Comprehensive List of Flaws of the Nintendo Switch

As I'm still undecided about buying the Switch, I dig around the web and decided to make a list of things that are keeping me away from dropping money, feel free to add upon them.

.1. charge cable at the bottom

  • no charging in tabletop mode without quite pricey (20 €) bulky extra equipment or digging a hole into your desk/table/whatever

  • awkward charging while in handheld mode when trying to rest by e. g. putting the switch on your blanket with the potential of ruining the power charge by bending it (I ruined a lot of USB chargers of my phone this way.)

.2. battery being a big limiting factor

  • quite short time until you have to charge again, the same way as the old 3DS (which was heavily criticised for it) and the old 3DS at least has the charge cable at the top

  • GPU has to be underclocked for battery uptime.

  • Joy-Cons are only allowed to use very little amount of power, leading to wireless connectivity problems and thus unresponsiveness when e. g. holding the Joy-Con for tabletop mode behind your blanket.

.3. no D-pad

  • lacking support for new and old 2d titles, especially hindering the success of virtual console without buying another specialized Joy-Con with a D-pad if it releases one day for around 50 €

.4. lacking hardware power

  • While BotW looks like a very very promising game as a whole, we can't deny that the render distance and texture quality is both on the very low end. This quite heavily hinders the immersion in this new awesome vast world (especially when things like rocks, grass or ambient creatures only pop up 5 meters in front of you). If we add upon that, lightning and potentially antialiasing seem to have taken a hit since the first trailers for Wii U back in 2014. Then there is the issue of weird hazing. And finally there is the potential last low point when Cemu (Wii U emulator) releases an HD update Wii U version of BotW in maybe half a year, making it and not the Switch version the definitive one, screwing over those who invested into the Switch and not e. g. just bought the Wii U version and dumped it for Cemu or straight out pirated it. This is no problem if you will never have access to a gaming pc, but especially the folks who buy Nintendo products as an extension for their gaming pc game library will take a hit from this. Ofc, someone could argue that you are in the moral right to download a dumped Wii U version if you purchased the Switch version, but pirating is pirating and can ruin your life when you get litigated, so don't do it (ofc this whole discussion does not matter for countries in which dumping/modding itself is illegal, but that's not the case for all countries). And in case you own a Wii U and bought the Switch version for its upgrades (better sounds for example), you would have to buy the Wii U version again for dumping purposes. Finally, there is the possebility for the Wii U version to actually look better than the Switch one in regard to lightning, hazing and blooming if you follow the various comparison videos, but we can't be sure as those comparisons for the most part compare different builds of the game. However, if the Wii U version is actually superior in regards to graphics (without Cemu modding), it definitely does not look so great for the Switch as far as the hardware goes. Absolutely finally (I know, this seems to has no end), a 30 fps lock and even then frame drops on tv mode is very scary for the Switch's power.

  • 720p/900p/1080p is already outdated or on the low-end, this will especially show when the new Xbox and PS will release with 4k, which can happen as early as around next E3.

  • others have found harsher words: "No. Fuck no. No you're not going to be able to fit Titanfall on it. That's the same Zelda from the Wii U [laughs]." (Respawn Entertainment senior designer Mohammad Alavi)

  • another example: https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/820774822691176449?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

  • the Switch being marketed with quite old games likes Skyrim

  • Even if you bring up the argument of the Switch being a handheld, you can't deny that Nintendo isn't really marketing it as one but a true hybrid, so these points stay valid (especially when the dock function heavily hinders the mobile charging as explained in point 1).

  • no Pascal → not on the high-end of mobile gpu power

.5. pricing

  • The Switch launches around 50 € pricier than the Nintendo 3DS on launch and we all know how Nintendo had to lower the price drastically. The possebility of getting screwed over by buying early is real.

  • Accessories like pro controller and extra joy-cons are not cheap, more like the opposite.

  • 70 € for one AAA game

  • artificial scarcity

.6. outdated and contradictory behaviour by Nintendo for the Switch

  • charge for online play ↔ deny global voice chat because kids

  • introduce a comprehensive parental control system ↔ deny global voice chat because ???

  • introduce Nintendo-Accounts ↔ 32 GB internal storage

  • require smartphones for voice chat/There seems to be no Bluetooth headset support, at least at release.

