PS4 doesn't work with HDMI but works with DVI

So this is a strange issue that isn't much of a problem for me but I find it wired, and would like to know what is causing it.

So when I got my ps4 back in January 2014. I remember hooking it up to the HDMI port on my TV and getting no picture, I thought I got a defective system but I found a HDMI to DVI connector hooked it up to the TV and it worked. I assumed that the HDMI on my TV was broken so I have to use DVI which doesn't carry sound but I use a headset plugged into the controller so sound from the TV doesn't matter. So I've been using the PS4 on DVI ever since.

Fast forward to two weeks ago and I bought myself an Xbox One. I swapped out the PS4's HDMI cable with Xbox One's HDMI for the DVI connection, because I was assuming the HDMI on my TV was broken. I just plugged the PS4 cable into the HDMI port for easy access when I want to switch the cables round and play PS4.

Now fast forward to today. I was swapping the cables round, PS4 into DVI connector, XB1 into HDMI port. When I finished doing that I accidentally turned on the Xbox One, the TV auto changed to the HDMI channel and there was picture! I could see the Xbox One! So I plugged the PS4 back into the HDMI port and when I tried it I got no picture or sound.

So my TV's HDMI is fine it seems to be a PS4 issue, but what could be causing this? It's not a big deal I'm just curious. The TV is about 5 or 6 years old and I'm not sure what resolution it is. I know it can reach 720p but not 1080p, I think it's some strange resolution between the two of those.

TL;DR Xbox One works with HDMI, PS4 doesn't. Why?
