Need a device for playing media to my TV and don't know which device is what I need.

I'm thinking about selling my Xbox One because I never play games on it. However, I do use it all the time for watching Netflix, Amazon Instant, YouTube, and casting movies from my PC over the same network. But the Xbox is a rather expensive device for these functions. I've looked into several devices, but I don't know if any can do everything I need. I'd also like to stream games from my PC to my TV if possible, but not if it lacks any of the previous requirements.

I first looked into the Chromecast as it's price-point is the most appealing to me. It appears it can handle Netflix/Amazon/YT well, but I read it can only display casted videos at 720p at most (forgot the source). I'd really prefer 1080p though. If anyone can clarify Chromecast better, I'd appreciate it.

I've also looked into Amazon fire, Roku, Nvidia Shield Android TV, and Steam Link (when it releases). All of these devices, except Steam Link, seem like they definitely support Netflix/YT, I'm just not sure about the ability to play streamed media from my PC.

Again, any clarification would be much appreciated!

For which platform should I buy Battlefront?

Hi, I'm having an uncertainty at buying Battlefront for either PS4 or Xbox One. I have both Xbox One and PS4, but spending much more time with One since I bought it in summer, and also loving it more.

However, this resolution thing is busying my mind. I played the beta on PS4, and it was great. Don't know the One version though, 'cause I didn't bother the download it, only know it from comparison videos and I found almost no difference. They say PS4 version looks better but when I look into screenshoots or videos, it's barely noticeable. I mean who will notice the damn draw distance in the middle of an action for me, but does it noticeable really?

What makes me buy it for One is my PS Plus is expiring in January 2016 and I'm not thinking of a renew, so I will have to spend extra 50 bucks for just Battlefront. (Since I literally retired from BF4, I have no other multiplayer game to play on PS4. All I play is on One.) I could spend that same money for Season Pass on XO later though. Another reason is that I'm an EA Access member, so it will be 54$ on One for me compared to the 60$ price on PS4. Also I love Xbox One controller so much especially on FPS games, those vibrated LT-RT makes the whole game much better. Finally, if I'm going to buy it for PS4, I will have to charge the damn DS4 for 4 or 5 times in a week, while I forgot when I put the current batteries to the Xbox One controller, which lasts for at least 10-15 days for me.

So, against all these pluses for Xbox One, should I all erase these for a difference of 900p to 720p? I think I shouldn't even think about it and buy it for One but want to ask it.

Thanks.

Week 22 Strategy - Updated Daily

Overview

We have moved up to 2nd and have 570CC to spend!

We have had a fantastic week. The big news is that we pushed ALD in to turmoil. First thing to say is to acknowledge the effort ALD put in to fortification. They managed to fortify all of their control systems with two days to go, yes they are able to have those nice low fortification triggers but this is still a hugely impressive feat.

But all that effort was not good enough because the Federation were able to undermine a massive amount of their control systems (I think it was 62 systems), even given the high triggers, and push them in to turmoil!

Winters, as always punching well above their weight also took the brunt of the undermining last cycle. We owe them our gratitude. And Taco Corp, for the XBox world, have continued to show themselves as a phenomenally impressive force, we are very lucky to have them with us.

I think this will be one of the defining cycles of Powerplay. Well done everyone involved.

We got all of our expansions, some good some not so good but importantly we now have 71 control systems. This is good news for us.

Priorities this week

  1. Preparation - We need to get these in order early on
  2. Fortification - Lets all try to help out here. The sooner the better
  3. Make some money - Sort out your finances (this may come higher for some)
  4. Undermining - Not a massive week for this
  5. Expansion - The Hudson-Hoardtm usually deal with this for us.

For the Federation! o7

Game Capture issue or PC too slow?

I just got a Elgato Game Capture HD60, I have a pc with: AMD FX-8120 (cores unlocked) Nvidia GTX 560 2GB (OC) (I know, time to upgrade this) 16 gb 1600 ddr3 Corsair Vengeance 1 tb western digital black, and a smaller 500gb hdd.

The software (Game Capture) is saying my pc is too slow to broadcast at 720p 60, and at 720p 30, despite the fact I'm feeding it my Xbox One (Destiny). Is my processor really too slow? What are my options?

[TECH SUPPORT] I love Bethesda enough that I'm fine with paying for Fallout 4 twice. I am PC for these games all the way, BUT...

Since 1996 I've had a history of building a new gaming PC just for each major TES - and then Fallout - release. The time has obviously come, but I'm not going to have my new gaming PC until January and my old/current rig was gifted to someone in need.

Now, I own an Xbox One for Killer Instinct. I also still have a laptop with the following specs:

Nvidia 850m 2gb (GDDR3 version) Core i7 4700HQ 8gb ram.

