don't do it for the subscribers either. But we most certainly deserve more than what we have and get.

Thanks - Vivirin (Also my YouTube name)

Why are these people so naïve.

Now I know an opinion is an opinion, but last night I dusted off the XB1 and turned it on to get in touch with some "online friends". Unfortunately, none of them own a PC..I respect that. I usually keep my mouth shut when I hear these guys watch CGI trailers for their console exclusive 720p 30fps games, BUT there is one asshole who singles me out for playing PC..like im a plague, an outcast. So what did I do? I enlightened that nigga, I hit them with the facts, and he responded with some weak as uneducated opinions. at the end of the convo I destroyed his hype for the new Xbox Scorpio by saying, "TBH..at this point you might as well invest in a PC. Or you can stay being a sheep and follow the herd while these console manufactures make holes in your pocket."

What do you guys think?

Resolution, Frame Rates, and Project Scorpio: ELI5'd For You

Phil Spencer has done his best to be open and honest about Project Scorpio, but a lot of his statements are being taken out of context and causing confusion. I see people asking over and over again what Project Scorpio means for games they already have on Xbox One. I'm going to try and clear it up as simply as possible for you.

Resolution & Dynamic Rendering

Every game developer has to make a choice during the development cycle as to engine priorities. Do they want to prioritize speed and frame rate (measured in frames per second, or fps), or go for resolution and higher quality artwork? Unlike PC, they can't just throw everything out there and hope the player will upgrade their hardware or adjust the settings as needed. There are really three options for console developers here, given that they're working with a limited amount of horsepower within the confines of the console hardware:

  • 900p or 1080p/30-fps: Here, the developer is prioritizing image quality over speed. Games that employ this configuration include Destiny, and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Typically, they'll have richer, real-time effects and lighting, and look pretty much what people expect of the "current" generation.

  • Sub-FullHD/60-fps: Here, the developer is prioritizing speed and responsiveness over image quality, and choosing to render in a sub-FullHD resolution to ensure a better chance of the engine maintaining 60-fps (FullHD being an idiotic marketing term for 1920x1080 resolution, or 1080p). Battlefield 4 and Titanfall both employ this technique, both rendering around 720p and shooting for 60-fps. Call of Duty has also done this traditionally, rendering at 600p/60-fps on Xbox 360, and 900p/60-fps on Xbox One.

  • Dynamic Resolution/60-fps: This is a newer, more advanced rendering technique, where the engine will scale the resolution based on the complexity and demands of a scene. During complex, demanding scenes where a lot is going on, the engine will scale down to 720p or even lower to maintain the 60-fps frame rate, then scale back up as quickly as possible. The advantage here is the player is less likely to notice the resolution changing during frantic moments of gameplay, and keeping the frame rate up prevents the game from ever feeling sluggish. Then, in smaller or less demanding scenes, the engine can scale back up to a true 1080p/60-fps, preserving image quality. Games that employ dynamic resolution include Halo 5, the new Doom, and Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Enter Scorpio

What does this mean on Scorpio? According to what Spencer has said in the press:

  • Xbox One games that employ a dynamic resolution will see improved performance since the extra horsepower will allow the game to stay at 1080p/60-fps more consistently, if not all the time.

  • Games that employ a fixed, locked output (like 1080p/30-fps) will not see a performance increase, and will not magically start outputting at 60-fps because they were never coded to do so. Unless the developer goes back and unlocks the frame rate (which I doubt most will want to spend the time and money to do, especially if the game's physics are tied to its frame rate), these games will run exactly the same on Scorpio as they do on Xbox One.

  • The one grey area, where Spencer has not clarified, are the games like Titanfall and Battlefield 4, where they employ a 720p-ish resolution but an unlocked frame rate. During frantic firefights, both Titanfall and BF4 will see their frame rate drop from 60-fps down to 40-fps and below, leading to a stuttering, sluggish sensation and/or screen tearing. While it's clear they'll continue to output at their fixed resolution on Scorpio, it's not clear if Scorpio's added horsepower will help them stay a 60-fps more consistently. Similarly, Rise of the Tomb Raider aims for a 30-fps presentation, but sees drops into the low-20s in complex scenes; it's not clear if Scorpio will help it hold that 30-fps line. Given the nature of Microsoft's push towards this Universal Windows Platform (UWP) and the fact that both Scorpio and the Xbox One will run the same operating system and user interface, it theoretically makes sense that it would. However, without further information, it's too early to say for certain.

