Not quite green, not quite black, but not quite right. Intermittent screen issues on startup?? Yet it works fine in 640x480? Seems a unique issue, no solution found? (Not scrambled or anything either.)

Started happening a few weeks ago.

When I start my XB1 it doesn't hang on the green screen and doesn't just display a black screen. Instead it displays about 3" on the left side of the screen. So I can see it starts green, sound works fine, goes to the home screen and there is actually enough screen space for me to see the very left of the menus, enough for me to actually get to the display options and change the resolution.

And if I do that and change to 640x480 the entire thing displays just fine on the center of my screen. Any attempt to change this to 720p or 1080p results in black and a few inches of properly displayed screen on the left.

Now I say intermittent because for a while I was able to get it to work after restarting the TV/Console a bunch and it might have just been me but hitting some buttons on the controller seemed to work sometimes. The number of times I would have to try varied from right away...and now never. It just won't work anymore.

Things I have tried?

Hard Reset.

No really, hard reset. A bunch of times.

Changing the output on the console to HDMI from AUTO

Changing the resolution (640x480p displays the entire screen but very small)

Checked and reset my TV picture settings. They're the same default settings I've been using forever.

Reset TV through it's menu.

Hard reset TV by removing all power for 30+ minutes (that's what the manufacturer instructions say to do...)

Hard reset.

Console reset

Manual update through diagnostic boot and USB stick

Hard reset....

New HDMI cable

Different HDMI ports

Xbox support - they told me to do a manual offline update, which I had already done but did again anyway.

unplugged all power to TV and console and power brick and left for a few days.

None of that has worked. So any ideas?

I think the next few months will be great for patches for PS4 Pro games - Thx XBOX X!

Starting with MGSV being patched tomorrow, I think many existing games will get XBX enhancements, which will trickle down to the Pro.

Also, I think lots more games will start offering action mode (720 or 900 p/60fps) vs cinematic mode 1440p+/30fps), good times aplenty coming :)

UI text too small

I play on a 32" 720p TV with an Xbox one, my couch is about eight feet away. I have so much trouble reading any of the text and making out the golden icons on the sand colored map. Has this been a problem with anyone else? I wish there was a way to increase the size. I don't really want to have to buy a bigger TV just for this (because I will if I have to, and I sure as hell can't afford it)

What video output resolutions does the Xbox One X have?

I have seen ALOT of information coming from the community about the Xbox One X - what I haven’t seen anything of is the video output resolutions!

I stream regularly via twitch through HDMI, currently limited to 720p/60fps when streaming, can I still choose this as an output?

Cheers

Digital Foundry: Wolfenstein 2 graphics & framerate comparison (Xbox One X can't come soon enough)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxVD5z3Kj64

PS4 Pro struggles here and there with the framerate but what's most important right now is :

PS4 Pro - 1440p PS4 - 1080p XB1 - 810p

Usually when a game is 1080p on PS4 it's at least 900p on Xbox One but 810p? Again, One X can't come here soon enough. I for one am beyond tired of 720p, between that and 900p and even 1080p to be honest. Time for that 4K goodness, yes even checkerboard 4K. Definitely.

Low-end recording

Hey Reddit! I want to start making content on YouTube, and it may seem far fetched, but my PC’s specs aren’t the greatest. Im rocking an Intel Core i3 6100, 8Gb 2400 DDR4 Memory, and an MSi RX 470 4gb. I want to be able to record my games at 720p60 at the LEAST. I’ve tried SO many different softwares. I’ve used the Xbox DVR, AMD ReLive, Bandicam, Fraps, Xsplit, OBS and OBS Studio , and so on. Its incredible how bad some of these recording softwares are as they cause IMMENSE Input lag. Im kind of a competitive person so I cant STAND the slightest but of input lag. OBS Studio is the only one that does cause input lag. But it comes out like crap because I put the bitrate to 3000 on the h.264 AMD Framework. SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!?

Could this cheap chinese capture card be good for recording/streaming retro games?

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F172166653077

This thing has chinese written all over it, however it does work. Work well? Kind of maybe? I've been looking up as much info as I can and found some footage of ps4/xbox streamers using it and it wasnt exactly terrible. Some stutter here and there maybe was the most i noticed with a normal viewing session.

But say someone used this for less intensive games. I'd use it for PS2 at most. Mostly snes/genesis, psx and saturn. With the image upscaled do you think the quality the card gives off would be alright? My only worries would maybe be lag from the console to the monitor, though the connection is pcie so it should in theory be a fast connection right?

My best solution would be a elgato hd 60 pro, though that would put me $160ish in the hole. Anybody have experience with these chinese knockoffs? Thanks.

One other thing to note, the box these cards come in says "HD 1080p" but in fact the highest resolution they support is 1080i. 720p is fine for me since its the highest twitch will support.

Aviso de Utilidad Pública: Penca el HBO Go

Estimados,

This new Xbox One app... 720p only(?!), and more issues

https://imgur.com/a/kZm9b

  • Can't be changed, apparently;
  • The extra goodies that come with the Plex Pass have disappeared;
  • Pressing B to remove the timeline after rewinding or pausing now exits the video instead;
  • Left and right trigger no longer rewind and fast forward the way they used to and now it's only 10/30 second skips;
  • Dropped subtitles
  • and so forth

Are there any plans of fixing this or are we stuck with this? I paid nice money for my Plex Pass, hot damn. Would like my goodies back.

Thank you

Any plans for a switch port?

The hardware specs are not an issue. It's -pretty much- confirmed it running on Pascal based Tegra X2 which has 60% of the GPU throughput of Xbox One which would be plenty for the 720p touchscreen.

I need help...

