Why does 1080p resolution look better than 720p on my 720p tv?

Tried researching this on my own to no avail. I have a SHARP TV from like 2017-2018. It's a 32'' inch 720p display. I remember reading this on the box and double checking it on Best Buy's website as well also confirming it. Later I also pulled the manufacturing code and it also confirmed that it is 720p as well. The thing is when I plug my computer up to it through HDMI I can see that 1080p resolution looks sharper. The same thing goes for my Nintendo Switch and my Xbox One S when I switch their resolutions between 720-1080p, 1080p looks sharper.

Why does it do this? Shouldn't 1080p look just the same as 720p since it is on a display that is only 720p? Is it possible that it's actually a 1080p tv and SHARP and Best Buy messed up the information/specs?