Universal Windows Platform

The main thing to take away from all this is Microsoft's new UWP umbrella. Traditionally, console and PC architectures have been very different. With Windows 10 and Xbox One, Microsoft is effectively merging them together, with the long-term goal of allowing PC, Scorpio, and Xbox One to all run the same software on the same operating system. The software then, in theory, scales to the performance of the hardware and the consumer's budget, with PC having the most eye-candy and highest cost, Scorpio serving as a mid-range option, and Xbox One likely dropping in price and acting as the entry-level member of the greater Xbox Gaming brand. Think of it like a BMW M3 (PC), a 335i (Scorpio), and a 328i (Xbox One): All three are members of the 3 Series, but offer different performance based on price.

Is there any BF1 gameplay from the Xbox One?

I'm curious to see how watered down the graphics will be compared to the PC gameplay we saw at E3.

BF4 on Xb1 can look pretty ugly at times, especially on big maps. 720p res doesn't help either. Knowing BF1 runs on the same engine as Battlefront gives me hope, though.

[HELP] Step by Step Instructions for Navigating to Resolution Settings

Sorry for the trash post but I've moved from a 1080p monitor to a 720p one and upon plugging my Xbox One in I get the message "Out of Range"; indicating the resolution is unsupported.

I've tried the trick of holding the Xbox button and eject in order to start up in resolution mode and this has not solved the problem either. I'm 99% certain that the resolution is the problem as I had the same problem a while ago with the same TV and solved it by changing the resolution of the Xbox on a different TV which I currently don't have access to.

I can still receive audio, just no video. Ive also tried narrator mode but I can't get this to turn on for some reason.

If anyone feels helpful and willing, could you please give me direct inputs for navigating to the resolution settings of the device so that I can pick through them and get a supported resolution?

Thank you very much in advance :)

[Tech] Xbox ONE on a HD720 Ready TV (1366x768)

I've had a look at the supported xbox one resolutions, and it seems to only support 1080p and 720p panels.

I've got a HD Ready tv meaning that it is advertised as 720p but is really 768p (1366x768)

Would this mean that the image would appear stretched? Would any hd ready tv users clarify for me if this is the case?

My 360 natively supports the 768p resolution of my tv and looks just fine.

[DISCUSSION] i do not believe the lies of the unified eco-system. i dont believe xbox one and scorpio will always share games and we can all hold hands and catch butterflies together.

the big thing about E3 was cross play, and buy here and also play it here! shtick. people are upset about a new xbox coming out, and xbox assured us that our games will be playable on the new scorpio, OR the xbox one! yay. glitter time!!!!

what happens with every generation? none of them get cut off. the last generation still works. still gets the games. and the new generation suffers for a few years while we have to baby the last generation. finally after a few years, people seem to be done buying half-baked games on the 360 and realize they are missing a lot of content on the xbox one based games; essentially xbox 360+xbox one games became stripped once developers got their grip on the x1 hardware.

if anyone honestly thinks they are going to keep scorpio games dumbed down to play on the x1 forever, they are dreaming.

watching the after show interview with shannon, she already hinted at this. her facial expressions showed more, but unfortunately i cannot find the sit down interview with that annoying youtube dude. but all i have is a few quotes from another interview that said pretty much the same thing as this e3 interview (possibly taken from the e3 interview)

"Some developers may choose to implement the very high-end 4K--and I really hope that they do," Loftis said. "But all the games being made right now will run on Scorpio. We're promising forward and backward compatibility. It's hardware innovation without compromising compatibility.

Pressed further on whether or not there might be Scorpio-only games, Loftis said, "I don't know about that. It's up to the game development community; what do they want to do.

two points are key here. this is the good ol' "its 19.99, not TWENTY DOLLARS!!" shit. "all games being made RIGHT NOW will run on scorpio" very good wording right there. makes it sound like the old systems wont be trashed, but smarter people will see in between lines, and realize thats exactly what she's saying.

"i dont know about that. its up to the game development community. thats their choice" this pretty much puts it in the coffin. do i think a lot of x1 games will work on scorpio? hell yeah. but at some point, theres a cut off. apparently from scorpio developer cameos at E3, they are cumming in their tight urban outfitter jeans at the thought of MOAR POWA!!!! i just dont see how they are coming up with a scorpio product with 6 terafloppyflops and they will dumb it down so xbox one 1flippityflop can play it.

what are your thoughts and take on this? i know nothing about development or optimization. i could be completely wrong. it'd be great if i am. but i thought this could be an interesting discussion, and a brake from the "LOL GUYZ. I HAVE A 720P TV, SHOULD I BUY THE X1S??!" crap.

