Connection problems first person shooter online, could be in part due to my tinkering.

Hi,

so I downloaded a certain first person shooter using Steam on my desktop computer in my bedroom. I have a sort of modified Dell Optiplex 780. My computer connects to the internet via wifi to my TP Link Archer C9 Router.

I use a TP-Link N900 Wireless to connect my desktop to the router.

Recently i was playing and i noticed I often had an in-game ping of about 80 to 100ms, whereas some of my opponents had less than 10ms. So I accessed the TP router menu and tried to improve my connection. I also changed some of the game settings like 'max ping' and 'max bandwidth game sends you.'

However I didn't have any luck and I put all the settings back to default now however when I play my ping seems to go very high to like 300 or more. Its fluctuates a lot going from around 60ms to 400ms.

The router is on the other side of the house. And i get 3 out of 5 bars from my room however I have played on Xbox live previously and this hasn't been a problem and I believe even the router was a weaker model then.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'd prefer to get my connection back to what it was. Or even improve it if I could.

My internet connection is pretty great otherwise. I can watch youtube clips in 720p and 1080p without too much wait. No wait at all on anything less. The only thing it can't seem to do is play the first person shooter in real time.
