How to enjoy everything I have now but do it more cheaply?

We currently have about 40 shows that we record on our DirecTV DVR. About half are cable-only, and half are available OTA. The cable-only shows are on A&E, AMC, CN, DISC, FX, GSN, HALL, Syfy, TBS, truTV, and TVLand. If necessary, we could pare that list down to AMC, DISC, FX, and Syfy. The convenience of having a DVR record shows automatically and offer them up in a ready-to-watch menu is really important to me.

We don't subscribe to any premium channels, any sports channels, or any other premium content.

I read the Starter Guide and found out that most of my OTA channels are "green." The ABC affiliate is in yellow, but if I install an antenna, it'll be in the attic, so I'm hopeful that I won't experience any reception issues. I realize that my antenna choice will depend on the DVR solution I settle on. I've skimmed the helpful "What Antenna should I buy?" by /u/sylver_dragon and will reference that again later on.

My current setup

  • Charter broadband internet
  • DirecTV
  • Netflix (used a lot)
  • Amazon Prime (used nearly never)
  • Home fully wired with Ethernet, centralized in a professionally-installed networking closet:
    • DirecTV and broadband coax connections enter the house here
    • 802.11 ac WiFi (main router in closet; 3 access points elsewhere)
    • Synology DS216+II: 6TB capacity; 60% available
  • LR: SHDTV, DirecTV Genie DVR, Roku 4, Kodi, Slingbox 350, Logitech Harmony Companion
    • There's an HTPC running Kodi and Plex media server in the LR, the Plex content being stored on the Synology
    • I have a PlexPass subscription which supports DVR capability. It might make sense to take advantage of that capability, but I'm willing to purchase a Roamio or a Tablo if that's a better solution
  • MBR: HDTV, DirecTV Genie Mini, Roku 3, Logitech Harmony Smart Control
  • Game Room: older 720p HDTV, XBox One
  • Various laptops, MacBooks, iMacs, PCs, iOS devices

We watch nearly all of our content on the LR TV. We consume very little content on computers, tablets, or phones, the one big exception being Netflix on iPads in the wee hours when insomnia strikes.

What I like about my current DirecTV setup

  • Genie DVR: fantastic UI; intuitive and rock-solid performance
  • Genie mini unit: rock-solid performance that allows full control of main DVR
  • Program guide
  • Unified content (networks, cable-only channels) on DVR
  • Phone app for scheduling and viewing

What I'd like to be able to do

  • Eliminate or drastically reduce my monthly bill (about $80)
  • Mimic DirecTV DVR functionality, recording as much content in HD quality as possible
  • Watch on any device: primarily over Ethernet but also over WiFi

Any insights / suggestions / observations greatly appreciated!