My Full Glyph Review

Introduction

It wouldn't be an authentic opinion if it didn't feature a lot of criticism. That being said, I wanted to get out of the way, from the get go, that after extensive use I'm still in love with the Glyph. It's a fantastic first gen product, the technology it titllatingly cool, and while still being a first gen product, I have found several use cases for it already that I'm extremely happy about.

Simultaneously, it's a new thing! So there are some pitfalls and areas of opportunity for Avegant to improve on for the next edition. The edition that was shipped has been dubbed the "Founders Edition", and there's already word of a new edition in the works. Many of what I'll say here has been echoed by other users on the Avegant forums. Some of it is my own, unique critique. But I want to assure you that all of it is positive.

The Glyph Overview

The Glyph is most accurately described as a head-mounted display. Is it VR? No. Definitely not. It is simply a display, with unique properties, that make it highly portable, and due to its head-mountability, it is fairly (but not completely) immersive.

The spokespeople from Avegant were being very honest when they said that watching content in the Glyph is much like a movie theatre about two thirds of the way back in the rows. In fact, I went to the theatre the day after spending five hours on the Glyph, and that description is very spot-on. When you sit in a movie theatre, you generally look at the screen and it fills most of your view. Of course, out of your peripherals you'll see the edges of the screen, as well as the rows in front of you. And of course, if you actually cast your eyes about the theatre you can see the aisle, the walls, the roof, etc. As well, when sitting in a theatre watching a movie on the big screen, you may have to actually look at the corner of the screen when something happens there; you can't just stare at the middle and capture it all.

The Glyph wears exactly like that. Looking at its "display" (can't say screen, cause there isn't one) you can cast your eyes about as see black space around the display. Just like viewing the walls, roof and seating areas in the theatre. Because of this, when you look about inside the Glyph, you do see that the whole thing is small. Extremely small, even. Since, the display's real size is about the size of your iris. However, if you simply focus on the content, it fills your vision.

What still fascinates me about the Glyph, even after hours and hours of use, is how much detail can be seen. If someone made a Super OLED screen, with even the highest of pixel density, that was the size of your iris, it wouldn't matter how close it was to your eye, you wouldn't be able to see squat. Let alone details like leaves on trees and sweat on an actor's brow. However, with the Glyph you can. You see all the details, and thanks to the brightness setting, perhaps to a fault (more on that later). It is a small screen, but it has all the clarity and visual scope as a movie theatre. It is certainly a better experience than watching a movie on, say, your laptop. It probably comparable (with a slight edge) to watching a movie in a high-end home theatre setup (with the lights all off in the room), but is best compared to a movie theatre.

The Glyph sports two types of audio input. Ye ol' standard 35mm jack, which allows the Glyph to be used as basic headphones without using any battery; that is, just like ear buds or other over-the-ear headphones, you can listen to infinite music without needing to charge the Glyph. Plug in the HDMI and you can listen to music just the same, however, the "display" will be on and running, even thought you're not using it. This consumes battery.

Speaking of battery, in my experience it is enough for two movies of 2 hours or less each. I watched a single two hour movie, as well as a 1hr 45min film, and it had about 10% battery left.

Is movies all it does? Nope! In fact, one of the Glyph's main strengths is that it is extremely versatile. With the right combinations of cables and adapters you can connect it to anything. I've plugged it into my Xbox, a Surface Pro 2 via a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, my phone via MHL (Slimport) adapter, a buddy's OnePlus phone, an Apple iPad, a desktop computer, my work computer via a VGA to HDMI adapter, my Telus PVR, a Chromecast dongle and a Miracast dongle device. I have encountered zero issues getting it to display content on any device so far. Which, when you compare it to other head mounted display options (or, even more so, any VR) it really does stand out as a fantastic feature. Other Glyph owners I have spoken to use it connected to a variety of drone controllers and displays as well. A few people have hooked them up to Raspberry Pi Zero's. The long and short of it is that you can connect it to anything that uses HDMI.