Hello fellow Xbox Users! I’m in a bit of a pickle. Ok so deep breath I was playing Xbox at my house on a tv that allows 1080p so that is what my Xbox was set to. After moving into a friends place and bringing another tv with me, I set it up and it wasn’t displaying only for me to realize that this tv doesn’t take 1080p but 720p and no tv in her apartment can handle 1080p (yea...I’m serious). And I can’t control or display my Xbox on a laptop to help me change since I’ve never had the chance to connect to the WiFi. So I would love it if someone could help blindly guide me to where I can change my tv resolution like “move three clicks right, press A, two clicks down” and so on. Is anyone out there willing to help me out! :(

Knights of the Old Republic is backwards compatible on Xbox One!

Microsoft has officially brought backwards compatibility for original Xbox games to the Xbox One. There are a few titles currently available, with more to come. One of the main titles they've been advertising is KotOR! I dusted off my old disc to try it out. Apparently they use pixel doubling to improve the quality on modern TVs. I was actually surprised to see how good it looks. I recorded the first few minutes of my new playthrough. The video is 720p unfortunately so it looks slightly worse than it does on the actual Xbox.

EDIT: You can also purchase a digital version on the Xbox store as well, which is super cool.

The Xbox1X is bad for gaming.

I with the recent discussion about AAA games and how they need insane sales to stay profitable because of huge budgets, and how they introduce microtransactions such as Lootboxes to monetize their product to break even, i thought about the XB1X and how it seems to me that it will push Gaming in a bad direction.

First of all, this is not me saying i hate the XB1X, but that i think it chases after something that will be bad for gaming.

The XB1X, in all its technical marvel is essentially just made to push 4K, since the cpu us not significantly stronger than their competitor, and will thus not allow for much more complex games.

The problem i see with that pursuit of 4K is tied to the current pricing of games.

A AAA game that is made in 1080p will usually cost 60$ , and the same Game made in 4k is expected to cost the same 60$ as the 1080p game, even though i think everyone can agree that 4k assets are harder to produce, and are thus more expensive to manufacture.

I fear that just like how back in the XB360/PS3 era, when games made the jump from SD to HD, essentially jumping from 360p to 720p, a huge amount of third party studios died, according to some estimates the number of AAA Developers went from 125 down to 25, it could happen again with the current situation.

Is 4K game development really already developed enough ? Not from a hardware capability standpoint, but from a Software development cost standpoint since costs to make a game are rising, and 4K will only fasten that growth.

What do you think ?

Original Xbox Games - will the PAL versions run at 60hz?

As the original Xbox launched during the whole 50/60hz drama of the early 2000's for us Europeans (which the Dreamcast tried to resolve and the Xbox did a better job by baking the option into the dashboard), some games, like Halo 1, did not support 60hz and force 50hz.

You could technically softmod the console to force 60hz but it could cause visual issues (Halo and Rollercoaster Tycoon having an incredibly jarring permanent frameskip), or things like gameplay and cutscenes running faster than they should (Onimisha - voices often trailed behind animations in cutscenes). The 360 handled this by forcing 50hz on the title.

Now that the games are not being run from the disc... Will Microsoft instead download the US version when putting in a PAL disc, to avoid that whole drama? Here's hoping they do....

Edit: removed Panzer Dragoon Orta - as that issue was caused by forcing 720p on the PAL version. The PAL copy supported 60hz

So, how does the resolution work now?

As you all surely remember, in 2013 during the launch of Xbox One, among other things there was this 'resolution gate.' It meant that because of the worse specs of Xbox One compared to PS4, some games might run only in 720p/900p, whereas the PS version ran in 900p/1080p. This unfortunately still resonates among some people to this day, because those who didn't do actual research lately and just caught up with the circlejerks, still think, that games on Xbox only run in 720p. I've looked into it a little and found out that propably Dead Rising 3 and COD: Ghosts ran on Xbox only in 720p at that time. Also there was this arrival of DirectX 12 to Xbox, which is said to change some things even though, if I'm not mistaken, it doesn't straight up affect the graphics.

So my question is: doesn't anyone know how is it now? I'm pretty sure the situation was somehow fixed, because I think most of the newer games on Xbox One run at 1080p. But what about those that don't? Are those games upscaled to 1080p (I heard that GTA V runs in 720p but I don't know if it's upscaled or not)? And what about those older ones, that were said to run in 720p back in the day - COD: Ghosts, Dead Rising 3 etc., are those upscaled now too? And are 360 games and now even original Xbox games upscaled to 1080p or kept in their original resolution (I heard that some original Xbox games will be upscaled to 1080p, but I don't know if all the titles from original Xbox will be upscaled and if the 360 games are all/some upscaled too)?

Will DOOM 16 multiplayer survive on Switch?

So assuming the multiplayer has no issues beyond 720p 30fps being a problem for some, im curious if anyone thinks this game will last on Switch.

If we look back at the original launch for Xbox/PS4/PC we can all remember the bad word of mouth the multiplayer "beta" received. This made enthusiasm at launch pretty weak, though complaints about the beta all around had been pretty valid.

Then came the season pass....

So when the game launched, it had cheaters on PC pretty quickly and this has never been fixed so at this point I declare PC dead at launch.

Now for Xbox and PS4, the game actually had a pretty decent community for awhile. Progression was a problem. You instantly become showered armor rewards straight off the bat. None of this armor had any bragging rights and you got too much of it too quickly. Then there was no leaderboards... To top it off, no custom games... This I feel was a huge blow to the longevity of the game.

The next problem is one nobody likes to admit, especially from the "Its mediocre camp", the massive bulk of users sucked. Big time. This game was and is far harder then any console shooter. The skill gap was huge, which is something I liked about it.

So an arena shooter on console with no progression, leaderboards, or custom games. Yea, its easy to see how this got lost in a sea of aim down sight shooters. Unfortunate, but maybe next time id will handle the MP themselves.

So what could be different on Switch?

