Speaker or Receiver Upgrad

Hey guys -

so I have recently renovated my basement and I'm in the middle of looking at my home theater system. I currently have a 15+ year hold Kenwood AR/VR series HITB that I am using and I'm trying to figure out if I should upgrade the speakers or the AVR first - I dont really have budget to do both. My main issue is that dialogue almost exclusively comes through my center channel and I find it sounds muddled. My primary source of content is Netflix, my cable provider's Apple V app (Bell Fibe), and my Xbox 360. A good amount of the content is DD5.1, but definitely some stereo stuff in there as well that my AVR is upmixing. I think :)

Right now, I have about $400 CAD to spend on either speakers or an AVR. What would you guys recommend? For an AVR, I've noticed what I think are good sales on units like the Denon AVR-S720W or and some similar from Marantz.

For speakers, because of the renovations, I already replaced my rears w/ in-ceilings that I am pretty happy with and my sub is decent - so I am more concerned w/ the front 3. I would love to get the Kef T-series.. just because they would look super slick next to my projector screen - but they are outside my budget.

PS - clearly, I am no audiophile and I also have no intention of doing Atmos/7.x. Sticking w/ 5.1 as the most I will get.

Thanks!!