I've mentioned several times now how it doesn't have a screen. Without boring you about the details, the way it works is, through a complex and proprietary arrangement of DLP projectors and mirrors, an image is projected into your retina. It feels a little less like looking at an image, and more like just seeing the image. However, since that image exists in a rectangle, unless you've hit the "sweet spot", your mind will likely interpret the image as something you're looking at.

That probably sounds like gibberish. So, let me try it another way. When you look at something, your eyes have to focus on it. The object is a certain distance away and you're focused on it based on that distance. This is why, after staring at a computer screen for an extended period of time, it can sometimes take a while for your eyes to get used to adjusting it's focus; like muscles needing to warm up again. With the Glyph, however, though the mirror array sits only millimeters away from your iris, you're not focusing on it. If you held something up to your eyes, only millimeters away, you probably couldn't focus on it if you want to. With the Glyph, you don't have to. The image is being projected into your eye, pre-focused thanks to the diopter and prescription adjusters. The result is, your eyes don't fatigue.

It also means that getting the settings right for your vision is incredibly crucial, which brings me to the next section.

Finding the Right Fit and Comfort Issues

Your entire experience with the Glyph hinges on learning how to adjust it to fit your vision. For this reason, I hesitate showing the Glyph to people who don't have more than fifteen minutes available to use it. Since, if they don't have the time to adjust properly, they'll put it on for a few moments, declare the image not that clear, and take it off. Once you learn how to adjust it, it only takes a few moments. But initially, it seems extremely finicky.

If any of you want to try it in the future, I won't let you unless you promise at least 15min. Preferably a whole movie. Since, that's about how much time it takes to get used to the experience. It is a very unique viewing experience, and one that I believe very rewarding when you give it the necessary time.

The first comfort issue I've encountered, and the only truly lingering comfort issue, is that my Campbell ears are perhaps too large to comfortably fit inside the ear cans. I have experienced this with every sort of over the ear headphones, including my Wireless Beats and my >$200 studio headphones that connect to my digital piano. After about forty min, my ears hurt. With the Glyph, however, it is more like 25 minutes. Much of the Glyph's ergonomics requires the device to really squeeze your head to support the weight of the device, and as a result it can seen crushing at times. Sometimes I'll watch a movie and feel fine the whole way through. And other times I'll find myself taking it off several times in a movie just to give the sides of my head a break.

Many users have reported comfort issues to do with their nose. Considerable weight it placed on the bridge of your nose, holding up the device. As a result, Avegant has provided four interchangeable nose pieces, as well as a removable head strap, all supposed to alleviate this concern. I, however, have experienced zero issues with nose comfort. I don't even bother using the interchangeable nose pieces unless I'm lying down, flat on my back, in which case the rubberized nose piece prevents the Glyph from getting right up into my eyes. I put on the head strap once to test it out. Didn't see any value in it, and don't even carry it around in my case anymore.

The only other instance of discomfort I've experienced is, initially, I was getting the lenses so close to my eyes that my eye lashes would brush up on them. This was partly to compensate for not having the diopter adjustment right, as getting closer to the lenses brighten the image considerably if you haven't got the diopter set right. This wasn't a big deal, comfort-wise, but it did create smudges on the lenses which would obscure the picture. Lesson learned? Don't exaggerate how close it needs to be to your eyes. If the lenses are level with your iris, and the diopter set correctly then the image will look just fine.

The Image

Biggest question I'm asked is "how does it look?". The short answer is "a lot like my HD TV." The longer answer is as follows.

The visual experience is most closely related to an LCD screen with a slightly low contrast. That means that blacks are more like greys, and in really dark scenes you can still see a fair amount within that grey. On Alien Isolation (which relies heavily on dark scenery), I had to crank the gamma down to the second lowest setting to get the "visible/barely visible" logo to appear as such. For a lot of people, they'd hate that. LCD screens have fallen out of favour, being replaced by AMOLED screens which produce truer blacks. However, I've been an LCD fan since it produces more vibrant colours (and, on cellphones in particular, handles reflective light/exterior light much better). Since my LG TV is LCD, they're very comparable.