As a given, I will be purchasing Fallout 4 on my new PC once it is assembled. However, as a fanatically enthused fan, I will need to play Fallout on day one to avoid spontaneous heart failure.

Should I buy for Xbox One or my laptop? Which do you think would give a better (temporary) experience?

On the one hand, since I am going to buy for PC anyway, playing on my laptop will save some money. HOWEVER, according to minimum system requirements, my laptop's GPU is going to really struggle. I would like my first few months of FO (I play these games to death throughout all the years between their installments due to the mods) to be as ideal as possible.

So which will do better, do you think? My laptop or the X1?

I know Xbox One will be 30fps, which is terrible, but I don't think my laptop will get past that anyway except on Low quality and 720p...

Brothers, I have truly ascended

After years, nay, decades not comprehending the true superiority of what is known as the Personal Computer, I have finally seen the light of the heavens. Two years ago I purchased a "next generation console" called the Xbox One. It appeased me and made me think that 720p @ 30fps was "next generation" gaming. Then I was foolish and got a PS4 thinking "why not have the best?" A Nintendo Wii U soon followed and my appetite was whetted. For a while.

It was then I decided to delve back into my past hobby of building personal computers. I am always a go big or go home person, so I picked up a 4790k, H110i gtx, 16gb corsair vengence and a gtx 780.

This was not enough.

Shortly after I purchased the 780, the 980 was released. I swiftly sold my old card and picked up the 980.

All was well but...

I still preferred my Xbox.

But NOW brothers! NOW I have news from the Gods!

I purchased a SECOND 980 and have since used SLI technology to get a MINIMUM of 60fps in 3840x2160 in nearly any game I throw at it. In today's Steam sale I purchased $250 worth of my favorite games, new and old, so that I may witness them in such glory.

My point is brethren, if you are like I was and have not truly ascended yet, the SLI 980 and higher is true heaven on earth. Never have I seen a frame drop nor jitters. You might say it is like... butter.

May your frame rates be high and your temperatures below.

Why won't my 60fps videos upload in 60fps?

I have tried a number of different options based on research I have done, but nothing I do seems to work. Let me explain.

I record gameplay from Xbox One using an Elgato HD60 Pro capture card and OBS. In OBS, my I set my capture to 1920x1080, 60fps, and 12000k bit rate. I then load the footage into Windows Movie Maker to do some editing. Once I'm done editing, I export the video as an MP4 with the custom settings of 1920x1080, 60fps, and 12000k bit rate as well.

When I upload the videos to YouTube, it initially only shows up in 360p while the higher resolutions process. After all is said and done though, the videos only go up to 1080p in 30fps. No 720P 60fps or 1080p 60fps.

I have tried a number of solutions, including messing around with the bit rate and removing intros from my videos (which were rendered in 60fps anyway so that really shouldn't matter) but nothing has worked so far.

Does anyone know why I can't upload in 60fps?

Thanks in advance

Trying out Streaming. I've done a lot of testing to get the best audio/video I can. I have some questions.

My setup: - Using OBS, Hauppague HDPVR 2, 720p Webcam

I have the PVR going into my PC, and using the Happague Capture program. OBS is selected to stream the preview off of Hauppague Captures screen via a sub region. I did try using the built in Twitch App on the X1, but didn't think the video was as good. I do have my PC and X1 wired to my network, which gets 50-80mbps down AND up. That should be more than enough.

I started without any downscaling, but I read that unless your partnered with Twitch, you can't do 1080p. I downscaled to 720p. Here is the result. I'm still working on a way to get better audio than to drag my desktop headset over to my couch. Should I be downscaling? IF so, what filter will give me the best looking picture? I tried 16 and 32, and really couldn't tell the difference.

Am I using the twitch app wrong? I used the Knect camera, but honestly, thought it looked like crap compared to my cheap 720p webcam. Should I use Windows 10 to play XBox and stream from there? I only have 1 monitor though, is this possible? Will the picture not be clear enough? I had the Hauppague for likely 2+ years now. I did do some youtubing back in the day, but stopped because life just got to be to much. I want to start back up because I had fun doing it, and interacting with "fans." I want to eventually get those great Twitch Alerts when someone subs, but don't think I can do so while only using the Twitch App on the X1. Its why i'm trying to do this via PVR.

I guess ultimatly what i'm asking, is knowing my equipment and options, what is the best way to get the best looking picture I can.

Why do 1080p settings look better than 720p settings on my 720p TV?

I own a 24 inch 720p TV at the moment, but when I change the settings on my Xbox to 720p it looks very blurry and crappy, while it looks about perfect when it's on 1080p. Why is this?

