I dont work for a game site or company. I just like video games and rocket league especially. Played close to 4 hours gold 3 in doubles (xbox platinum 1)
"I'm one with the ball, the ball is with me" -Ancient Rocket Ball proverb
Pros:
- Everything is in the game! Game modes, downloadable training exercises, local coop, trading items between other switch players etx etc
-two player coop on handheld is actually pretty decent. Seems to run just as well as single player handheld and if you both squish together you can see decently well
-online has worked great so far. No disconnects on home wifi so far, and nearly all games have been good connections
-touch keypad works so end game chats can be fun!
-playing xbox and pc players has been a blast so far and im able to compete just as well as i can on xbox
-might be a coincidence but ive had much better luck with 50/50s on switch than i do on xbox. For example, i have been very successful doing quick hops in front of the ball to stuff the other team from clearing. Might be me adjusting to a new platform or maybe less input lag than xbox?
-ball has an outline when far away to compensate for low resolution in handheld, this helps me know when the ball is going from far to close. On xbox it is sometimes hard to tell. Maybe they will implement a much better version of this on the other platforms as well!
Cons:
-very low resolution at times. To help out with this, the ball has a outer glow to it when really far, kind of like the outlines in characters used in 3ds smash bros
-joy cons are not recommended for play. I found myself turning mid jump most times i attempted to ariel
-cant use the switch video capture mid game but you can save replays of full matches through rocket league itself
-i havent partied up but i assume there is no voice chat capable
-some crates arent accessible anymore yet accessories for those retired crate items are in the current crates
-no analogue triggers is a bit strange but hasnt been that much of a problem for me. My controls are really weird though. On switch they are (ZR - gas, X - boost, A - jump, Y - reverse, R - handbreak/air roll, ZL - ball cam must be held) to me this is easist to hit boost and jump at the same time for quicker ariels.
-I now have way too many chances to play rocket league throughout my day and im not getting anything else done!
So to sum up, it is a different experience and feels mobile because everything is scaled back visually, it looks terrible compared to splatoon or mario. But i think updates will be coming to mend it at least a little. Definitely get a pro controller if you hope to be competitive at all. Im a little dissapointed as i thought it would run at 720p 60fps handheld with just low res textures and low poly count but instead it is just really low res overall and lots of aliasing, jaggies.
Most importantly, if you play rocket league a lot already and get this version, remember to be nice to new players by encouraging them and not just destroying them each game as you level/rank up. I hope the switch rocket league community grows and grows!