Well initial impressions wont be quite so sour, we know the DLC is launching with the Switch so the progression system and custom games will still be there. Bots too. Still no leaderboards : (

This is going to be the only FPS on Switch for awhile, and what FPS is going to come around that is as polished?

Until sometime in 2018, the Switch has free online.

If we look back over to PS4/Xbox, a lot of people seem to be into version 6.66 which we can assume is the version Switch will launch with. As far as I can tell on PS4, it actually gave the community some new life I did not really expect it to. I also gotta say total kudos to them for supporting this game when the numbers dropped off by such a large margin. The patch history for this game has been stellar and so has the support. Which is another reason I hope that the Switch can offer this game some sort of redemption.

So Switch is launching with version 6.66, all DLC, custom games, FFA, bots. Just a massive amount of stuff the PS4/Xbox did not have at launch. So what is going to hold the Switch back?

32 gigs of internal storage on Switch and this game has a 9 gig mandatory download to play online. This could be a huge blow, sure the Switch has cheap storage expansion options but what % of the userbase has expanded? It could prove to be an issue especially for people not digging it off the bat. I think its fair to say 9 gigs of mandatory space is a lot of baggage on this system. One that apparently could not have been avoided.

$60 launch price tag... This speaks for itself, how many copies of this game will even be sold?

Handheld mode controls. While a lot of users online will all be playing in handheld mode, it certainly has to be the worst way to play this game. Docked players with Ethernet adapters and pro controllers are going to totally destroy these guys if they have any experience with FPS, especially if they have played DOOM before.

Why are the DVD extended PAL and the BluRay extended editions of the movies different lengths? No its not the credits, its the FPS they play at.

Hi all

ive mentioned this a few times, and been called crazy, and that the different run times are due to fan credits on different versions ect. and not as i claim, due to the FPS of BluRay vs DVD PAL.

and ive always wanted to believe i was wrong. but ive always been away from the ability to check this for my self, and by the time i am home, i have forgotten..

tonight, i have been reminded, and i am able to check!

I am using the 2011 UK BluRay 3 movie set, and the Extended DVDs PAL version from the years they came out, ie 2002/2003/2004. and Playing them on an XBONE PAL.

in the table below is a full breakdown of the times. by disc, total time, no credits, only credits

Time source Fellowship Towers King
DVD1 1:41:19 1:42:11 2:02:22
DVD2 1:57:30 2:03:34 2:10:02
DVD full run time 3:38:49 3:45:45 4:12:24
DVD no credits 3:12:24 3:25:59 3:51:27
DVD credits 26:25 19:46 20:57
BR1 1:45:43 1:46:36 2:07:40
BR2 2:02:34 2:08:51 2:15:35
BR full run time 3:48:17 3:54:27 4:23:15
BR no credits 3:20:43 3:34:27 4:01:26
BR credits 27:34 20:00 21:49
Wiki time full 3:48:00 3:55:00 4:23:00
Wiki time no credits 3:28:00 3:43:00 4:11:00
Wiki time credits 20:00 12:00 12:00

so as you can see. there is a difference in run times of DVD Extended, BluRay Extended and wiki times.. which should not be the case. as they are all for the same movies.. all extended..

Time source DVD BR Wiki
Runtime full 11:36:58 12:05:59 12:06:00
No Credits 10:29:50 10:56:36 11:22:00
credits 1:07:08 1:09:23 0:44:00

so the credit times of DVD vs BluRay are only 2 mins out.. with Wiki being 23-25 mins out

but the actual movie run time, is 27 mins difference between the versions, and Wiki being 26-50 mins out

now one theory ive always given, and have proven below, is that the FPS they play back at is the culprit

movies are filmed at 24FPS. they are shown in Cinemas at 24FPS, but home video has a difference.. BluRay and DVD-NTSC both play at 24FPS, but DVD-PAL plays back at 25FPS..

what does this mean? well 2400 frames will take 100 seconds at 24FPS, but only 96 seconds at 25FPS.. now lets do a calculation from the BluRay of how many frames it should have at 24FPS over 12:05:59,

  • 12 hours x 60 = 720 mins
  • ((720mins + 5mins) x 60) + 59 = 42559 seconds
  • 42559 seconds X 24FPS = 1,045,416 frames. approx

but played back 1FPS faster, would only take

  • 1,045,416 frames / 25FPS = 41,816.64 seconds
  • 41,816 seconds / 60 = 696.944 mins
  • 696 mins / 60 = 11.6 hours

  • 0.6 hour = 36 mins

  • 0.944 min = 56.64 seconds

would equal 11 hours, 36 mins and 57.36 seconds.

which IS the DVD Extended PAL versions run time, to within 0.64 seconds... (calculating frames for the DVD version is 1,045,450 frames, or 34 frames more)

please note, i am unable to get the actual frame counts on the xbox, only to the second it rounds it too. hence the discrepancy of 34 frames or 0.64 seconds depending on calculation route

TL:DR

So anyone who has the PAL DVD Extended version of these movies, get the BluRay. you are NOT watching to full experience. We get almost 30 mins less over the 3 movies. due to FPS differences

Need advice!! Streaming and Gaming at the same time with Alienware 17 R4? OBS settings elgato HD60s?

Alienware 17 R4 Specs: -i7-7820HK (quad-core, 8mb cache, Overclocking up to 4.4GHz) -NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5X -16GB DDR4 at 2667MHz -1TB (64mb Cache) 7200 RPM SATA 6GB/s -17.3" UHD (3840x2160)

*Only reason i got this laptop instead of a desktop is because i travel a lot for work, So i needed something portable that can push out the power i needed to stream and play my games.

Anyways i was curious if my laptop can do both streaming and gaming at the the same time or is it too much on my CPU and GPU to run that kind of set up. I've been told that this is a very powerful laptop but i dont want to over heat it or damage it if it cant handle the load.