Capture card resolution question

Hi all, I recently acquired an Avermedia Live Gamer Portable and I can't decide as to whether to record at 1080p/30FPS or 720p/60FPS. I'll mainly be playing Wii U titles (Mario Maker/ Splatoon) and XBOX One titles (Halo MCC/ GOW)

If it makes and difference my Webcam is 1080p (Logitech C920 to be exact) and most videos on my channel are 1080p/ 60FPS as I mainly play PC games All comments and advice are greatly appreciated

Oops Capture Card Question!

Well I just posted this on the wrong account so I'm gonna post it on this one instead just to be copacetic.

I know this question has probably been asked a thousand times and I could probably go find some videos about it but, I've gotten a lot of good advice from this subreddit and I like engaging with the community.

Right now I currently stream my Xbox using my Xbox app and Windows 10. This is quick and dirty and gets the job done but it's by no means the best solution. (Some games don't look as good, the app itself crashes a lot, the party system doesn't work reliably, etc etc.)

I'm looking to grab a capture card. I would like one that is relatively affordable and that is pretty easy to set up. I'm not partnered so I'm streaming down scaled to 720 at 30 fps and that works just fine for me. Any advice or recommendations would be great. I would like a USB powered one for now with the intention of maybe moving to a PCI slotted one in the future.

Thanks!

New TV - 4K or 1080p?

I currently have a Samsung 51" 720p plasma TV and would like something bigger with better resolution. So I'm curious what TV I should purchase, 4K making this decision more difficult.

  • My budget is in the $700-$1000 dollar range, with hopes of finding something around $850.
  • I should also note that I've got a $500 gift card to best buy, so it's got to be available there.
  • I use the TV to game on both a PS4 and XBOX One, also lots of Netflix/Sling/Amazon Prime.
  • 3D doesn't matter to me.
  • As 4K content becomes available on Netflix I'm sure I'll watch it, but I don't buy blue ray's.
  • One thing I love about my current TV is that it allows me to play .mkv files directly from a USB drive, this would be nice to have on the new TV as well, although I don't think this is advertised so I'll have to test in person.
  • 55" is the size I'm currently set on, maybe 60".
  • I sit about 8-9 feet from my TV.

Should I be thinking ahead and buy a 4K TV or buy a 1080p TV? I'm sure both will be a noticeable upgrade over my current 720p TV.

Two TV's I'm considering:

VIZIO - M-Series - 55" - LED - 2160p (M55-C2) VIZIO - 60" - LED - 1080p (E60-C3)

My story of the journey to Ascension!

Let me tell you a story, of a boy, of a console peasant. Way back when, when I was in fifth grade, i used to play the MMORPG RuneScape on this terrible old computer. Before that all I did was play games on a GameBoy. In sixth grade I got a shiny new Xbox 360 and a game called Halo Reach. After that all I did was play console games, nonstop. My Freshman year, I bought an Xbox one, and Sophomore year I bought a PlayStation Four in order to play the game Bloodborne. (As I love Miyazaki's work) I'd always wanted to get a PC, but they were a bit too expensive for me, or so I thought. Fast forward to last week. I had finally worked enough to get a PC. My current plan is to learn animation and video/photo editing. So for a grand total of $700, I got... 24 gigs of ddr3 ram I7-4790 3.6 Ghz processor 2tb hard drive GTX 720 (which I'm going to upgrade to a 4gb 960 when I get more money.) So all in all I'm very happy with the computer and excited to have finally ascended to the PCMasterRace. (I posted this before but I'm bad at reddit and did it wrong.)

Reviews:

GMR Reviews - 4.7/5

Halo 5: Guardians is one hell of a rollercoaster for Halo fans. From the sombre and sad times to the action packed thrill ride, it surely was an incredible experience all around.

Source

Polygon - 9.0/10

Halo 5 feels like it knows its obligations. The campaign's narrative is likely to prove controversial, though its biggest sin may be its familiarity. Otherwise, Halo 5 excels under the pressure, providing one of the most welcoming, competitive, balanced and fun games of the year — and providing my personal favorite Halo multiplayer since the series began.

Source

Giant Bomb - 4.0/5

You'll spot some rough edges and notice some omissions, but Halo 5 looks great, plays well, and has enough options to keep you coming back.

Source

IGN - N/A

Developer 343 Industries has engineered the strongest combat Halo has ever seen, with tons of excellent weapons, varied maps, an expansive and intense new multiplayer mode joining a host of returning greats, and some game-changing new mobility. At the same time, Guardians repeats Halo 4’s mistake of telling a story that can’t stand on its own without Halo’s expanded universe. This hurts, but doesn’t ruin, its otherwise impressive cooperative campaign.