.7. not building upon established gaming controls

  • Instead of trying to build upon the GC controller design they introduce movement controls once again and a pro controller that seems to be worse than a years old GC controller in regard to handling.

  • Joy-Cons are designed by necessity (see also point 3).

.8. Miscellaneous

  • Not all USB-C-chargers seem to be suited for the Switch.

  • Possebility of the kickstand being to frail to hold the Switch in tabletop outside of perfect underfloor conditions, however it is designed nicely to not break itself.

Hopefully I did not forget something.

Finally, please don't just downvote because you preordered a Switch and just want to blend out the critics as a whole. I understand that some points may be no valid critics for you, but I want to remind you that some points are always subjective and I could have been harsher. If I would have endless money I would just buy a Switch with a Pro controller and tabletop charge dock for BotW and enjoy it, then buy a Wii U and Wii U version of BotW for Cemu and a new gpu for my pc. If there wouldn't be all these cons I could just buy a Switch and BotW and be done with it.

I may still buy a Switch on Friday (my local Media Markt still has enough of them), but I will definitely not feel like "this was a good investment" and more like "I had to do this because of BotW at release in the then definitive version.".

Discuss.

Might the existance of VR be a opportunity for more third party support on the switch?

READ THE TEXT PLEASE OR LEAVE

This TOPIC is NOT about using VR on the switch

So we all know the switch is very likely not as strong as an xbox one or ps4. Especially not in handheld mode.

So multiplattform games need to be heavily reworked to work on the weaker system.

With VR and especially the PSVR its kind of the same. The OG Ps4 isnt capable enough to run PS4 like games in VR. So games like Resident Evil 7 need to be reworked to use less ressources. Assets gets downgraded, textures, polygons and so on.

But wont this process open the door to port the game more easily to the switch? If you already have a "lower assets" version of your game?

IMO Resident Evil 7 shouldnt have much problem to run on the switch in 720p30fps undocked with PSVR quality as an example (obviously not in VR on the switch but just normal on the screen using the same assets as the "weaker" PSVR Version).

What do you think?

Third Party games that currently have a VR Mode (announced):

  • Elite Dangerous
  • Dirt Rallye
  • Project Cars
  • Ace Combat 7
  • Resident Evil 7
  • Fallout 4
  • Doom

I also think its possible to see something like the next Call of Duty beeing playable in VR / on PSVR this holiday if Sony and Activision making a deal.

I think this thread is an great example of dozens of people here not even bothering with reading what a text is even about but still commenting and downvoting. Dunno whats wrong with this sub in the past weeks. :(

Great Game. Need lots of fixes, but the biggest one is the screen tearing on Xbox One.

I don't want any other platform, I know PS4 runs better and PC rules the universe, but the screen tears on the Xbox One version are shit house. Drop it to 720p for all I care, just get it running better.

Is there a way i can make this work?

I've been streaming with the twitch app on Xbox but i hate it because it's never consistent, one day its good but the next its always lagging even though i have good internet (50/25).Now because of this i want to get an Elgato (either the HD or HD60) to stream my Xbox one from my laptop, the problem is that my laptop has an i3-6100u which people have said wont be able to do it. But is there really no way? My Xbox is whats playing the game. Can quick sync help? I've heard that streaming from the elgato program is demanding but what about using the elgato with OBS? Also i'm not really trying to stream in 1080p 60fps!, but like 720p or 480p.

Building a Streaming PC between $600-$900.

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using. I’ll be using my PC to stream console games and PC games. PC games such as GTA V and H1Z1 I have no interest in, I prefer streaming smaller games or Indie titles. I have an Avermedia Live Gamer Portable 2 for my console games. I’d also like to stream games at 1080p 60 FPS if possible with the budget I listed below, if not I’ll settle at 720p 60 FPS.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes? My Budget is between $600-$900 (maybe able to put more money if it helps, but wanting to spend the least).