Another questions! So as of right now im gaming through my xbox one.. with the elgato HD60s to this laptop using OBS to stream.. and i can't seem to get a steady smooth stream using 1080p 60FPS or even 720p 60FPS. but it can run smoothly when i switch it to 30FPS. i know the elgato capture card pushes out 1080p 60FPS coming from my xbox one to my laptop but when i check the twitch channel it lags and just looks terrible. i feel like my settings are all wrong. ive watch youtube and tried different settings. nothing ive tried or searched for have worked. im getting 130+download and 13+upload also. It also feels like im not using this laptop to its full potential either.

Any advice will be good advice! im just stuck at the moment on trying to figure all of that out. let me know!!!

The Evil Within 2 shines on PS4 - but Xbox One and PC fall short

fail

the PC game appears incapable of getting the most out of your hardware, meaning that a locked 60fps was off the table during our testing - even with an overclocked i7 and the mighty Titan Xp... running at 720p.

On the new Home screen, they can see when their friends are playing a game they’ve added to Home, see how their Achievements stack up against their friends, check out the latest games in Xbox Game Pass or choose to have a simple Home. Blocks can be moved up or down on Home, and gamers can change this on-the-fly as their habits change.

Q: What are content blocks? How do I add content blocks?

A: On the new Home page, content – everything from Friends, to Clubs, to games – is organized in Blocks that can be added, removed, or moved around at any time. For example, adding a game Block to your Home screen may pull in an Activity Feed post from the game’s developer, show you when your friends are playing that game online, suggest the next Achievement for you to pursue and provide a quick shortcut to the Game Hub for that title. To add a content block to Home, select a game or friend; press the Menu button; and select “Add to Home.” Blocks can be moved by hitting “Y,” or removed by hitting “X.”

Q: Will these new UI changes also be reflected on Xbox One X when it releases this fall?

A: Yes, the new UI will be available on the Xbox One family of devices, including Xbox One X when it releases later this year.

Q: Will these new UI changes also be reflected on Xbox 360?

A: This new dashboard update will be available across the Xbox One family of devices only.

Q: Will you have a 4K dashboard on Xbox One X?

A: No. We made the decision to use the extra memory in Xbox One X for games to make the most immersive gaming experience.

The all new Guide

We redesigned Xbox One Guide in this update to get you to the content you care about most, quicker, so you never miss out on a moment of gaming. It’s now easier and faster than ever to switch back and forth between apps in the Guide or get back to Home. You’ll also notice we’ve added an all-new tab layout, which enables you to easily navigate and jump to various Guide features that are of most interest to you using the left thumbstick, d-pad or bumpers on your controller. Features such as Home and recent, Broadcast & capture, Sign-in, Achievements, Multiplayer, People, Messages and System will each have their own tab within the new Guide.

Q: Will I be able to revert to the previous Guide design?
A:The new Guide design will release broadly within the Xbox community to all consoles across the Xbox One family of devices.

Q: What are tabs?
A:The new tab layout within the Guide enables you to find content quicker via flyouts that offer more space and better organization of the content you care about most. For example, features such as Home and recent, Broadcast & capture, Sign-in, Achievements, Multiplayer, People, Messages and System will each have their own tab within the new Guide.

Q: Will I be able to customize or remove tabs? What kinds of content can I add to a tab?
A:For this initial release, fans won’t be able to customize content in the Guide. However, other aspects such as your Home will be completely customizable based on your interests with all-new content blocks.

Broadcast and GameDVR Capture

The Broadcast & capture tab has been given an update as well. With new Broadcast and GameDVR controls, in addition to quicker access to captured content, right from the dashboard!

Q: What updates have been made to the Broadcast & capture tab?

A: Mixer broadcast previews will now play directly in the Broadcast & capture tab on the dashboard. Users will also see when their friends are broadcasting, as well as receive broadcast recommendations based on the games they play.

Q:  Will I be able to save my screenshots and recorded gameplay clips to an external drive? Are there any restrictions?

A:    You can now save gameplay clips and screenshots directly to any connected external drive from your Xbox One console, allowing you to record longer gameplay clips and save more in-game moments. However, externally saved screenshots and recorded gameplay clips cannot be later uploaded to Xbox Live or edited in Upload Studio with this update. In addition, screenshots and gameplay clips originally saved on your Xbox One cannot be transferred later to an external drive.

Q:  How do I capture and save my screenshots and recorded content to an external drive?

A:   To capture gaming content to an external drive, start by visiting the Storage page in Settings. From the Storage page, designate your external drive as your capture location. Once your external drive is set as your capture location, all gameplay clips and screenshots will be saved directly to your designated external drive.

Q:  What quality of screenshots and game clips can I capture/share with this update? Will I be able to choose which quality to capture in?

A:   With this update, you can now choose to capture game clips in up to 4K/HDR, 4K/SDR, 1080/SDR (default) and 720/SDR on the Xbox One X this fall. Screenshots will be captured in the best quality output based on your TV and video game by default. We’re also now enabling you to record content directly to an external drive.

Q: Will GameDVR be in 4K? What about screen shots?

A: With Xbox One X, games will be able to use GameDVR to record video clips and capture screenshots in up to 4K 60 HDR. However, livestreaming and sharing will be at 1080p.

Community Tab

The new Community layout enables gamers to see more of the content they love most with a full-screen post viewer that immerses you in your feed and lets you quickly see content at a glance. The new layout also makes it easier than ever to see what’s going on with your Friends and Clubs. We’ve made improvements to Club discovery so you can quickly display which Clubs you’re already a part of and easily discover new Clubs to join.

The new full-screen post viewer will enable gamers to view screenshots and clips from their Community Feed in an immersive, full-screen view. This will enable friends to collectively experience and share in-game moments with one another.