Source

TIME - 3.5/5

If you’re a Halo fan, Halo 5‘s probably going to feel like coming home, a graphically muscled version of a formula that’s resonated with devotees since 2001. It’s just like the other annualized multimillions franchises, in other words, only with its installments shrewdly spaced years apart, to keep us inquisitive, and expectant.

Source

AR12 Gaming - 9.0/10

Incredible – Halo 5: Guardians takes you on a journey, a hunter-versus-hunted narrative across 15 Campaign missions. While some are short, the Campaign is full of high-octane action. Add that to the impressive new Arena and Warzone modes, and you have the best Halo Multiplayer you can find. All lag-free and on Dedicated Servers. Thankfully, the issues that plagued Master Chief Collection and no-where to be seen.

Source

Cybershack News - 4.0/5

Halo's next-generation debut is a fun, sci-fi romp that's sure to please the series' fans. While 343 Industries has made a number of controversial changes, the game still feels like Halo. I miss split-screen multiplayer, and I miss campaign score-keeping, but those absences didn't stop me from enjoying the game. At the same time, if you're not already a Halo fan, Halo 5 probably won't convert you. Halo 5 is a great game, but it is still Halo. I’d say that’s what most fans are after though.

Source

This Gen Gaming - 9.5/10

Halo 5: Guardians is one hell of a rollercoaster for Halo fans. From the sombre and sad times to the action packed thrill ride, it surely was an incredible experience all around. As a fan who has played every main Halo, one of my favourite things about this game in particular is the tremendous amount of respect a lot of the characters have for the Master Chief, even though they are trying to track him down and, for all intents and purposes, arrest him. There are some heart-warming, flanked very quickly by some heart-breaking moments but one thing’s for sure, this is possibly the greatest Halo game ever made. It’s a heavy title, one that is very well-deserved by 343 with this game.

Source

Team Beyond - 8.0/10 SPOILER WARNING

Overall, the story of Halo 5: Guardians was told extremely well and was understandable to those who have only played the games and not read the extended fiction.

[Build Ready] Upgrading my PC for low-key gaming for the next ~4 years. Need some help.

Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes, hopefully I won't break any.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming on low settings (comparable to consoles) and day-to-day usage, university projects (which mostly requires Office, Eclipse, and Python for the moment).

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)

  • Low settings
  • Whatever I can get between 720p-1080p (I can compromise for less if the game is very demanding or poorly optimized, and don't expect to get more)

  • Targeting 30 FPS with as little unbearable framedrops as possible (more would be welcome, of course)

  • Low anti-aliasing (if any), medium-to-low draw distance and everything else. As long as the game runs and doesn't look completely horrendous, it will be fine.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

~$200-250 for the entire upgrade (see below what I consider upgrading).

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Israel. It's about 35% more expensive than the US for anything that has to do with technology.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

My current build (not potential, I actually own it): http://pcpartpicker.com/user/idosc/saved/WTM2FT *Note, the CPU, GPU, and motherboard are the actual components inside my machine, the others are equivalents.

Potential new components:

  • Radeon R7 260x 2GB

  • 2x4GB RAM cards

  • A new fan for the CPU (looking for suggestions).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

So I've had this computer for a few years, on its first year or two it could run the little amount of games I threw at it pretty well on medium settings. I want to get very comparable performance to consoles or even slightly worse if that's impossible. I'd be fine with running everything on 720p, low settings overall etc as long as it still looks bearable (not much worse than what an Xbox 360 game would look like, for example), and as long as my PC will last on these settings for 2-4 more years.

I'm a student so my budget is low and I don't do a lot of gaming anyways, but when I do I want it to work. If you're going to say that my PC will not be able to run anything at all and think that I should upgrade everything that's fine, but if you think that it can run most things for the next couple of years, even poorly, with just one or two hardware upgrades, please stick to that.

My questions:

  1. Will this PC be able to run games on the settings mentioned with the R7 260x? If not, will it be able to do so with 8GB RAM as well (instead of the current 4GB)?

  2. If you believe that adding the R7 260x is not enough of an upgrade to redeem this part list, which GPU would you add instead (if any)?

  3. Are there any recommended CPU fans for an LGA1156 socket?

Thank you!

lol

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_with_HD_support

Original Xbox could do 720p. Granted, a lot of these games arent that hardware intensive, but a few(Conker Live and Reloaded) look amazing even at 480p.

Keep in mind that the xbox is almost 15 years old and could push HD graphics, sometimes even at 60fps(Soulcalibur 2)

Laptop to TV - Better Quality

Hi all,

I have tried tweaking this quite a bit, and maybe it isn't possible, but I figured I'd ask before assuming.

