Some of you might remember my dismay regarding OG Xbox emulation.
As it happens, a Patreon was recently set up and I was so ecstatic that I immediatly sent a fistful of denariis their way. Sadly, they seem positively awful at self-promotion and I fear the lack of enthusiasm will make them believe their work is fruitless and no one cares.
People frequently prophesize/joke that the support for Xenia will skyrocket once they release a functional Halo 3 video, the same way Cemu got an absolutely massive popularity surge from Breath of the Wild.
So I'm wondering: which Xbox game would provide that kind of electroshock?
I mostly care about local coop and my interest lies in very traditional games that just happen to be playable in coop (Dark Alliance, Conflict, Ghost Recon 2, Halo, etc). I expect most people to come up with much better and relevant suggestions:
-
Conker Bad Fur Day
-
Jet Set Radio Future
The broken video already seemed to get a lot of people interested, imagine a clean 1080/60 demo.
- Shenmue 2
English voices + Xbox QTE prompts. You can even expect purists to come up with a way to export the Dreamcast voices to an Xbox version.
-
Otogi Myth of Demons
-
Otogi 2 Immortal Warriors
-
Yager
-
Crimson Skies High Road to Revenge
-
Galleon
This has got to be one of the rarest Xbox exclusives.
-
Halo Combat Evolved
-
Halo 2
I would be an idiot if I did not mention them. While they have been ported, re-released and remastered multiple times, split-screen coop and native controller support on PC could be an earthquake in the Halo community.
-
Kingdom under Fire The Crusaders
-
Kingdom under Fire Heroes
It is often compared to Dynasty Warriors although I think it is rather the Warriors series that should be called the poor man's KuF.
- Panzer Dragoon Orta
Hoping it doesn't sound rude ("i gave monee, you do dis"), there are also a few features that I think would benefit from being implemented early in development:
- Visual keybinding interface
From their Patreon page, it looks like they already went this route, although they show the old fat controller instead of the Controller S. A visual representation of the controller is simply much more desirable for the user than a vertical list of inputs.
- Thumbstick deadzone
The Dolphin emulator benefits a lot from this simple feature.
- Invertible stick axis (even if it is simply letting the user bind them wrong on purpose)
It allows players to invert the camera axis in games that don't allow it, especially flight games. It sounds like a no-brainer but ePSXe, for example, got buggy when I tried to do it. I rediscovered so many Gamecube games that I had to give up on back in the day, like Rogue Squadron or Zelda.
- Visual filters
A lot of filters provided by Dolphin are not really useful, but auto_toon gives a good visual style and is extremely effective when it comes to hiding old age. At the very least, a sharpness slider can make a game look immensely better at a very minimal cost.
As a side note, some European versions of the Xbox couldn't render in 720/60. The HD market wasn't very developped at the time and Microsoft figured they should drop the feature entirely instead of making the system future-proof. In simple terms, the machine can, but its OS cannot ask it to.
European owners bypass this by softmodding the console, i.e. installing a custom OS through a USB stick. My guess is that the emulator will overtake the default rendering resolution, making the reimplementation of that feature irrelevant.
I have been playing PSP, PS2 and GameCube games lately, and each time I am amazed at how good they look by simply rendering them in 1080p. Some Xbox games still hold up very well to this day, and no doubt a mere HD push will show the guts that machine had.
This post might be a bit disjointed and it's already quite long. I hope it doesn't sound like it is focused on a sort of PR brainstorming regarding which demo would get the most public attention, I just want to generate an interesting discussion, find anyone who doesn't know yet and get the word out, send a few coins. Against all odds, after everyone believed hope had disappeared, after all these years...
It's happening!
For closure, here is a short list of games to showcase what this 2001 console is capable of and how, yes indeed, they need little more than an HD push.