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy. I plan to buy the parts in Mid-March 2017, and plan to build the PC by Early to Mid-April 2017 when all parts are received.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc) I may need Windows 7 or 10, whichever one is cheaper and more helpful. I also may need a monitor if it doesn’t go over my budget, otherwise I can buy one off of EBay or use my TV as the monitor for PC games and editing. I may also need a capture card built into my PC, if it’s necessary, I do have an Avermedia Gamer Portable 2.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location? I’d like to purchase most of my PC parts in the US and there is a Micro Center nearby where I live.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated. I’ll be reusing my Chroma Razer Mouse and a general keyboard, and if I don’t have enough money for a new monitor, I’ll just reuse my Gateway Monitor LCD Model No HX2000 C.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU? I’m actually interested in Overclocking my CPU and GPU right away if it helps with livestreaming and if my budget lets me… otherwise I can wait down the line.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc) Maybe a higher storage for my PC games and saved clips for when I want to record/edit down the line.

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components? I’m not really picky when it comes to the case, I’d rather focus my budget more on the CPU and GPU than the overall outside look of my PC.

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference? I may need a copy of Windows 7 or 10 whatever is best suited for streaming.

Extra info or particulars: I do often draw a lot, and I do have a tablet already; I also want to edit video clips to post online, so storage may be an important as well. My main focus is console gaming live streaming (PS4, XBOX, Switch, Wii U, etc.) If my budget is ok I’d like to add a capture card to my PC.

Thanks in advance /buildapcforme community! - Hondew13

Seiki SE39UY04 Resolution

This is a stupid question, and basic, but I can't find an answer. I don't know how to set the resolution on my Seiki SE39UY04 television. It's supposed to be able to do 4K@30fps or 1080P@60fps but I don't know how to set the resolution. It's not in the menu, and the user manual says to press the P.SIZE (picture size) button on the remote to cycle resolution - but the remote that came with the TV doesn't have a P.SIZE button, only P.MODE. P.MODE cycles the default picture modes such as movie and dynamic.

I've also done about 30 minutes of other googling and found people talking about this but using utilities like nVidia's software to manually adjust it. Every link I found was about using it as a monitor, whereas I'm using it for my Xbox.

It's stuck on 480i@60fps. I want to get it to at least 720p if not 1080. There are lots of games where I can't even read text on the screen. It's killer. Thanks.

GTX 940mx not good enough in a year or two?

Since the 940mx gddr5 version is a bit better than the ps4 or xbox one, and games being made from now til the foreseeable will still be made for those consoles, will the 940mx not be enough in a few years,I'm wanting to know because I'm looking at buying a new laptop with one, to play triple a titles at 720p 30fps and I want to make sure I don't waste my money.

Just got an xbox one -- why is it forcing me to 720?

My TV can do 1080i, xbox only outputs 1080p? No other options in settings. My eyes must be old I can barely read it. Guess I need a new TV?

A few questions about HD CRT's

Right now my setup includes a 24" CRT (Sony KV-24FS100) for 240p and 480i signals and a 32" 720p LCD (Sony KDL-32S3000) for 480p and 720p signals. I'm pretty happy with them but HD CRT's have caught my interest, mostly for the possibility of displaying native 480p without any upscaling. There are a few things I've been wondering about so I figured I'd ask you guys before I start scouring craigslist.

  1. First, a lot of HD CRT's advertise accepting 720p signals, but do any of them actually display them in 720p or do they all convert it to 1080i? I'd love to be able to display the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii U at their native resolutions.

  2. I've read that the HDMI ports on HD CRT's can suffer from a lot of input lag since HDMI was pretty new at the time, is this true?

  3. I know the Sony XBR960 and XBR970 are highly recommended, are there any other models I should look out for?

  4. I'd like to hook up the Dreamcast as well but I don't think many HD CRT's came with VGA ports, are there any good methods to convert a 480p signal from VGA to component?

I hope you guys can clear some of this up for me, thanks!

Skylanders Imaginators Switch: The Good, The Bad, and The Chompy.

