Hello everyone, I decided to make some post about battery improvement and ram management for S6. I know that we all see this kind of guide about how to improve the battery life. But I have some good news and my method is less. The good news that I am able to get nearly 6 SOT in my phone as my screenshot is shown. http://imgur.com/cbdumKS this is the max as I can to get nearly 6 SOT. http://imgur.com/0LRM6O5 . Now my average become 5h and 35m. My phone is SM-G920T (T-Mobile variant), 5.1.1, OF8 build. I am using Nova Launcher, Material Dark Theme, Stock T-Mobile ROM and no root. I moderately use my phone. Please be patient with my English, it is my second language. I am trying to make it clear as possible for everyone to understand.
Here the thing. I found that a few guide been stating to disable more than beyond, it just my opinion that it is too extreme like disabling NFC/S Beam. I don’t see the point in that since they don’t use any battery, it basically like a drop in the very large lake.
I will list the app that is disabled and active. So that way you guys can compare and see how you feel from there. My disabled list is really small. How do I discover this apps is that I used Running tab in App Manager to find what is really keeping some app active also along with Smart Manager and GSAM Battery Monitor.
Also, I get RAM Management improvement by disabling those apps. Now my phone is snappier (this is before T-Mobile release the battery improvement update). My apps stop reloading too often. Relay showing improvement with responsive and stop reloading the app every time I focus on it. I don’t experience any lag issue. Every app I open through the Recent List open just fine without showing their splash screen or restarted app something like that.
Disabled List:
- Chrome
- Drive
- Google+
- Hancom Office 2014
- Live Weather
- Milk
- Milk Video
- OneDrive
- OneNote
- Peel Smart Remote
- S Health
- T-Mobile Name ID
- T-Mobile TV
- Visual Voicemail
Apps that I never disabled List:
- Amazon
- ANT Radio Service
- ANT+ Plugins Service
- Galaxy Apps
- Lookout
- S Beam/NFC
- Skype
- Uber
Chrome – Other browser of your choice. I disabled Chrome because there is seem an issue with Chrome causing problem with the RAM. So I used stock Browser with Webview installed and Firefox. Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox – File Manager that have support for cloud storage. I don’t have Dropbox in the disabled list because it didn’t came with it. But I did uninstalled it since it been syncing in the background, showing up in the running tab in App Manager. For this, I use Solid Explorer and QuickPics to manage those Cloud storage. Facebook – this is very common issue among people who always complaining about battery drain while they didn’t realize that Facebook is the common bad app that would do this. I use Tinfoil for Facebook and Facebook Messenger with location reporting disabled. You can use FriendCastaer if you don’t like Tinfoil for Facebook. Google+ - The reasoning to disable this one is that I found one piece of information somewhere in the sea of Reddit that app tend to hog the RAM than it should. So disabling Google+ have no effect on the phone or the service. If I need to use Google+, Firefox will do for me. Hancom Office 2014 – I have no clue if this have an effect on the phone. I just disabled it because I never use it at all. Instagram – I never used this but I imagined why it can be an issue with battery since it sync in the background with notification. I disabled it because I don’t use it at all. Live Weather (Yahoo) – I disabled this because I am not sure what app is using this. After I disabled it and found that Weather is still working like the lockscreen and Google Now. So I just turn it off because it showing up in the running tab. I wonder what is the point to have this app if no other app or system app is using it at all? Milk/Milk Video – Again… I never used them at all. So off to Disabled list OneNote – It have an issue with syncing on my phone. With S5, G3 and S6, it just problem with syncing the notes, so I believe it just best to keep it disabled. Peel Smart Remote – It so persistence in the running tab. It kept loading in the running tab even I don’t use it. So I just disabled it to free up some space in RAM. S Health – it run in the background even I force stop it. So I just disabled it to free up some RAM. T-Mobile related app – I never those them. Some of those app cost services. So Basically I don’t need them and I just disabled them. Whatsapp – I disabled it since I never use it at all. I suggest Disa since Disa don’t really cause any battery drainage issue for me.
One thing I want to clarify,** T-Mobile My Account** cannot be disabled at all. It is a system app in S6. I don’t know why T-Mobile think it is a good idea to keep it as system app. It just cannot be disabled through normal means. I seen reports that My Account can be disabled. In my phone, I can’t disable it. Entirely possible the update is add to prevent any disabling it? Also I keep Galaxy App just the way it is because I tend to take picture and I want to keep camera mode updated as it is. Also it didn't hog my battery. Running tab rarely show Galaxy App running at all. GSBM reported that it use 0.1% of the full battery.
I have seen guides that suggest to disable Lookout. My opinion, I advise against it. I just kept the antivirus, browser security protection and backup disabled. I have Missing Device, Signal Flare, Theft Alert enabled. It work very well for me. Lookout only use 0.7% of my total battery. That is just so tiny and what is the point to disable it. I have Android Device Manager and Samsung Account with location finder app enabled. There is reason behind this, it is more of if other phone finder app failed to find and there is other app that is a backup. There is reports that Android Device Manager having issue finding the phone. It works for me without any issue. But it couldn’t hurt to have two phone finder app working.
What setting I have it enabled is Location, NFC, Download Booster, WiFi (auto connect to open wifi disabled), Bluetooth and VoLTE. Based on my testing, they have no impact on the battery at all. I have the Wifi Scanning on, I allow it to keep it on while it is sleeping. Location is only active when the app have request it like Lookout, ADM, Samsung Phone Finder, Maps, Waze and etc. Yes, I do have VoLTE enabled. It have no impact on my battery at all.
One of the guide suggest to restart SystemUI. I never done it because my phone haven’t lag at all with the Disabled list. Do whatever float your boat. If you feel like you are lagging, then you can try that route and see how those.
The reason I am making this post because I am sad to see people making cheapshot against S6. And I found a way of improving thing without going too extreme like other guides have suggested. I felt those guide is doing too much. S6 is really a great phone, it is far better than my previous experience with S5. So I want to spread this out to everyone that there is other ways to get battery improvement without going too extreme. And I have average of 5h 35m of SOT for two weeks.
Please take guides with a grain of salt. Not all suggestion will be a huge improvement. I want to share this, preinstalled app is not the only thing that have effect on battery and RAM management. Keep a look out on other app that you have installed. I discovered a few apps that I installed cause a drain on my battery and causing issue with RAM. So removing those app really improve it a lot. One of the common issue is games, sometime some games can be a battery hog due to notifications and things. Also look into app that use location, data, syncing and whatever. They can make impact on the battery drain. Try adjusting the sync time with email like changing to 15 min or half hour. I seen friends that use every min syncing on email and that is not a battery friendly. So change that also. There is some app that like to notify you when you don’t need it like for example news app. Change the setting to not to notify you at all and only sync when you access the app. This should help reduce using some battery.
I hope all of you enjoy reading my post and I hope it made some improvement to your phone also. If you have any question or confused with my wording, please leave a comment, I will clarify as much as I can.