In terms of sharpness, or dpi, the Glyph supports 720p inputs. That means, if whatever you're plugged into is set to 1080p it'll show you an error. Now, interestingly, the content can be whatever. For example, I stream to a Miracast device which outputs 720p. But, I can torrent a 1080p film and stream that to the Miracast, and it will display just fine. It seems like it's more a software impediment than a hardware one, which makes sense because there are no pixels on the Glyph. There's no screen, and what is there is neither LCD nor OLED. Th real issue with that is that most bluray players force 1080p, an thus the Glyph won't jive with them. So, unless your bluray is configurable (for example, the Xbox One's is) then the Glyph might not work for you.

Does that mean it looks 720p? Not really. I dunno if it looks 1080p, but it doesn't look 720p. Its actual output probably lies somewhere between the two. Sadly, I feel like I haven't fully tested this yet, since, all the movies I've watched have been torrents. So, they're of dubious quality to begin with, and there are always artifacts of  compression (especially in low lighting scenes, where torrents often produce black "blooms"). That being said, I have connected it to my Telus set top box and watched an HD On Demand video: it looked great. I've also run some Vimeo "4K" video that also looked great. So, I can't say there's any issues with the HDness of the display. The highest res download I did was a 6gb 1080p download of the Fellowship of the Ring. Looked fantastic.

3D, is another story. When the Glyph first shipped to me it supported SBS 3D. SBS 3D videos are hard to come by (though, Pornhub seems to have a good collection...), and it comes with some serious limitations. At 720p, SBS essentially halves that, with 360p in one eye, and 360p in the other, supposedly combining to make the 720p 3D image. In reality it just looks like a 360p 3D image and it kinda sucks. What's cool about this, is that this 3D is the most natural looking I've ever experienced. 3D in theatre sucks balls, IMO. Wearing sunglasses that produce the effect, which destroys the colour vibrancy over top of my glasses, and the image never quite looking right, and pans being jittery and distorted... the whole thing rubs me the wrong way. With the Glyph, however, none of that is a factor. In fact, the 3D looks so natural (besides the low res) that you almost immediately forget that it is there. Which ultimately destroys the purpose of 3D. It is certainly present on the Glyph, but it offers zero wow factor.

All that being said, last week's firmware update added frame packed 3D, which I haven't tried yet, and which should resolve resolution issues. I'm just not a 3D buff, so testing out frame packed hasn't been high on my list of priorities.

The Sound

As mentioned above, the Glyph has two audio interactions. One, HDMI, and two, 33mm. When connected with the 33mm it is basically identical to my Beats headphones. When the HDMI is active, however, I hear a constant, digital hum when there's no audio coming. When there is audio, is definitely high quality, and for people who like a little rumble, it does have more than average rumble.

The stereo qualities of the audio sound really good when gaming. In Alien Isolation, there is spatial awareness provided by the audio, as, when characters (or aliens) make sound to the left or right side of the character, it matches the ear cans, and fades gracefully between them as you turn your character. What it doesn't do, is produce a top/bottom audio experience. So, I couldn't honestly call it "surround sound", but because the cans ensure that all you hear is the game, and because there is limited spatial audio awareness, it does a darn good job of being immersive as far as audio goes.

The Physical Device

The build quality of the device itself is deceptively good. Deceptive, because it looks fantastic, and feels fantastic, and appears sturdy. But I've noticed some weak points that have the potential to develop into real problems. It seems that the arms of the headband aren't that flexible. They do indeed flex as you take it on or off, but it causes a seam between two "chunks" of the band to buckle. It doesn't cause any damage, however, I believe it is the root cause of the "dust" issue that has been reported.

For those unfamiliar with the dust issue, there are a significant amount of people who have reported dust particles getting into the optic chamber and onto the lenses. For some, and depending on the size/quantity of dust, this becomes an unbearable distraction.

I too, have noticed one speck of dust that I can't see unless I go looking for it, an unless I strain my eyes to focus on it. But I an confident it wasn't there when the Glyph was shipped to me, since, I was aware of the dust issue and inspected it immaculately. I see no way dust could get into the innards of the device, except through the small crack that's created when the arm seam buckles.

Other than that, it's a very solidly developed device.

The Closing Remarks

I'm sure there is a lot more to say, but my brain is fried from writing all this. So, instead I'll give a tl;dr. I'll also note that as a portable video viewing device it is unparalleled. I'll never watch another movie on a plane or in a car on a phone or tablet. There's no reason to. And when the lady wants you in bed, but you wanna watch a movie, this is the perfect solution. Watching a movie while in sleeping position and in your comfortable bed is a fantastic experience.

Please! Fire me questions. I'm more that willing to answer any that I can.

