Build Help: First PC Build for son, mainly gaming, watching youtube, schoolwork. £750 budget.

Build Help

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

FPS online shooters, watching youtube, Kodi media centre, will be usin for schoolwork, we use Apache Open Office, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Music and video files are stored on external USB HDDs.

Currently he games on an xbox one, so no games to transfer in, he is planning on getting games via Steam or similar

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440 will really be a max, at the moment we are happy with 720 res gaming, but obviously would like to see an improvement, and dont want something that is going to end up being lower specced than the Project Scorpio. fps rates? I genuinely dont see any reason for tryng to go over 60fps, running smooothly at 30 fps, in 1080 with no frame rate issues, I'd be happy with that for now, and also ,i think these fairly modest requirements will be achievable over time, with new games as they appear. I dont really want to have something that will run games now but in 12 months time be struggling and chugging along like a clapped out transit van.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Original budget is £750, but having spent a few days looking through various set ups, we can stretch this a little bit further. If anyone is prepared to give me a few suggestions, PLEASE, bear in mind the current build really is the absolute MAX we can spend on it.
It would be good if people could suggest ways we could save a few quid to be honest , rather than upgrades.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Rainy UK

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

*OS: I think I've got a Windows 8 disc at my office/work, but obviously installed it on my desktop down there. I considered Linux, till I realised games are written for an OS. Amazon are doing Windows 8 for £39 at the moment , so I might just do that heartwrenching task of shelling out for an OS from Microsoft.

*The case requirements: white, and with clear side panel, and some sort of LED thing going on, which is why we've got the p400 in the list rather than the NZXT s340 which was the other main option. Is it fairly simple and cheap to fit some kind of LED to the fans, and the internals if we were to order the S340 instead?

don't *think** we need an additional cooling fan, we're not planning on overclocking, but obviously we will have the option, and will sort out a fan later if required

*I'm wondering whether we might get away with 8Gb DDRAM, but my gut feeling is to get 16GGb in there. There's not much point spending the extra though , double in fact, cost if the 16Gb are unlikely to be needed at this point by the GPU/CPU with current games on release.

  • I'm sure people will advise me to use an SSD. At the moment we are tryin to keep costs down and performance up. I know SSD will provide decent performance improvements, but a 240Gb, max, SSD to stay "within" the budget wouldn't be big enough to get many games on the go. At the moment the plan is to get an SSD in there at a later date. Would we be better getting an SSD in there immediately, and then adding a 7200 HDD? As I said, music and media are all going to be on external USB HDDs anyway. As I've typed that I think a 240 Gb SSD might be a better way to start out

*the PC will be upstairs and would need a 7-8 m extennsion from the LAN router, again, i think wired is always better wwhere possible, but I've been told wireless adaptors are far more efficient now, and will be able to provide just as good a connection speed. Thoughts anyone?

  • We do not have to have the thing built and running for another 6-8 weeks so we are hoping to be able to shave a few quid off here and there by buying components as and when and indeed IF any of them drop in price.

not looking for a sound card as I *assume there is sound onboard the motherboard, son will mainly play with headset and 3.5mm jack, or small pc speakers also via 3.5mm jack

  • I've never built a PC before, my wife thinks we'd be better off getting someone else to build it for us, or to get an off the shelf one, but prebuilt ones I've seen that my sons friends use look a bit shit tbh. I have a vape/ecig business, I can repair electronic stuff, and understand how all these components fit together, watching youtube videos it looks a bit like Lego, with a few connectors thrown in. I recently (possibly the proudest achievement of my entire life !!) built an Ikea Brimnes bed, listed as one of the top 7 most pita Ikea items to self assemble. This went without hitches and all fitted together seamlessly. -Can anyone tell my missis whether she's likely to be overly worried about thedifficuulty? - Can I do this having read up on it, taken advice on the components, and watched a few youtubes, and got a nice big clean area to work in?

I think thats everything I need to mention, I hope I'm within your rules on this post, and sorry for being a bit too wordy, just wanted to try and get everything relevant out the way and make it as clear as possible what we're after. (although, yeah, fewer words might have made it clearer :D )

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.
