Let me introduce you to... Moonlight.
What is Moonlight?
- Moonlight is a tool that is used to stream your games or any program in 720p/1080p/4k with 60 FPS and with extremely low delay from one host PC that is NVIDIA Gamestream compatible to any supported device that you or your friend(s) have. Up to 4 players in total.
How does this work and what do I need?
-
Moonlight works by having one PC, the main host, be the focal point for all other devices.
-
The host just has to have a good system, an NVIDIA GPU, GeForce Experience, and a Gamestream ready rig. The remaining users can have AMD or NVIDIA. Everyone who is using the desktop version needs Google Chrome for desktop and let it be updated to the latest version. The host will have to have a stable and fast connection as well as being able to port forward on their router.
-
Moonlight uses the protocol used by the NVIDIA Shield and wrote a set of 3rd party clients. This means that once the host sets up everything, the other three players can quickly join and play any LAN or Co-op split-screen game on the hosts computer with ease. Yes, this means your friend can have not the best computer in the world, but as long as they have at least a stable 10 Megabit down/up connection and live relatively close by (below 70-80 ping), they can play.
-
If you wish to use gamepads, you will need to have an extra one connected to the host for each of his friends. It's like a dummy controller but I believe the last one you add is the one you are going to use. You might have to do this with keyboards as well, haven't tested it. So far, I only know that the XBox 360 and PS4 controller work perfectly fine, maybe some other 3rd party scripts can add use for any other controllers, but I haven't checked.
How well does this work?
- This works almost perfectly with any program the host adds to GeForce Experience's Shield tab. There are some few bugs with certain, unique programs, but trial and error or a quick google search can help you out.
This sounds fantastic! What do I/my friend need to do to host?!
-
I'm glad you asked! There is a few steps y'all need to do to get things goin'! Aside from looking up at the prerequisites above, the host will need to do the following:
- The host has to update their GPU and GeForce Experience to the latest version.
- The host has to enable Gamestream on the NVIDIA tab in GeForce Experience.
- The host has to add Gamestream to their Firewall exclusions. If not, there may be issues.
- The host has to get his Wan IP from here to give to the client when it's time.
-
The host has to port forward the following to their correct protocol. It will have to be forwarded to the hosts PC in their network. Check in cmd by typing ipconfig and finding the IPv4 address if the host does not know his/hers:
TCP 35043, 47984, 47989, 47995, 47996, 48010
UDP 47998, 47999, 48000, 48010
-
It is time for the client(s) turn to work since the host is done,
the client will need to do the following:- The client has to download the Moonlight extension for Chrome. Here or directly from here. Click and drag it unto your extensions tab and install it. Start it up from either your desktop or Chrome.
- Enable remote audio, 60 FPS, desired resolution, and click ADD HOST. Input the Wan IP of the host here and press continue.
-
Finally, the host will have an option to allow the client(s) to stream with the host, the host has to allow it once it pops up. Once that is done, the client will just have to start up the program from the list that appears! Or just mess around in the hosts desktop if you want.
The client/I don't see the application that they/I want to start on the list! What should we do?
- Easy peasy! Go to your Shield tab in your GeForce Experience client and click ADD and just add the application! It could be a game executable, a launcher for a game, or anything really.
This ends my guide for using and understanding Moonlight! Please feel free to ask me any basic questions you have and I will try to reply as soon as I can. Also, please share this information with anyone you know that might be interested in this, it's definitely something I want to share with as many of my friends as possible! Thank you for reading.