TL;DR Awesome shit. Excited for future models to perfect the small imperfections and expand capabilities. But for what it is, I got exactly what I wanted.

M4V higher network requirements?

Hey all,

Technical question and I wasn't sure where else to ask, so if there is a place I'd be better off asking then please suggest it.

Short question is: Does the M4V container have unusually high streaming requirements?

Recently I have upgraded my trusty old WDTV Live Streaming to a Shield TV, and my isp provided router to an Asus A68U. Initially everything was rock solid, and I had zero complaints. It was nice getting back to Kodi, as I hadn't had it since XBMC on the Xbox, and XBMP before it!

Anyway, the old setup had the WDTV connected to my laptop via ethernet. No complaints for playing (supported) videos, everything was quite smooth.

For various reasons I have opted to go wifi only with this new setup, and everything seemed great. I was blown away by what a difference the Asus made, and was happy to have everything working great. I tested with my most largest of movie files and everything loaded quickly and seeked like a pro.

Then I started playing some old episodes (720p web rips in m4v containers) and they would quickly lose sync and go into buffering hell. After much testing I deemed it to be the fault of the inbuilt wireless of my laptop, and connected that to an external wireless adaptor.

Well, it appears that while that may have contributed to the issue, there was more to it.

Tonight I was playing an 11gig 1080p bluray rip on my ipad with infuse. I saw the Google cast button pop up and gave it a whirl. After a warning that I may experience choppy playback I was startled to find that it played incredibly smoothly through my Shield. (Laptop wirelessly to router, wirelessly to ipad, wirelessly to router, wirelessly to shield). Then I tried loading one of those m4v files, after waiting a while gave up and force closed Infuse, and on a whim remuxed it to mkv with MKVToolNix. As I expected it should have to begin with, it worked like a champ.

What is going on?

Thanks

There will be a WiiU situation with the new Xbox one S and Ps4 Neo

Firstly they should have just gone ahead and called it a new console instead of just saying its a new model of the current console, the hardware is upgraded on both so eventually games that are made to use that hardware won't function properly on the original version, so yes I count this as a new console generation. Ya see I'm all for newer consoles but the names of the Xbox one Scorpio and Ps4 Neo will just confuse people that don't understand into thinking it just a newer version of the old console which is exactly what happened to the WiiU. People just thought the WiiU was just a new version of the wii and didn't buy it, there may be a similar situation with Xbox one S and Ps4 Neo since the casual consumer may go and think "I already have an Xbox One/ Ps4 I dont need another" this wouldn't happen if they had just gone ahead and called it Xbox 720 or Ps5 since then it would be clear that it is an entirely new console.

This is just my early opinion on the matter based on what happened in the past but I could be very wrong and I hope that I am

I really hope BF1 doesn't run at 720p on XB1 especially since Xbox has the marketing rights. They need to get it to 900p like ps4

Improving quality?

Hi guys,
I was wondering if there is anything I can do/upgrade to get better streaming/recording quality for my viewers?
This is my current PC Spec
I'm using OBS and the settings are
2000 max bitrate
Streaming with a custom base resolution of 1280x720 (monitors are 1920x1080)
FPS of 30

And everything else is default I think? I was wondering if it would be possible to stream 1080p 30fps or at least 720p 60 fps. My computer is not OC'd, is that something I should do?

Thanks for any insight.

Edit: I mainly stream CSGO and FIFA, but do play Halo and some Xbox one games every once in a while/

(First Build) Finishing a build, $800 budget, need advice and help to make sure I get the biggest bang for my buck.

Build Help/Ready: Build Help

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, entertainment, and medium-heavy multi-tasking.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)

Looking for mainly 1080p at 60 fps for most games. High end games like Witcher 3/Crysis/Spec-Ops I'm fine with 720p and at least 30 fps.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

No more than 800. That includes a monitor I might have to buy and a slim keyboard (not a fan of mechanical).

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Total
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.) $607.92

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I already have a 1 TB harddrive from an old Lenovo Y510p laptop I'll use. I want to eventually get an SSD. I may need to incorporate a monitor as I'm not sure the TV I have at home works. My plan is to use the TV I use for my xbox One (Halo 5, Witcher 3, etc) and use it as a monitor. I'm not sure if it is 1080p though.

Also, is it possible to get a cheaper Power Supply that will hold my build? The wattage is estimated at 315W.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.
