I personally believe that NX will probably be split into three separate systems-- Let's call them Nintendo Play, Nintendo Pro, and Nintendo Go (unless Sony still owns that from their PSP Go). The first two would be released in March 2017, while Go would be released in November 2017. The differences between the three would exist to cover different segments of the market Nintendo traditionally appeals to. Nintendo Play and Pro would both cover the home console market, while Go would succeed the 3DS. The differences in the names are done to establish the platform simply as "Nintendo" and its games, which also makes it clear that this is a platform Nintendo is going forward with in the future. N"X", where X is Play, Pro, and Go, or whatever other forms Nintendo decides to develop this platform for. There's No Play Like It.
Nintendo Play would be something of a Vita TV for Go, with Go really only being an underclocked portable version of Play. Play would use something based on Tegra X1 and have performance that is closer to an Xbox One but still noticeably below it, while Go would be similar in power to Play but closer to the Wii U (but still slightly above it). Both of these systems will only use cartridges for their media format (in addition to digital downloads of course), and will focus on software that is not as technically demanding to run.
Go titles would essentially be Wii U level, whereas Play titles would be the same as Go titles but with slightly better performance and some minor exclusive features that make sense when it comes to the move to a living room environment. For example, Smash Bros. on Play (and Pro) would feature 8 player Smash whereas Go can only go up to 4 players. Both are in essence a slightly improved Wii U that’s more of a lateral move in order for Nintendo to provide a cheap (in the case of Play) and accessible way for people to play their first party content. If you know of Motorola’s old smartphone lineup, this would essentially be their Moto G, whereas their Moto X would be the Pro.
Pro would be slightly more powerful than PS4, will be capable of running XBO/PS4 versions of AAA games, and will be able to accept discs in addition to the aforementioned cartridges. Nintendo would ensure that all of their first party software is capable of running on all three systems, making use of cartridges exclusively (due to Nintendo’s history of their games being rather compact in terms of size), while it is up to developers to determine whether or not they will make use of the significant power boost Pro provides relative to the other two systems (and whether or not they will release software on disc or cartridge).
If a developer decides to make a game for Play, it must also run on Go and Pro with no problems. A game using the power boost of Pro will not have to run on the other two systems and would thus be exclusive to Pro. The Wii U is discontinued immediately due to the Play essentially taking its place as Nintendo's entry-level system (as opposed to their old system being reduced in price in a weird form like the Wii was). Go would be around the size of a closed 3DS XL, feature the same controls as Play/Pro. Only one 4.7" 720p capacitive touch screen, no dual screen setup or 3D.
Nintendo Play would debut for something in the ballpark of $150-$200, while Pro would be released for $300-330. Go's release is in late October/early November largely so that the price can be right and to also work as a sort of soft relaunch of the NX platform for the holiday season. A solid lineup of titles (complete with old ass ports like the Wii U got) secured for Play/Pro launch would be:
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Play/Pro/Go)
- Super Smash Bros. (Play/Pro/Go)
- FIFA 17 (Play/Pro/Go)
- Overwatch (Play/Pro/Go)
- Rocket League (Play/Pro/Go)
- Skylanders Imaginators (Play/Pro/Go)
- Just Dance 2017 (Play/Pro/Go) (Not sure how that would work on Go...)
- Unknown Ubisoft Game (Play/Pro/Go)
- For Honor (Pro)
- Mass Effect: Andromeda (Pro)
- Final Fantasy XV (Pro)
- Tekken 7 (Pro)
Super Smash Bros. drops the "for ___" subtitle and simply becomes "Super Smash Bros.". It will come bundled with the system in an odd, rather neutered form with only the original 8 characters and a limited stage selection, but with full access to multiplayer modes, including online play, where one is able to play with people who own the full game. Characters can be bought individually at a cost that eventually adds up to $10 more than buying the game outright would, while amiibo for compatible characters can also be scanned in so you can own that character. A normal, retail release for $60 will also be available. The game would launch with Ice Climbers to differentiate itself from the Wii U/3DS versions of the game. These moves are made in part as Nintendo's plan to allow everyone who purchases an NX to have some exposure to several of their IPs right out of the box, while also establishing Smash Bros. as a sort of service (optional if you just buy the normal $60 game) due to its history of being a game with legs. Upcoming games can be promoted within Smash Bros. by having a character or stage released for free for a month before the game's release. Owners of the Wii U version are able to receive a digital copy of the full game for free.
Release schedule for the first year following its March launch will most likely be good due to Nintendo making games that will run on both their console and handheld for the first time. There's no need to make two separate versions of Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, etc. You can focus more people on working on bigger projects like Breath of the Wild that add to the reasons to buy the console rather than scavenging up people to make smaller filler titles like Tri Force Heroes or Amiibo Festival. Additionally, you have Wii U games that were essentially just held off and worked on a bit further so they could be ported to Play/Go and "remastered" for Pro.
- April - Pikmin 4
- May - Animal Crossing
- July - Retro's game (featured in Smash Bros in some way)
- September - Fire Emblem
- October - Splatoon sequel (Inkling in Smash Bros with a Splatoon stage)
- November - Mario Kart
- February 2018 or November 2018 - Super Mario game
Minecraft released sometime in June or not very several years (due to Microsoft not wanting to promote NX's launch or holiday season), while most PS4/XBO versions of AAA third party games for the next couple of years come to Pro (not the Neo/Scorpio versions).
I'm guessing that Retro's title got moved from Wii U to NX, and I'm sure that a similar port and "remaster" process probably occurred with Pikmin and Animal Crossing. I'm also guessing that Splatoon was originally destined for a port, but ultimately it was decided to develop a full fledged sequel to launch concurrently with Go to provide a suitable launch game for it in Japan where portables and Splatoon are more popular. In addition to the "new type of" Super Mario at E3, there might be some teaser of Metroid NX to prove that Nintendo is still committed to the series. Maybe a reveal for some small scale Game Freak game (like HarmoKnight or that Elephant game). I wouldn't be surprised if they adapt Kirby into 3D World type gameplay either. I could also see Nintendo possibly pulling a Sony style Street Fighter V but with Monster Hunter to finally pull it onto modern hardware since Capcom seems so reluctant to move past PSP visuals and also to reaffirm its place on a handheld system. Expecting a Yokai something too.
What do you guys think? Could you see Nintendo release even more devices, or just two? I think the difference between Play and Pro would essentially be like what Sony/Microsoft are doing right now with their .5 generation upgrades, but done to appeal to the market that Nintendo has usually gone after and cheaply so that they can get it out to as many people as possible (seeing as they seem to be trying to get their name out there again after the post Wii collapse). Would they continue to stick with a separation between handhelds and consoles? I don't see it as being likely but maybe someone can provide a good enough reason to suggest otherwise.