I want to hook my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga to my TV via the mini HDMI port with a mini to regular HDMI cable. The TV is a 720p TV and is a Plasma. It just doesn't look right, and regardless of resolution I choose, parts of the screen aren't on screen. It also seems like maybe the color is off, or it's washed out. I'm not sure how to describe it.

The ultimate goal is to stream my xbox one to my laptop and be shown on the TV.

Does anyone know the best settings to make this look like it would on my computer's screen?

Comcast spreading misinformation /rant

This is long.. Sorry for typos. It has angered up the soul.

So I recently made a post on my apartment complexes internal message board concerning the Comcast data caps and some alternatives. A reply was posted by another member of the complex (my reply after the quote):

Eric S Just a word about Comcast - The data caps have been in place for a while. This is nothing new. and if you use more than 300BG - you are really a power user. Even if you use NETFLIX a lot -- you will get 1000 (ONE THOUSAND) hours of "good quality. Or 10,000 HOURS of Music streaming. I know lots of people hate Comcast. But I work for NBCUniversal - so I have a bit knowledge. The whole idea of "capping" service scares people. But there is a certain reality to this. MOST people don't even use 100GB of service a month. And even heavier users rarely exceed 200. Don't let the 300GB cap be the deterrent. Be thankful you don't have TWC. Comcast is 10x better.. and I am not just saying that because I work for the big conglomerate.

Sorry, there's a little misinformation there...

Want to watch netflix at SD quality? Yeah fine, but HD is 3GB to 7GB per hour. so 42-100 hours will use all your data limit.

Even at SD, it uses 0.7GB per hour, so that's only 428 hours of viewing.

Now imagine you have 2, or 3 devices streaming content (you know, family?) then that's only 12 hours of content streaming per month per person.

(Source: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/87 )

Audio streaming at high quality is around 115MB per hour, so only 2,600 hours of streaming ONLY music before it eats up data. Yeah, that's not too high, but imagine that, on top of Video streaming from someplace like Netflix or Hulu, or Amazon Prime video, etc.

Want to watch music videos instead of just listen, on youtube, in HD? 15MB a minute in 720p or double that to 30MB a minute for 1080p. That's 166 hours of youtube video watching before the cap.

Oh hey! Let's keep going. You want to download a video game (for PC gamers, Steam) or you have a Xbox One or PS4 and want to play that new game? Well that uses data also, in some cases, a LOT of data. Grand Theft Auto V for PC is a 60GB download! Ok, you have a console?! Well GTAV is on the disk but you download (in just the Heist patch for example) 5GB of updates. Want to stream those games via Twitch to your friends? ~1GB an hour outbound.

So, Comcast, being the ever "consumer friendly" and "good service" company, instead of just saying that "We just want more money!" will instead just gouge customers for extra fees, contracts and still have unreliable service that is years behind the technology curve.

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/212376-comcast-admits-that-its-data-caps-are-a-business-decision-not-an-engineering-requirement

They don't CARE about anything other than making money, while suing people into allowing their monopolistic practices.

http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/1/8530403/chattanooga-comcast-fcc-high-speed-internet-gigabit

They are anti-competitive, anti-innovation, against an open and free internet, and lock you, as a costumer into their services like a prisoner. The data caps are NEW, and they just want to make more money, without doing ANYTHING to make it feel like it's worth it.

They aren't the only company that does this. AT&T is just as guilty but not as wide spread. The fact is, COMCAST (like Time Warner) is a MEDIA production company, as well as a media DELEIVERY company, so when contracts come up, the smaller companies can’t compete, and they essentially force you to use their own media services because they can provide it “cheaper” since they can force lower contracts deals. Why do you think Internet service alone is more expensive than the “combo” packages with Internet and Cable TV service?

Comcast is a horrible, abysmal company.

I have also worked for a cable company, I’ve been in IT for many, many years, and have a very good grasp on how the industry works. Don’t drink the Kool-Aid. They don’t care about you.

Looking to get my first NAS

Hey guys, I have 2 TB of media currently which I would like to move from my computer to a NAS. I noticed a lot of people want plex servers but I don't know the advantages of this over DS Video for example? I hope to be able to stream the movies from my NAS to my own PC for example, maybe to the TV downstairs when watching stuff over chromecast. I'm a student, so I assume when I go home my brother will want to watch things over his PC too or Xbox for example, I doubt it will hardly ever be used on devices such as iPads.

I have been looking into the DS214Play, DS215+, and some others. I honestly don't know whats best and what to consider. Hopefully someone can give me some advice :) My library consists of mostly 1080p and 720p videos.

Also, does a wired connect work? For example, if the NAS was connected to my PC does that mean I can connect to it directly and access the files that way for example. Hopefully not a dumb question, and if anyone can help thanks!