Arena on Xbox Live

The Arena on Xbox Live experience is better than ever with improved tournament discoverability, new Guide accessibility and several new titles coming to its roster in the next few months, including: “World of Tanks” and “Injustice 2.” With the release of our latest update, fans can now create and participate in gamer-created tournaments with "Killer Instinct." In the coming weeks, new titles such as “World of Tanks” and “Injustice 2” will support Arena on Xbox Live.

Q: What does improved discoverability entail?

A: Improved tournament discoverability helps gamers find new tournaments to join, while improved Club discovery helps Arena users discover new Clubs to join or find Clubs they’ve already joined.

Xbox One S and HDR

Hey all,

I've searched around the subreddit and google and haven't been able to find a satisfying answer. Just recently upgraded to a 43 inch Sony Bravia X720E 4K and was super stoked to use it with my One S.

That being said, I've noticed that when I launch Netflix and HDR compatible games, the screen dims a lot when it switches to HDR mode.

I've read in different threads that supposedly we should be watching HDR in a pitch black room and to boost the backlight etc. but when I use the native YouTube and Netflix apps on the TV, no issues at all and it is crisp af. (Planet Earth 2 ftw). No issues either when I plug in a PS4.

I've set my HDMI output to enhanced and all the 4K / HDR options are ticked off in the advanced settings.

Thanks ahead of time for any insight you can provide!

Stuff looks fuzzy on my new 4k HDR TV. What's wrong?

I bought this new TV, it's an upgrade to my 720p T.V.

Things look fuzzy on it, like I can't view them at their full graphics potential. For instance Netflix is streaming in 480p instead of 1080p even though I told it to use high graphics, and games on my Xbox that say they are 1080p graphics look shitty. Everything is looking worse than my 720p television. Yes stuff is hooked up to an HDMI cable.

What could be going on? It's a Vizio M series.

How would my specs compare to these system requirements?

Right now, I'm really looking forward to getting Sonic Forces. I was thinking about getting it for the PC, but then I saw the system requirements, which seem pretty demanding.

I only have a Pentium G4560 processor, a GTX 1050 graphics card, and 8 GB of DDR4-2133 RAM. I looked up the benchmarks, and it seems like the GTX 1050 is slightly better, but the processor kinda falls behind in the multi-core performance. Plus, I kinda met the bare minimum RAM requirements (which I'm not sure will use all of it, but it does say 8 GB minimum).

I should also mention that Sonic Forces is also getting a 4K upgrade specifically for the Xbox One X, and if I had to guess, then those system requirements would be to play the game at 4K on a PC, assuming they also allow that one to scale as well. However, I'm only planning on playing it at 1080p 60 FPS, which I don't know how demanding that in itself would be.

I also know that this particular game is aiming to be at 60 FPS on the Xbox One (non-X), but I don't know the resolution, whether it's 720p or 1080p. If it's only 720p, then I'm worried that I'll only be able to play the game at 720p on my PC, which I'm not exactly sure how it compares to an Xbox One in the first place.

Told I Can't Upgrade, Need to Start Over

Last Friday, I had a break in. The guy took my PS4, Xbox One, and all my games/accessories, totaling about $1600 in physical items and $2200 if you include digital purchases across both systems. As an avid Kingdom Hearts fan, I really only miss the PS4 but I decided that, for the time being, I'd rather invest in improving my PC. My insurance company will drop my policy if I file the claim so my budget is basically the few hundred dollars the GoFundMe my coworkers started for me may raise, or wait until tax return time.

I can currently play most games just fine, but an ENB for Skyrim tanks my FPS pretty hard. This PC was built for me about two years ago after my MacBook at the time had called it quits, so I wasn't exactly 'in the market' and was working within a budget of about $1000 USD. I went to my local MicroCenter and they helped me pick out the parts and opt for components that would allow me to upgrade in the future. The future has come, I returned to MicroCenter, and was told I might be able to keep the case and that was about it - I would be looking at new everything, down to the power supply. I didn't have them print out the list there just because it wasn't a priority but I went poking through my computer I believe I have a list of my current components:

Userbenchmark PC Build Comparison

Baseline Price
CPU Intel Pentium G3258 $65
GPU Nvidia GTX 750 $120
HDD WD Blue 1TB (2015) $46
RAM Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1600 C9 2x4GB $60
MBD MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition (MS-7922) $127
$418
BENCH Game 22%, Desk 44%, Work 24%

At this point, I'm a bit put off by MicroCenter telling me I'd be looking at a total rebuild. If that is the case, I'll do it, but I was hoping to do an upgrade here, upgrade there; not dump the entirety of my tax return into one purchase.

What do I use my PC for? you ask; good question. Mostly small games like League, Banished, City Skylines... and this is because I just can't handle Skyrim the way I'd like to. Too many mods have to lead me to get ~25FPS and... that is unacceptable. I would like to move to a dual monitor set up and possibly look into streaming (so long as I can play in 1080 and stream to at least 720 with ease). Aside from that, I do a fair amount of work with Audition and Premiere and will be doing more audio/video editing in the near future, but I have personally not run into any major issues when it comes to processing time and all that with my current set up. I'd like to just shift all my major game purchases to PC. I'm not sure what sort of price increase I'd be looking at if I wanted 4k compatibility, especially since that would mean going from possibly two <$150 monitors to 2 >$400 monitors (based on 5 minutes of research).

Any advice the people of Buildmeapc have is appreciated. Admittedly, when it comes to the innards of computers... I'm pretty daft. I just know how to make them do what I want once their put together.

