I bought Final Fantasy XIII on Steam, are there any 'tips' to actually play it? Or should I just refund it...

I've been dying to replay Final Fantasy XIII for a while now. When I saw it was on sale on Steam, I pulled the trigger. The reviews were mostly positive and I heard there was a patch that enabled some resolution settings. However, it doesn't seem like it's going to run well for me.

On my first boot up, it crashed. I tried to run it in 1080p Fullscreen, 1024 x 1024 Shadow Res, and x4 AA. Then I dropped it down to 720p and it runs, but the opening cutscene stutters like crazy! I tried to start a new game and that cutscene also stutters like crazy. I haven't actually got to the game itself yet because of the stutters. I found a 'tip' on how to reduce the stutter, by selecting Adaptive V-Sync in the 3D settings but that didn't change anything.

I have a pretty good rig so I'm shocked that it isn't running well. Is it even worth trying to play on PC? It seems like this port is horrible. I'd love to play XIII again but man...I don't know what to do.

This is how it appears for me

EDIT 2:

Plugging in an Xbox One controller via USB solved all stuttering. Weird.