Power Supply: Bxp600-ps Pc Power Supply / 120 Mm Red Bearing Fan / ATX 2.2 / 115-230 V / Single Rail 12v / 1xpci-e+4xmolex+4sata Sentey® Red Fan Cooler / 70% Efficiency / Over Power Protection / Over Voltage Protection / Short Circuit Protection / Under Voltage Protection / Black Chassis Color / Red Fan - 25$

I already have a antec 900 tower.

If you can't tell I am on a VERY tight budget.
My questions are as follows:
1. Will this build work together?
2. Will this meet my needs?
3. Can I get anymore bang for my buck. (total 175$ on amazon for all of this)

Thank you for all of the help

CPU Usage when streaming with Xsplit

Hello! I am a new streamer and I am trying to figure out an issue I have been having. First, here is my set up..

i5-4690k @ 3.50GHz 8GB RAM GTX 970 Elgato HD60

I primarily stream Xbox One, so when I built my PC... I didnt think I needed to go all out with specs. Basically, when I stream using Xsplit I hit between 70-100 percent of my CPU. I am capturing my webcam and Xbox One (with the HD60). Only other things I will have running is the Twitch dashboard and the Xbox One app on Windows 10. I use that for party chat. I stream at 720p 30fps. I am at a lost at what it could be. When I hit about 90-100 percent the Xbox App party chat starts to get choppy.

Any suggestions or help would be great!

PSA: The graphical fidelity triangle (refreshed)

The problem: Not a lot of people understand how FPS/resolution/detail are all related to one another, and how they can be re-balanced on the same hardware for free. Some think it's one or the other. Some think it's all dependent on software. Some think all three are entirely chosen by the developer and that we're entitled for wanting them to be better. Look no more, this post will explain all three as well as their relationships with each other and the games/hardware they control. [mobile version]

Graphical fidelity can be defined as the combination of any amount of the three things that make up beautiful games (or virtual beauty in general): detail, resolution, and framerate.

The three-point triangle is made up of:

Resolution.

Detail. (draw distance, particles, AI, textures, effects, lighting, etc)

Framerate.

The dot can be moved anywhere in the triangle. In this example triangle, let's try and simulate an Xbox One's hardware and calibrate the three points accordingly. We see that detail is the most important, meaning it'll probably look pretty nice - bleeding edge, almost. FPS isn't as important, so it's probably sitting somewhere around 45FPS. Finally, we have resolution with the absolute least amount of priority, meaning it's likely sitting at 720p.

Detail /\ /. \ / \ FPS /______\ Resolution - The yin, the yang, and the yo. All three are in a harmonic relationship. - The corner of a specific attribute represents the highest that attribute can go (example, 4k) if the others are at their absolute least - The opposite wall of a corner represents the lowest an attribute can get (for example, 480p) - Changing any one effects the remaining two. Changing any of the two greatly effects the remaining one. - Raising one without subtracting another requires power beyond the triangle, such as overclocks, upgrades, and driver/API updates. - You, as a PC gamer, have the power to modify this both internally and externally. As a peasant, you have neither. - Every game ever made theoretically has the ability to adjust these three points, within a certain range as far as detail goes.
  • "Internal" refers to the three the triangle's points.
  • "External" refers to what was mentioned in the triangle illustration: overclocks, upgrades, updates, etc.

The GPU: A GPU has a limited amount of processing power. A GPU will work as fast as it possibly can and output as many frames as possible unless it's told to pause until a specific amount of time has passed (framerate cap).

Higher graphical details make the card take longer to complete a frame. Sometimes they take an entire second to draw together a frame (they need to draw the geometry, the textures, the lighting, everything!). If you want higher details, you have to sacrifice framerates or resolution. If you don't need higher details, you can keep it the same or lower it and make room for higher resolutions or better framerates.

Higher resolutions further stress GPUs. They need to handle this same beautiful scene, but "dice" it among an even sharper grid of pixels. Each additional pixel adds more work to the GPU. If you want a higher resolution, you have to either sacrifice framerate, or lower the details to make up for the higher amount of GPU power required.

And, what's left over, is your framerate. This is still part of the triangle, but it's not something you directly control. It's something left over as a result of your GPUs assigned task at a given framerate or resolution. If you want a higher framerate, you have to lower either of the two others. If you don't mind a lower framerate, you have the freedom to raise either of the two others.

The developer: Game developers have the task of finding the balance. They build a game to look nice, but not too nice to the point where the GPU struggles to achieve playable framerates at moderate details. This isn't to be confused with bad optimization - bad optimization occurs when the FPS tanks without visuals getting any better because the game is inefficient. Then, they add controllable settings to increase or decrease the graphical fidelity of the game. Lower settings results in less work for the GPU per-frame, which results in more frames being able to be completed per second. Same goes for higher settings, which are sometimes too high for modern cards to handle at playable framerates (which is nice, because your game gets better with age as cards arise to fill up the higher capabilities).