Nearly finalized budget build

Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I will be using this to run games at higher quality settings, but I don't necessarily need to be on Ultra. I'd like games like XCOM 2, Planet Coaster, and possibly Star Wars Battlefront 2 to look nice. Also, I'm interested in giving 3D modeling in Blender a try and I occasionally use Photoshop and Illustrator. I would like to have a dual monitor setup.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080P at a minimum with at least 60fps would be nice. I'm primarily an Xbox One player as well as a few games on my laptop and both of the resolutions for those are 720P. Obviously if I can get higher, that would be great.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$1000 is my budget, but it's not really a fixed number and will likely end up spending more since I don't have any peripherals.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

U.S.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have never built a PC before, but I have been doing a bunch of research over the past couple months so I feel like I have a build that will suit my needs, but I have a few things that I'd like to run by you guys here.

So, first and foremost, I already have the two sticks of RAM, the PSU, and the case for this build since I got all of those on sale a little bit ago.

With regards to the RAM being 2400 MHz and Ryzen benefiting from higher RAM speeds; I've done my research and decided that I'd likely only get a few extra frames here and there and the price I got for it far outweighed any benefit of getting faster RAM for a much higher cost in my opinion.

For the CPU, I have a couple things in mind. First off, I waited for the Coffee Lake release and while something like the i3-8100 or the i5-8400 would offer better performance, the expensive motherboards that I likely wouldn't even fully utilize kind of spoil them for me. If you have something that you think may change my mind towards intel, please let me know since I can go either way. Also, I've seen similar builds to mine posted here with the Ryzen 3 1200 and I was wondering which CPU you think would better suit my needs. My understanding is that the 1300X costs about $20 more, but does get better performance. Oh, and I do not understand overclocking very well, so help on that front would be much appreciated.

Another thing I need help deciding on are monitors since I am not 100% sure what I should be expecting from this build. And since I will be running two monitors, should I have two identical ones or one higher quality one for gaming with the secondary one being more generic. Currently I have my eye on this monitor, but I don't know what I should be looking for.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I like to be thorough. Any advice and opinions would be much appreciated and if I think of anything else, I'll post it in a comment.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

Marseille mCable Gaming/Gamer vs. Cinema Edition Write up + Pictures

I recently bought both the gaming and cinema editions of the Marseille mCable, their respective pages are here and here. I apologize ahead of time for the image quality, they are PNGs on a registered imgur to avoid lossy compression, but I do not have a dedicated hardware capture device so they were taken with a 6S plus.

Feel free to ask any questions about either and I will do my best to answer them (I do not yet own a 4K panel, so I won't really be able to answer questions involving them).

Note: both cables provide different forms of color processing, these are noticeable in Bloodborne, but the color differences in RDR are largely due to the changing weather, so focus on the color changes in BB.

I chose to use Bloodborne as an example game as anyone who has played it knows how terrible the image quality was due to excessive chromatic aberration and a complete lack of anti-aliasing. All of these will be set at 1080p display resolution since if you set it to 720p the ps4 just supersamples the image as the internal rendering resolution is locked at 1080p regardless of output resolution.

This is what BB normally looks like: Imgur

Clearly, there is a lot of aliasing on everything and the CA gets worse the farther things are from the center of the screen

This is what just the gaming edition looks like: Imgur

We can see really good anti aliasing, but there is a noticeable texture blurring which gives them a kind of oil-paint look. Also notice that the chromatic aberration has been substantially reduced, giving a much cleaner and clearer image

Here is the cinema edition: Imgur

Oddly enough, the cinema edition which is supposed to be aimed at TV and films has anti-aliasing, though not as strong or as good at edge catching as the gaming edition. CA is slightly reduced. The cinema edition has a particularly strong sharpening filter and does not have the oil-paint effect the gaming edition has. It introduced noticeable halos due to the sharpening, but I am honestly starting to prefer this version. Testing in 60fps games like Nioh it has no problem handling 60fps content.

Finally, this is what you get if you combine the gaming edition plus the extra sharpening and image processing of the cinema edition: Imgur

Honestly I do not know what to make of this one yet, it seems like overkill and doesn't really give much return for the $240+ you would spend on the cables (they are both $120).

Here are some scaling results with RDR which uses 2xmsaa and a 1280x720 rendering resolution. I set the X1S at 720p output resolution to avoid using the built in scaler by the console.

First is the base game being upscaled to 1080p using the better than average scaler in my BenQ XL2430T. Imgur

Even with the 2xMSAA the game uses it just looks awful, the game looks quite good being scaled 1:1 though, so a lot of clarity is being lost trying to play at 1080p sadly

This is the game being upscaled using the built in scaler in the Xbox One S: Imgur

The scaler in the X1S gives a slightly sharper image than the XL2430T, but it still looks pretty bad, not much else to say here.

Here is the game being upscaled using the gaming edition: Imgur

Obviously a lot better than either the built in scaler or the one you are going to get in a monitor, with additional anti-aliasing on top of that. Honestly, the game looks pretty decent but as you can see the results are pretty blurry. Using a TV you may be able to counteract this by using additional sharpening.

This is what the cinema edition looks like for comparison: Imgur

Very similar results to the gaming edition, but a bit sharper due to the additional sharpening the cinema edition provides. The anti-aliasing isn't quite as good, but if you are only interested in upscaling last-gen titles, this may be the better option you are not a fan of the oil-paint effect the gaming edition introduces.

Finally, this is what happens if you use the gaming edition for upscaling then the cinema edition to sharpen and clean up that 1080p signal coming out of it: Imgur

Obviously the sharpest results here, but there can be subtle visual artifacts here and there on small details due to the doubling up of image processing.

Ultimately, it is kind of mixed bag--neither is perfect but they both give much better results than without. Buying decision should depend on what you would rather have: excellent anti-aliasing plus blur or okay anti-aliasing without. I have tested how the cables work with different forms of AA and can confirm they have no problem being used on top of FXAA, which a lot of games use (it actually cleans up the missed edges and sub-pixel artifacts caused by this form), temporal AA which is becoming increasingly popular, MSAA which is sometimes used by older games as post-process methods didn't exist yet, and neither have any problem being used with games that have dynamic rendering resolutions, such as Nioh which can drop to below 720P on action mode on a base PS4. I didn't see any issues being used on games which have film grain either, such as The Order 1886.

