To those of you who have a Xbox One S hooked up to a 4K TV, do you let the Xbox or TV do the upscaling? Why?
In my situation I can see no difference between having my Xbox One S do the upscaling (set to 4K UHD) vs having my TV do the upscaling (set to 1080P). I have tried many different scenarios and when switching back and forth between 4K UHD and 1080P I see no difference. I am currently using a more budget oriented 4K "HDR" TV, the Samsung UN40KU6290.
I ultimately decided to let the Xbox One S do the upscaling because it makes more sense to me. Here's why...
1: Input Lag / Response Times: I assume that having the Xbox One S handle the upscaling is better in regard to input lag and response times. I look at it like this. When my Xbox is set to 4K UHD, it sends an upscaled image to my TV and my TV just has to display the image that it is receiving. When my Xbox is not set to 4K UHD, it sends an image to my TV that my TV has to upscale (modify), taking an additional step before displaying the image that it received. How much this effects anything at all, I have no idea. It just makes more sense to me.
2: Upscaling an Upscaled image: For example, say you are playing a game that is actually running at 720P. (Like many do) The Xbox is going to upscale the image from 720P to 1080P and output it to your TV. Now your TV is going to upscale the already upscaled 1080P image to 4K. If you are going to let your TV do the upscaling, doesn't it make more sense to set the Xbox display output to 720p then?
These are obviously just my opinions and theories. I want to see what others think about the Xbox One S upscaling capabilities and hear their opinions on the matter. What they found in their situations. I would really like to hear from someone who has a Samsung UN40KU6290 or 6300 as well.