I played the game for about an hour of the four hour Nintendo Switch event. It's basically identical to the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions graphically. But, it has really bad loading times. To the point that the girl who was working at the booth thought that the game had frozen, because it had been loading for over a minute. It also seems like cutscenes in-between levels cannot be skipped. As they feature a big "LOADING" on the screen the whole time. You would think that lower quality graphics would equal better performance, but the game runs pretty slow when docked. Normally in the overworld map, your Skylanders travel around at a speedy pace. On, the Switch version, they were about normal speed. Then, when playing levels, the characters moved kind of slowly. Also, certain attacks caused massive slowdown. An interesting thing that I noticed, is that the chests with gear load faster, when you open them. They don't have that weird slowdown that I have sometimes experienced on PS4 opening one chest after another. They had the sound turned completely off, and were blasting music with a DJ at the event, so unfortunately I couldn't deduce the sound quality of the Switch version. The game is kind of blurry and warped looking on a 1080p screen when docked. But, when played in portable mode on the Switch screen at 720p, the game looks much better, and seems to run slightly better as well. Also, all of the menus are touch screen, or not. Depending on how you want to play. The right analog stick that scans the Skylanders is so fast, it read every figure in a second or two maximum. It's obviously better tech than we have in our current portals. And, hopefully it gets implemented in Skylanders portals for the 2018 game. I really like the idea of taking all of my Skylanders on the go. But, this is basically identical to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, minus the racing and traps, and with longer load times. A strange thing that I did notice, that was kind of cool. This could be just because it was a demo. But, almost all gear had already been unlocked for Imaginators customization, and all the chests that I was opening had some of the new and (possibly) unreleased items and weapons in them.

New RCA 4k tv seems to cause definite input lag

Whats up guys? I just bought a new 50 inch RCA RLDED5098-UHD 4k TV, prior to that I was using a 32 inch standard 1080p tv.

I hooked this up and was excited to use it even though my xbox doesnt output in 4k, I love the size. However there is definite input lag now and its affecting all of my games, I even tried turning on and off 4k mode, running my xbox one in 720p instead of 1080 etc and nothing seems to help.. There is also no gaming mode that I can find and I really hope im missing something.

It would really suck to have send this back and wait for another tv since this was the only one in my price range..Thanks in advance for any help. Also it is hooked up to HDMI 1 if that helps and there are 4 slots.

[HELP] my projector stopped taking 720/1080 for no reason

Got a new projector, hooked it up to my Xbox one. Played great for about a week.

Tried to play a dvd and the projector froze. Turned both my Xbox and projector off to get it to work again. After we finished watching Arrival (awesome) and I turned it off, it won't accept the input the next day. I have to reset the Xbox to 640x480 for it to show up.

Turn it to 720 or 1080 and the input stopped being received.

Any suggestions? I can't imagine why it would stop taking the input after working perfectly fine

I don't want to descend.. Need advice..

Hi,

i owned a PC since i was 12 (22 now) and i love it. I always played games, even though i never had any high-end build.

I am used to play at 720p and 30fps, but now that i make nice money at my job, i want more, i want to play the new Hitman, Watch Dogs 2, Mafia 3.

My current build is this: AMD Phenom II X4 (OCed to 3.8GHZ, 4 cores) Nvidia GTX 750 Ti Gigabyte 970A-D3 (AM3+) 8GB RAM

My budget that i can use for PC/Console is around 250 USD and i can buy a new Xbox for these money in my country without problem.. but i hate consoles, i always did, i was always a huge fan of PC gaming, and always tried to make my friends understand why PC is much better.. but now im lost.

I bought the GFX pretty recently and its bottlenecking already..

The CPU is ancient and propably needs upgrade too.

Is there a way to upgrade one or both of these things to be glorious again? (i dont need 4K/60FPS, 1080p 30fps would be amazing and to last for around 2 years maybe)

Are there any good/cheap parts you can recommend me to buy?

Please give me your best advices, masters of PCMR, and save me from the peasantry thats falling on me..

Sorry for my bad english..

Apple Airport(*) trying to force my Asus router to connect to main router instead of Extender

this is kind of difficult to explain, but here goes: i rent an apartment in my Landlords Basement, and i connect to his Wifi as part of our Lease contract, but before out of goodwill, he had a TP cable poking out of the roof for me to connect my Wireless router to. but after my Landlord had som remodeling done to his office, he had to cut the cord. he says that this is not a problem, as he put in a Airport express extender in the living room that should cover my apartment (Same SSID on both airport extreme and airport express) which it partially does. my issue is, that my Xbox does not want to connect to it(works fine with hotspot on my iphone and at a friends house) the wifi signal is bad where i have my gaming rig (small hallway) and i am not able to stream from my pc to plex on anything higher than 720 kbps.

