Hi xCloud Community,
As a 30-something with a growing family, I'm finding my time to game on the couch using the big screen is dwindling and sought out to build my own Nintendo Switch style setup for both PS4 and Xbox streaming. After lots of research, I settled on the following Android Device and Controller -
- Android Device: Moto G Fast running Android 10
- Screen Resolution of Android Device (per CPU-Z): 720 x 1560, 319 DPI
- Android Controller: Razer Kishi (Xbox version)
Other details (in case they're relevant):
- Subscription Tier: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (converted from Gold)
- Local Console Type: Xbox One X (Gears 5 Edition for the win)
Apps being used:
-
Xbox Game Pass (the "green", non-beta version) - Using this for xCloud / Xbox Cloud Streaming https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamepass&hl=en_US&gl=US
-
Xbox beta - Using this for local remote play / streaming from my own Xbox One X https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.xboxone.smartglass.beta&hl=en_US&gl=US
Starting with xCloud first, while the Xbox Game Pass App is full screen, the games themselves seem to scale back to a 16:9 Aspect Ratio with black bars on either side -

While I understand the need to maintain a game's proper aspect ratio of 16:9 to preserve image quality, as you can see in these images, there's unfortunately plenty of wasted screen real estate, but since the black bars are placed consistently and evenly on either side of the screen, I don't mind it as much as I initially did.
Switching gears over to local Console Streaming from my Xbox One X, image quality is on par with xCloud except for two small issues:
- The black bars on either side of my phone (again, presumably to maintain a proper 16:9 Aspect Ratio) are weirdly off-center.
- All of the native Android UI elements remain visible which breaks immersion a bit. This isn't a problem when streaming via xCloud which properly hides these UI elements.
Included below is an example of what I'm talking about -

Perhaps this is a problem being triggered by something locally on my console? Should I be actively changing my Xbox One X resolution from 4K UHD down to 720p to match my Android Device's resolution?
Troubleshooting Attempted
-
Unlocked Bootloader and rooted the Moto G Fast, then proceeded to install Apps like Easy DPI Changer [Root] thinking that I could trick the Xbox apps into playing in full screen if I lowered my phone's resolution to a more proper 720p like 720 x 1280. Unfortunately, all this did was shrink the usable space on my screen down to the usual Black Bars seen when using the Xbox Apps, effectively giving me black bars all the time instead of just when I'm streaming games.
-
Searched in Developer options for a 16:9 option, none found.
-
Navigated to Settings > Display > Advanced Settings > Full Screen Apps to force certain Apps to use a full screen mode, appears to have no impact on either Xbox app.
Questions for everyone
-
Is my thinking correct about this being an "Aspect Ratio" problem above all else? E.g. Should I have shopped for a better Android device that adheres more closely to 16:9?
-
For anyone with a similar setup using a Razer Kishi Controller, can you confirm if your phone or tablet plays everything perfectly in full screen? If so, can you please share the Make/Model?
-
The 3rd-Party Application PSPlay for PS4 Remote Streaming allows for full screen via "Zoom" or "Stretched" options - perhaps there's a way to universally Stretch or Zoom my screen at the Android OS level since both Xbox Apps don't have any configurable options for this?
Any input and advice is greatly appreciated!