The gamer: You, as the PC gamer, control all three points of the fidelity triangle. You have the freedom to prioritize any number of the three points. If you want one thing, you just lower the other things. If you want all 3 to be awesome, you can center the dot or purchase a better graphics card to increase all 3 if it's not enough (see "external enhancement" by the illustration).

Further info

The fidelity triangle is something peasants really struggle with. They don't understand how these three points relate to and effect each other, and they don't understand that they can easily be controlled. Learning about this and sharing the knowledge with others will hopefully eventually make this misunderstanding history.

PS4 doesn't work with HDMI but works with DVI

So this is a strange issue that isn't much of a problem for me but I find it wired, and would like to know what is causing it.

So when I got my ps4 back in January 2014. I remember hooking it up to the HDMI port on my TV and getting no picture, I thought I got a defective system but I found a HDMI to DVI connector hooked it up to the TV and it worked. I assumed that the HDMI on my TV was broken so I have to use DVI which doesn't carry sound but I use a headset plugged into the controller so sound from the TV doesn't matter. So I've been using the PS4 on DVI ever since.

Fast forward to two weeks ago and I bought myself an Xbox One. I swapped out the PS4's HDMI cable with Xbox One's HDMI for the DVI connection, because I was assuming the HDMI on my TV was broken. I just plugged the PS4 cable into the HDMI port for easy access when I want to switch the cables round and play PS4.

Now fast forward to today. I was swapping the cables round, PS4 into DVI connector, XB1 into HDMI port. When I finished doing that I accidentally turned on the Xbox One, the TV auto changed to the HDMI channel and there was picture! I could see the Xbox One! So I plugged the PS4 back into the HDMI port and when I tried it I got no picture or sound.

So my TV's HDMI is fine it seems to be a PS4 issue, but what could be causing this? It's not a big deal I'm just curious. The TV is about 5 or 6 years old and I'm not sure what resolution it is. I know it can reach 720p but not 1080p, I think it's some strange resolution between the two of those.

TL;DR Xbox One works with HDMI, PS4 doesn't. Why?

Anyone who has used the Steam controller - Your input would be appreciated

I've been needing a controller for a while and I'm unsire about which controller to buy. So far I had been using an Xbox One controller for games, but I seem to have uhh...misplaced it.

With the release of the Steam controller there have been a few mixed reviews. Some say that your thumbs strain very easily and that the quality of the material isn't very good.

However, being roughly the same price as the XB1 controller and coming with a USB dongle packaged with it, I thought I'll ask around to see what others think.

Anyone who has experienced the controller please give your thoughts of the Steam controller below. Below is a list of games which I plan on using it for:

  • Civilization V (Since I usually play for 2-4 hours a session, sitting at a desk for that amount of time to just use left and right click seems a bit pointless)
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Rocket League (How are those 720 no-scope flips)

Connecting Chromecast to a Denon 1312 problems...help?

I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere, but I'm not finding anything. Maybe my brain just hurts or I'm an idiot. I've been using a 1st gen Chromecast in my bedroom since it first came out. I wanted to use it in the living room, but when I plug it into any one of the HDMI inputs on my Denon 1312, I get nothing. I used to use the receiver to run a cable box, Xbox, and Blu-Ray to an old 720p Sanyo (gift from 2009). After cutting cable, I now just have an old PC hooked up to the receiver. I'm curious about whether the Chromecast can completely replace the PC, so I hooked it up, but the TV didn't recognize it. Well, to be specific--if I plug the Chromecast directly into the TV, the TV registers it. But, I've tried all of the ports on the back of the receiver, and nothing. I even used the one port that I absolutely knew worked--the PC.

So: problem is with receiver. I can't determine whether it is a configuration problem on my end, or if it is an incompatibility issue. Any thoughts?

Would this be a good excuse to buy a new Chromecast?

Thanks in advance for the advice--I appreciate it!

My dream scenario for watching F1 at home

This is my dream scenario for watching F1 at home, it’s essentially a Netflix style streaming service with a mix of on demand content and live streams covering all the races, qualifying sessions and practice sessions from multiple cameras.

So, for your $10 – 12 dollar a month subscription fee (or $100 for a full year) you would get:

Live, ad free coverage of:

  • Test sessions

  • P1, P2 and P3

  • Qualifying

  • Race

These would include spilt screen options to either have timing boards, live tracker or in car footage (of any driver, including the front and rear views of the pace car) displayed alongside the standard TV coverage.