After doing some snooping, i found that Mr landlord has 13 devices connected to wifi, wireless speakers on the 2.4ghz spectrum, and we live next to a huge appartment building where theres atleast a dozen ssid`s broadcasting on the same channel as he does. i talked to him about trying to change channels etc, but he says "he had proffessionals set up this network, and dont trust me to not mess it up"

what i have tried to do to work around the streaming problem and low signal strength is to connect my ASUS RT-AC66U AC1750 GIGABIT ROUTER as and extender to the SSID using the pre shared key and using the Wizard on the router, but this causes huge issues, and the entire network goes down (so much for me not messing up the network ey?) i believe this is caused by my router connecting to the extender in his living room, and not the airport extreme in his office.. from what i can read on apple faq: If another extended Wi-Fi base station ➋ is placed between the primary Wi-Fi base station ➊ and the extended Wi-Fi base station ➌, the extended Wi-Fi base station ➌ will not allow clients to join it. All extended Wi-Fi base stations must be in direct range of the primary Wi-Fi base station

this brings me to my final question: is there some way to configure my asus to conect only to the airport extreme without having to change ssid, channels or do any configuration on his devices?

TLDR: can i force my Asus router to connect to a specific accesspoint, when extender and accesspoint share the same ssid?

Crappy topology drawing where the blue arrow is what im trying to do :http://i.imgur.com/hV1o6Ga.jpg?1

sorry for the wall of text :)

Laggy stream with good upload speed

So i currently am currently with Rogers as my internet provider since i live in Canada. I'm paying for the 250U package which is supposed to yield a download speed of 250mbps and a upload of 20mbps. After running a speed test while I'm directly connected to my modem i have a download speed of 328.21mbps and an upload speed of 23.74mbps. So from these stat i assume i can run a steam at 1080p but i decided to run my stream on 720p so users who are on their ipads of phones wont get as much buffering. Problem is i still have a lot of lag on my stream. I usually start with a bitrate of 3000 and if that doesnt work i slowly make my way down to a bitrate of 1500 but still have lag on my streams. Here is a link to my most recent stream on youtube so you can see whats happening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irPJlpx4xac . Im currently playing Skyrim on my xbox one and have an elgato HD60 connecting my xbox to my tv and laptop. I do notice my upload speed drops significantly once i start streaming, but after arguing with my internet provider he told me that was normal. Ive only noticed my upload drop to about 10mbps but that should be more than enough to run at 720p. Here is a screen shot of my obs settings so hopefully you can see if i configured something wrong. http://imgur.com/a/BZgPz Thanks for the help :)

Final check on $750 build, and cable question

Coming from being a Xbox 360 and PS4 gamer. I have wanted to get into PC gaming for a long time now but haven't made the full leap.

What I want is 1080p high/ultra settings, 60 fps. I currently play CS:GO on a MacBook and am tired of 40-50 fps 720p low settings. I will also probably be picking up BF1, and some Triple-A titles next year, trying to move away from being a console peasant (I already stopped paying for PS Plus, I got tired of it).

I am purchasing my parts in the USA, with a budget of $750, off of Amazon.

Here is my parts list: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Type Item Price
CPU Intel Core i5-7500 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor $196.33 @ OutletPC
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $55.88 @ OutletPC
Memory Corsair 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory $54.99 @ Newegg
Storage Seagate FireCuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive $104.89 @ OutletPC
Video Card MSI Radeon RX 480 8GB ARMOR 8G OC Video Card $208.98 @ Newegg
Case NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case $66.99 @ SuperBiiz
Power Supply EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply $48.98 @ OutletPC
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
Total (before mail-in rebates) $767.04
Mail-in rebates -$30.00
Total $737.04

And some other things: What cables do I need to buy? Do the cables come with the Mobo/PSU/Case? As a console peasant I have honestly no idea. If I need to buy them separate, where?

I opted for a SSHD because I do not care about load times at all (as long as they aren't ridiculous), but want a snappy windows boot-up. I'll save the $50 and wait 5 seconds more for the next map to load.

So really, just the question about the cables, and a final check on this build.

Would you play Smite on a Switch?

