I've tried a few brands and I've had inconsistent result with them. My TV had 3 HDMI inputs but I have satellite, PS3, XBox360, Nintendo Switch, BD player, 4K player, and my laptop I needed switch to avoid excessive plugging and unplugging.
4k player has its own port because I have yet to find a switch that actually worked. One of them my player reported problem with HDCP error and wouldn't play above 480. Other 2 switch I got no signal. That left 2 ports with the rest of my stuff.
Brand A my laptop and Switch didn't work at all, no signal on TV. I've tried various port combinations and different cables with no change in result.
Brand B, my laptop misidentified the TV as 720 and wouldn't go above that even though my laptop is 4k capable. Also PS3 and XBox didn't work at all
Brand C, laptop and XBox wouldn't work.
It seems so inconsistent, I guess the switch doesn't communicate very well with devices and TV to establish HDCP, set resolution, etc. Or maybe certain switches were blacklisted due to improper HDCP and potentially allowing people to make illegal recording?
It makes me want to reach out and strangle whoever wanted draconian security on HDMI for not allowing switches to play nice or requiring TV to have 27 HDMI inputs for someone who has everything. Beside people still can rip BDs without breaking HDMI, made illegal recording off streaming video, etc so security seems pointless. Remember Sony CD protection, how it bricked some smart CD players and iMacs, and 99 cents Sharpie defeated it?
Can anyone suggest a HDMI switch that will work even with finicky laptop (Windows 10) and supported 4k properly? Preferably one that doesn't cost more than a cheap 32" TV since I'd likely get a second TV for extra HDMI for game consoles if a good switch costs too much.
