God I hope this isn't a pinned subject or anything. Sorry if almost all of you know this stuff by now, I just wanted it said on Reddit.
I run a YouTube channel called ShiftyGaming (not a plug, I'm not even doing anything on it at the moment) and I've uploaded several pieces of in game footage that was completely recorded without a capture card, all done the back way, and if you need your Xbox recorded for any reason, here's how you can do it in two different ways.
1) Xbox DVR
This isn't my favorite method, and I really only do it for voice-overs that I will record later, dull the game sound, maybe add some Royalty free Dubstep. but you can use this to reccord walkthroughs, and I'll explain in a moment.
Say you need footage of you playing CoD or Halo or whatever game you're playing, and you want to get that footage off of your xbox and onto your computer for editing.
Simple, press the Xbox home button and select the Xbox DVR. It will allow you to record for up to 10 minutes, and if you remember it used to be only 5 minutes, 10 minutes is enough for a lets play episode!
Record your footage and stop if you want the reccording to stop or let it record 10 full minutes.
Then go to your "Manage Captures" menu, and make sure that the clip is uploading to /Xbox Live/.
Depending on your internet speed, your video will upload within a few minutes or an hour or so. Mine take between 30 minutes and an hour, but I'm running on 7.5 downloads and 1.5 uploads speeds so I'm not too whiny about it.
Go to the website called XboxDVR.com orGameClips.com, whichever you prefer, once your video is done uploading. I prefer XboxDVR, especially with the number of features added when you join as a member, but I have noticed that GameClips gets the links faster than the DVR site so that's probably your best choice.
Click on the download button, and your clip will begin to download.
The videos are usually in 720p at least, and are usually smaller in file size. For example I am downloading a 7 minute and 18 second video and it's only 229 Mb.
All you need to do from there is drag them into your Sony Vegas (or whatever you use) timeline and record a voiceover in Audacity.
Pretty simple, huh?
I think method 2 is better and even more simple
Method 2: [Prerequisites Windows 10 and your choice of screen recording software]
In Windows 10, if you press the start menu and look at your tiles, you should see the Xbox App if you haven't deleted it or something (it's always available in the store). Click on this, and sign in with your microsoft account.
Now, turn on your Xbone if it's not already on. When you have signed in, click on the connections tab on the bottom left (also explore the app if you actually use Xbox Live all the time, it's pretty useful) and connecct to your Xbox through this.
Once you do, find the "Stream" button and press it. This will launch a full screen stream of your Xbone to your PC. if your internet is strong enough (it should be, I record on very high quality settings for my streams and reccord them in 720p at the very least with no latency issues on around 7-10 mbps) you could in theory leave your Xbox on in another room and record through your PC or Laptop anywhere in the house. That way you don't annoy your roommates or Girl/boyfriend by recording two hours of Skyrim survival mode and taking up the whole living room.
Now you can go ahead and activate your screen capture software right now, and start recording the stream whenever you want. I usually size it down a bit and get my recordings through bandicam, but let me tell you why I recommend bandicam:
-You can of course record the screen, and you have so many options for quality/file size/customization, and you have the ability to record the game sound AND your microphone and on SEPARATE audio tracks (meaning you don't have to adjust your game sound in game to record, you can just lower the volume of that track in edditing)
This is how I do it, I know I'll probably buy some sort of capture card/HD PVR some day, but for now we're bootleggin it!
Cheers guys, I hope I sparked someones interest in gaming on YouTube!!