So the Switch is coming out soon (or if you couldn't get a pre-order then it'll be coming out in a month or two longer) so here is what i'm thinking. Would you play Smite on the Switch? But wait before you give a solidified opinion as i'll try to give a few reasons why it could be a good or a bad idea.

Well first off I guess I should put this out first but it's portable. Unlike most consoles it can be taken out on the go and play elsewhere. Sure with a 3 hour battery life it'll not be the longest play session, but with 3 hours you could play maybe 2-4 matches depending on how evenly the teams are or how many f7 warriors exist.

Now time for a detriment let's just say that since it is kind of a portable it's most likely weaker than the ps4/xbox1. Therefore it's not going to look very pretty. I'd imagine that the Switch could probably run Smite on low or maybe medium settings at 720p.

Switching from bad to good If you do take it out to the general population you can probably get into some interesting conversations about gods/monsters with people that know little. Except you'll probably have to clarify that Fenrir isn't a robot, Sobek isn't Godzilla, and that Jing Wei isn't some prepubescent teen.

Time for some more negatives. You'll need a smart phone for voice communication... However since no one in Smite even uses the curse voice chat it's not that terrible... Well the controllers may not be amazing, but hey at least it's better than the Vita and if you wanted to you could make that work (evidence: http://imgur.com/TBsBtBU) .

Now for the last good thing I can think of late at night within a few minutes, is that it can give another option. You can play it on a laptop, a desktop pc, xbox1, ps4, and having it on another console simply gives us more options, and having another mobile option could let people play Smite while on vacation or at a convention.

Now for the last bad thing I can think of kind of late at night. Nintendo may Encourage Hi-Rez to make use of some of the systems gimmicks. Would you like to waggle the joy cons in order to auto attack? Would like you like to feel anhur's spears leave his paws? as he throws them with the hd-rumble? Would you enjoy using the IR Sensor to... navigate menus by pointing your finger? So many odd things that Hi-Rez could do and we may have to suffer through the gimmicks!

[Build Help] Help Me Repair My Dream Streaming Rig!

[Build Help] Help me repair my dream streaming rig!

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes.

--What do I need?--

  • A new GPU (or Two) - My R7 250 just died. It was out of date anyways. I tried a Nvidia 960, but it couldn't drive enough displays and I wasn't thrilled with the NVidia experience compared to AMD (though this isn't a strong preference). I have two dual-slot PCIe 2.0 x16 slots open, but only one is full-length, and I'd prefer to minimize heat if using two GPUs (though this isn't a strong preference).

  • Maybe some other things - A new GPU is the only thing I need to get my PC functional again, but I ask for advice in a few of my sections. Feel free to provide advice in areas you care about, and ignore the others.

--What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.--

This is my dream streaming and video production rig, and its (outdated) GPU just died. I'll enumerate details below.

Capture

  • I primarily stream SNES era games, which are up-scaled through my Framemeister, which generates a 720p60 HDMI output with somewhat unstable sync. Currently, I capture this through my HD60, but I'd like to replace my Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4k with either something that's low-latency (<50ms) and more tolerant of poor sync or something that will clean up the sync on my input for the Blackmagic.

  • I also capture 1080p60 from my Xbox Ones, PS4, etc. (I just put these behind a switch with the Retro HDMI input)

  • I stream to twitch, and other services, so I need to be able to handle multiple encoding streams. One hardware encoder is nice. Two or more would be awesome.

  • I don't need to worry about capturing local gaming. If I need to stream something instense, I'll capture an HDMI out from our gaming rig.

Peripherals

  • USB - I'm setup to stream from multiple setups in the gaming room, so I run 5-6 webcams in my config. The LifeCams are good at sharing a USB hub, but the c920s each require their own USB Root (they're awful at sharing), hence I have an extra 3.0 bus. I've also got to support the audio interfaces and various other things, like printers, scanners, and midi controllers.

  • Thunderbolt / USB 3.1 - I don't have any Thunderbolt devices yet, but my laptop is a Macbook and it was a really good price... so I have a Thunderbolt/USB3.1 Type-C and a USB3.1 Type-A port open.

  • Audio - Audio quality is important. I use the focusrite for monitoring and the primary streaming location, and the Behringer for mixing secondary sites. I'd like to add something to my workflow like Apple's Mainstage, either adding some software to this rig, or adding a Mac Mini. (I've got a very good KVM).

