xbox one won't accept 5.1???

I don't really know exactly what is going on, but I'll do my best to explain it.

I am using the following.

xbox one with kinect. yahama AV htr 3063 receiver (bit older, but works from what I can tell) rca 40 or 42 inch TV model:l42hd37yx11

had the tv and reciever for years and years and they have given me very little trouble, only blown a fuse in the tv once, got it replaced for about 75$ professionally, and it still works to this day. Slight swivel means i don't have to be directly in front of it, really like the tv model. AV receiver i wanted because i wanted to have a true 5.1 audio system and hdmi output since i had a 1080p tv (at least thats what it boasts proudly on the front of tv), asked for one for christmas, got a dvd player with 2 channel "5.1 audio" with RCA cables no hdmi port... you know the chinese pieces of garbage? yeah, returned that as fast as i could and bought this on sale.

It's worked on 360 for a long time properly outputting 5.1 audio, and i'm pretty sure it was doing it on the xbox one before all the updates. I'm positive that I've had this setup work fine before, but for some reason I cannot get it set up properly. I can listen to the unit cycle through all of the 6 audio channels in the internal testing......

If I go into my settings where it says audio on the xbox one, no matter how i change the settings, I can ONLY choose stereo uncompressed. even though 5.1 7.1 off and bitstream out are options it refuses to comply and reverts to stereo. (error code: 0x80bd0009). (If changed display to hdmi, then I can change to these options, HOWEVER, locks me in at 640x480 resolution)

I did some googling, and came to a post that suggested doing this: 1. On the Xbox controller press the Menu (3 lines) button go get the options page and then select Settings.

  1. Once in settings go to Display and Sound settings on the bottom left.

  2. When you are in the Display and sound settings the first thing you are going to want to change is the HDMI output from AUTO to HDMI. When you do this it will revert to a 640x480 video, change that back to 1080p.

  3. Next, change the HDMI compression to BITSTREAM instead of STEREO (UNCOMPRESSED).

  4. Once done with the HDMI compression go the Optical audio compression and change this to BITSTREAM as well.

  5. Finally, set the BITSTREAM format to DOLBY DIGITAL instead of DTS and you are done. The Xbox One will now transcode the DTS signal to a Dolby Digital 5.1

So, I start following the steps here, go into display instead of audio (still cannot fathom why audio issues have to do with display) and I tell it to use hdmi instead of auto, and what does it do, it turns it into 640x480 and does not allow me to change to another tv resolution!!!!!!! Come to think of it, it also won't allow me to change from 1080p to 720p when using auto detect. The color space on the same screen does the same thing and auto-reverts to the recommended option, and color depth only has 1 option However, it does change the 50hz 24hz and 3d options on so they are all able to be checked off.

Just for the sake of experimentation, when I keep it in HDMI instead of auto, it then allows me to set the audio to 5.1, however the 640x480 forced resolution issue still persists.

Googling something to the extent of "xbox one hdmi stuck 640x480" starts getting me results like some kid takes his tv to the living room and that tv is a 1080p, then he takes it back to his room, but his bedroom tv is crap and only does 720p, so he can't see whats being displayed and needs to reset it. Oh and its an xbox 360, not an xbox one, or the next thread i click on it's talking about an optical cable (something that i do not own and have not used.) Go direct to xbox website and it has like, 4 lines of text.

I really love the new technology that they are using these days, but then I have to go through all this junk and confusion to get it all figured out and it takes like 4 days to figure out i have to do one very specific thing and then it will work.

The xbox one IS supposed to be able to communicate with both my tv and reciever..... is it not??? I was under that impression.....

Anyway, failing all of that, where you are able to select the brand of reciever and tv you have, it finds and operates the reciever okay, but it seems to have trouble opening a menu on the tv. It wants a remote number or some crap, whatever the hell that is. Perhaps this has something to do with why I am unable to select higher resolution when running hdmi? Maybe the hdmi cord going from the xbox to receiver input has something to do with it.

I find this so infuriating that it takes so long to set up and then gets destroyed by the next update. Sorry that this has been so long winded and ranty.