On demand access to:

  • Full replays of all sessions and the race (with no result spoilers when you log in!)

  • 1 hour highlight package of the race weekend

  • All of the videos available on F1.com

  • All of the previous season review packages

  • F1 movies: Rush, Senna, 1 etc

Choice of multiple languages for the commentary.

Subtitles for both live and on demand content.

Broadcast in 4k, 1080, 720 and 480 (selectable by the user).

Available on the web, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, Roku, Fire TV etc

Hopefully Bernie reads reddit and gets this up and running in time for pre-season testing 2016 :)

Any chance of a new PS4 streaming device?

PSTV fails miserably as a streaming device I bought one at launch and another one about 3 months ago and found that it still stinks when trying to stream a game from the PS4 to a remote location in the house wired!

Tons of latency, shitty 720p resolution and an overall bad experience.

Having bought the new Steam Link and controller recently and using the XBOX one's remote streaming application I have to say IM very impressed with both offerings especially Steams link it's basically 1:1 no latency at all and 1080p streaming. I don't see why they can't make a $50.00 streaming only box for the home.

So the question is does anyone think Sony is going to releases a new version of PSTV or a streaming box / PC application that will allow people to play the PS4 remotely any time soon?

As of Today, I have accepted the PC Master Race as being superior

I used to be a peasant, playing my white xbox 360 and my Wii U for the length of the day. Plagued with shitty netcode, horrid graphics, and shaky framerates, I Decided that it was time for an upgrade. I was originally planning on getting an xbox one, but i heard a faint whisper from my 230$ laptop. That whisper soon turned into eventually turned into a cough, and my laptop was dead. Wondering what i was going to do, i started searching online for an upgrade. I then found this rumor of this thing called "PC building". It sounded fantastical, saving money AND being able to game on a PC? What is this nonsense! I then proceeded to go to amazon and order a new laptop, but then i found this channel called "Austin Evans". Soon after that i thought, "PC Building may be easy but i don't have 8k to spend". Then, in my recommended videos feed, the person who saved me from making a huge mistake showed up in a beam of shimmering light. JayzTwoCents.I saw his budget pc builds and quickly rushed to this foreign land, "PCPartPicker". There i assembled my weapons of war to fight the slow, hulking potatoes chasing me along the way(Build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/6cBpcf ) .I will march on with my wii u in one hand(Smash is life) and my new weapon, my Pc. I have offically risen above the 720p and 900p, and I will join the ranks of many a man before me. HAIL GABEN.

If you're having problems with lag, here's something you could try.

Me, I found dropping the Xbox one's resolution to 720p and then calibrating. It's especially helped me with the drums, Seeing as the drums are kind of iffy right now.

[Purchasing Help] Pondering a Monitor Upgrade

I currently have an acer s231HLbid, an older 1080p acer IPS display. it's super thin, has hdmi/dvi/vga, and a vesa mount. i have 3 problems with it. the first is that the height is not adjustable, which would be a nice feature to have right now. the second is that recently when i was trying to set it up on the desk without the stand, it fell over and got a couple of little scratches on the screen. they're pretty deep, and while they only cover probably 20 pixels total, it's annoying to see those spots in the corner of the screen. the third is that the glossy bezel and stand with no adjustments feel kinda cheap, and i'd like a monitor with a "premium" feel to it. with that in mind, i've found the AOC i2367Fh, but a lot of people seem to have beef with the stand, which is apparently wobbly. if it wobbles when i touch it, i have no problem with that, but i want it to sit flat and even when i'm not moving it, and i don't know if this can do that. the other main similar monitor that I liked was the Dell u2414H, which is more than i was hoping to pay for a regular 1080p monitor. moving away from those 2, i liked the Acer G257HU smidpx, which is one inch larger, like $20 more expensive than the dell, and is 1440p, and looks good as well. the only issue I would have with this is how well pixel scaling works if i were to plug in an input only capable of 1080p or 720p or something similar, which leads to the next monitor, which is a bit more expensive, but i think it would suit me well, because I watch a lot of movies, and also enjoy the screen real estate of 2 monitors, but only have oom for 1 at the moment. the LG 29UM67 fits just about every need I have for a monitor, but I'm hesitatn to just go for it because I have a question that i haven't been able to get answered: if i use the hdmi and plug in, say, an xbox that displays at 1080p 16:9, would it display in the center with black bars on both sides, or stretch it across the extra real estate, distorting the picture?

are there any monitors that I didn't consider, but should've?

TL;DR: get a better 24" 1080p, upgrade to 25" 1440p, buy an ultrawide or just stick with current monitor until the other options become cheaper?

side question: what happens if I plug a raspberry pi into a 1440p monitor with hdmi?