X3 questions

First off sorry to make another thread i just don't want this not to be seen.

First off I'm very confused by these dip switches. The only way the xbox boots at all is with the first one on and the rest off. Otherwise it hangs at a black screen. Bios 3294 boots to the x3 live config in switch one on. Do I need to worry about any of this? Just every guide says use on on off off. If I do that nothing happens. No other combinations do anything either

Second high definition will not work at all no matter what I do or where I enable the settings. X3 live is set to enable 720p, as is xbmc, and original is dash. They all stay that way on reboot but it still doesn't display in hd. Looks terrible.

3rd when my xbox is booting shortly before the xecuter rox my box pops up the screen freezes and jitters then continues. It makes a horrible noise but then seems to start fine. All apps and games seem to work just no hd.

This is a 1.0 xbox. Didn't notice the jittering with the screen when starting until after I removed the clock capacitor. Also I am using a 500gb hard drive from a different hard modded xbox that was using an x2 bios. Is that a problem.

For hd do I need to use an hd pack or something? I have an arsenal xbox hd pack that came with this but not component cables to plug into it to test it. I just am using regular xbox component cables plugged into the back of the xbox directly.

Best way to play RDR in 2017?

I haven't played the game in years, and the urge to give it a spin is getting overwhelming after the trailers for RDRII were released.

Thing is, I used to play on the Xbox 360 on an old 720p HDTV. What's the optimal setup these days? Xbox One X? What system runs the game the smoothest? Would 4K and HDR make it a better experience? I'm usually a PC gamer, but I might just purchase or rent a console solely for RDR.

Having trouble optimizing OBS with my pc.

Hey guys! I'm fairly new to streaming, been in it for about a month now. I used to stream through twitch via the app on Xbox One and would just use my headset for audio, but I decided to go ahead and get serious and upgrade my setup. I just got my logitech c920, a cheap mic, as well as an elgato HD 60S. The idea was to play through the xbox one and using my pc stream through twitch, capturing the footage via capture card, and it's worked on that end. The problem is that the stream is a bit laggy/slow and I'm trying to optimize my settings in OBS so I can get the best stream possible for my setup. Here is my setup. AMD A12-9720P processor, 8GB ram, 12 compute cores 4C+8G, 2.7GHz, Radeon R7 graphics card. I get 56 ms of ping, 93 Mbps download, 12 Mbps upload. My OBS settings were at 2000 bitrate, x264 encoder, veryfast, 30FPS, 720P base and output resolution, downscale filter is set to bicubic. If you need more info from me please let me know, I'm really trying to optimize my pc for OBS. Again keep in mind im playing all the games via the xbox one, the pc is just running OBS and twitch chat in the background, that is all I run while i stream.

Weird Zoom issue. Need help!

I played xbox about an hour or two ago. Took a break and watched some tv. I turn my xbox back on and it's randomly zoomed in as much as it can be. I didn't have the magnifier on (although I've tried using it to zoom out and it won't go past where it was zoomed in). I've never had this issue before and the looking up I've done hasnt helped in the least. I've had the same tv for over a month now (having recently upgraded to a TCL 4k tv and having the one s for several months) so its not a setting up issue. I've even tried switching out the HDMI cable as I heard that might be an issue.

Any suggestions? Would be really appreciated.

Picture of issue: https://i.imgur.com/EhA9XdQ.jpg

EDIT:I set the screen res back to 720p and it works fine now but when i change to 4k its fucked. So whats the fix for that?

Star wars: a hot messy beta experience

In the era of full HD, QHD, UHD 4k visuals it really does take some balls to serve up this beta to Xbox One. It runs horribly and I CAN'T SEE. I'm sure the gunplay is fantastic but the experience is hindered by a slow blurry mess running at 720p with visible scanlines. This is not the battlefront we were promised and I can't believe this version passes as a $60 AAA game.

Avoid the Xbox version at all costs it is not worth your time

PS4 Pro not 1080p even though my settings are all properly adjusted.

So I have a pro that is connected to a 24" inch 1080p TV and when the pro is in use, the screen is clearly pixelated and definitely not 1080p, all the settings have been adjusted like the screen area, the resolution, hdcp settings, rgb settings, even all the settings for the tv have been adjusted. I had the tv plugged into an Xbox One earlier that day and it was clearly 1080p. I also plugged the ps4 into an older monitor that only has 720p and it looks better than the 1080p tv. Anyone have a clue why I could be having this problem?

Xbox One X Justification

(Without getting into a debate) I’m just wondering what the big hype is over the Xbox One X. Sure, it allows you to play on a 4K TV with less FPS drops etc. But for someone who is perfectly content with playing on an Xbox One S on a 43” TV in 1080p, what could possibly persuade such a casual player into “upgrading”? I use to be huge into Siege. Made it to Plat I during Operation Health, and I did all of my “competitive” gaming (Halo 3, Gears of War, CoD, Siege) in 720p - 1080p just fine lol. Since then, I’ve stopped playing such competitive games and prefer a more casual multiplayer experience or single player. Is it so hyped purely because it is the “hot new” item? Surely, not everyone is gaming on a $8000 4K TV (In aware there are cheaper models). I’ll be able to play the exact same games as someone on an X and the 9th generation of consoles is most likely still 5 or more years away. I’m now 24 and don’t have the time to pay attention to acquiring all the shiny new toys like I did when I was in my teens. I just don’t understand lol.

Thanks in advance!

In the market for a new TV, any suggestions?

I want to get the most out of my Xbox One for the price I can afford . I currently have an old Vizio that displays 720p.

Looking for an affordable 4k TV, even better if it has HDR. By affordable I mean under a grand.

This TV will be no bigger than 50 inches, and no smaller than 45 inches.

I have been wondering for weeks about the resolution on a regular Xbox One for this game. I am sitting at work and see that a bunch of people are already playing. Can someone PLEASE shed some light on this for me? Is it 720p, 900p, 1080p?

Thanks in advance kind stranger!

Considering buying an xbox one x, but have a question about the xbox one dashboard

Hey all! I'm considering buying an xbox one x when it comes out, but I was hoping those that have the xbox one could answer a question for me. I used to own a 360, and it was cool until they changed the dashboard from this to this as I have a personal issue with the way that they were pushing ads to owners of systems and minimizing space for games.

Question: Have they moved away from this practice of forced ads?

Trip Report - A Whole Bottle of Delsym, a Trip into Different Realities

10/2/17

Previous experience: Have done numerous 2nd plat trips before, using mainly Delsym, but last time had been Hbr.

Preparations: Made sure I had a couple days off, before I would dose. Had DPH in case if any side effects would happen. Been three weeks since my last trip, of 300 hbr.

Plateau: ?

7:30 to 8 PM – Ate some Mac and Cheese, as well as a salad. Something moderate to be in my stomach. :)

10 PM – Was talking to my other fellow tripper on FB. We decided to trip together that night. Around this time, since recommended, took 50mg DPH. Been listening to music earlier, continuing to do so. All through the night I was.

10:30 PM – Dosing time! A little anxious as it would be a step up from a previous trip of 720mg poli, so… Did shots all the way up to taking 888mg poli. Officially, delsym tastes weird af to me now. Decided to relax on my bed, playing some video games as I waited for my dose to kick in.

11:00 – Felt relaxed, thinking it might have been the DPH from earlier.

11:30 – Strange. Visual weirdness was kicking in a bit for me. Decided to stop playing for a bit, and sit back. Hmmm, nothing too major.

11:35 ish – Back to gaming. Tho, the feeling of relaxation, and eyes feeling heavy persisted from a couple of minutes ago.

12 AM – It’s gonna be hitting soon, but alas… nothing too much other than what I was experiencing. Odd. Getting increasingly bad in my game.

12:30 – Decide to look around a bit while still on my Xbox, in between matches. Chair greatly morphed as I stared at it, looked back at the screen, some shit moved around. It’s coming finally, even if it took longer than usual… hm. Decide to finally turn off the TV screen, tho I left on my xbox and controller, tho I turned it off at some point later.

12:33 – Lay down on my bed? Or I sat, leaning against the headboard. Haven’t had an urge to shit yet, I figure its due to the DPH. Good. I’ll check myself later, if I can. Lights have been off.

12:45 to 2? – Patterns, strings of light were forming before my eyes. The lights from outside my window and my xbox things displaced. I was semi-surprised, but welcomed the new-ish feeling of strong disassociation coming on. I didn’t want to move—as the music blasted into my ears from my headphones, I get some stray thoughts about ‘not minding if I die’. ‘Am I going to die?’ I didn’t freak out—next thing I knew, I saw a bunch of images, but mainly that’s when a black-ish cylinder hole stood out to me and I moved through it.

Next thing I saw, was pure blackness. I didn’t come to until around 2, or a bit after. I was still out of it, but… I felt vastly 2-D. Flat. Cramped into a shape or something.

Was confused about being in my room, ‘this is where I am?’ sort of deal.

2:00 to 4:00 – Was able to talk a bit on the DXM discord, times were far in between. I seemed out of it when talking (was able to follow conversations pretty okay it seemed, looking back) tho my spelling seemed pretty okay, tho that was prolly due to the autocorrect. Phone felt slanted as I tried to type. There was even some points where the whole ‘2-D’ sensation came back, as well told to others on there.

Social inbition was kinda low, as I ended up telling my ‘weed only’ buddy on FB that I was doing cough syrup. Luckily he didn’t seem judgmental about it.

At some point, the 2-D feeling switched out and I would feel what was described as ‘extra 3-D right now.’ Particularly when the couple times I wanted to go to the bathroom to check myself, since I felt a fart come out. Nothing. My legs felt like absolutely jelly when going out of my room and right to the bathroom—was vastly confused where everything was—only saw patterns and faces and such in front of me in the dark. I’d have to switch on my phone for its light to guide me safely. Would have to kinda grab onto the wall or edges to make sure I didn’t fall, it felt so much like I would.

Jumping in and out of realities seemed to be a complete norm, continuing from before, due to shutting my eyes and getting thrown into worlds due to music changing every so often. Saw many things dancing in front of me, even some game related like visuals, traveling along a technologically advanced hallway like seen in the games. So much to see.

Being lost in the DXM experience 7/8 of the time.

4:00 to 5:00 – Effects continued just as strong.

6:00 ish – was sobering up a tiny bit, but barely. Disassocation was still strong. Images still came in, as I shifted back into the different universes, after noticing my mom’s boyfriend had woken up and was showering.

7:00 or 7:24 AM – Finally feel back down to earth, but disassociation was still somewhat there. Absolutely mind-blowing experience—it was light outside, and I could hear my mom talking from another room inside of her house. I get settled down into bed and can call it night, about time lol.

11/10.

Afterglow: I didn’t wake up until 5:00 – 5:30 PM the next day. Some visual weirdness and some disassociation decided to come back for an hour or so, in and out. Legs felt a bit shaky, so I decided to take it easy. Appeared sober when I was talking my mom’s boyfriend and later, my mom herself.

The next day was a lot better, body felt more calm, as of today. When I went outside, it somehow felt new, or different. Slight visual weirdness persisting yet, but ahh… it’d go away.