Software

  • Streaming - I currently use OBS, and I'm pretty happy with it currently. If I upgrade, I'll probably just move to a hardware device like the Blackmagic Television Studio HD.

  • Video Editing - I use the Adobe Creative Suite for video editing. The system seems to handle this fairly well. I suspect any modern GPU will support its hardware acceleration, but multiple hardware encoders would be nice for batch renders.

  • Gaming - I do very little gaming actually on the PC. I've got a gaming rig and consoles for that. Sometimes I play Hearthstone or Jackbox?

  • Live Audio Processing - I really like Apple's Mainstage. I'm trying to learn Ableton Live. I'd love either suggestions of other live software, affirmations of Ableton, or pushes to just add a Mac Mini to the setup and off-load this work.

  • Lots of other processes - I usually have a large number of chat clients and other background processes running at all times, thus the decision for an 8-core processor.

--If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)--

I don't care about gaming, but I do have some very specific GPU requirements, so I'll enumerate them here.

  • Hardware H.264 encoding - I've been historically very happy with the quality of the AMD encoder, and unimpressed with the NVidia encoder (though I've only tested the 960).

  • Multiple Independant 1080p Outputs - I have a lot of software running in my workflow, I use some displays for monitoring. Currently I've got 4 setup, but ideally I'd like to be able to drive 6-8. I have no need for 4k. I have a preference for HDMI, but can easily support a few of my displays on DisplayPort or DVI).

  • Available Case Space - I have two double-width PCIe2.0 x16 slots open. I'd prefer only one GPU, but I'm open to two, if it better fits my needs, but only one slot if full-length and I'd prefer to minimize heat (nice-to-have), even if I can dissapate it, it sits under my desk and I don't want a huge heater down there.

--Budget--

Like most people, I don't want to spend more money than I need to spend on this, but... I'm comfortable spending up to $600 without much complaint, and I'm willing to spend up to $1500 for the perfect setup.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

'Murica!

I realize this is a very complicated setup, but I've been working on it for months. Thank you all for providing this place for support, and for any effort you put into helping my situation.

Thanks!

[Build Upgrade] I want to make my current computer as power efficient as possible without sacrificing too much power. What is the best way to do this?

My computer currently pulls about 90w-100w at idle and close to 400w when maxed out. I want to lower it, if possible to about 50w idle and 200w-250w maxed out.

Specs for my Current PC. Along with these I have 3x 230mm fans and 2x 140mm fans installed (4 came with the Thor)

Even though it is just an upgrade I figured I would fill this out anyway just to give you all more information.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Daily use/work, Plex Server, video transcoding, some gaming

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I am not as strict on this as I used to be. I have 3 1440p monitors but would be fine even playing on 720p since I usually use my Steam Link to play on my TV. I only really play Skyrim, Minecraft, and City Skylines, but occasionally I will play larger titled games that come out (still want to play The Witcher 3 & FO4). Playing at 720p with medium graphics doesn't matter to me as much as frame rate, but being able to play at 1080p or 1440p is a plus since I am used to that.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Have not set a budget but if a new build is required for what I want I would rather not spend more than $600

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA

What I am deciding between. My goal is to try and keep the wattage as low as possible.

I have been looking at replacing my CPU with an E3 1230L v3/E3 1240L v3 (25w TDP) and get a GTX 1050/1050ti/1060. Or I also have been looking at building a new computer with the i7 7700T or E3-1240L v5 ($165 on ebay) with a GTX 1050/1050ti/1060.

One other option I have been considering is to buy a Skull Cannon Nuc or Mac Mini and get an eGPU so I can just plug it in when I need it. Or ust get a regular NUC/Brix with Iris Graphics. I do have both a PS4 and Xbox One I could start using more for when I do need to game if I just got a NUC/Brix, but I prefer PC gaming to console gaming.

In addition to the above options, if I was to keep most of my PC what would I be able to do to make my computer more power efficient? Remove most of the fans? Get a Platinum rated PSU? Get a lower end mobo?

Any and all advice and opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Elgato Systems Game Capture HD High 1080p Definition Game Recorder

So there’s a lot of people out there that dream of starting a Gaming YouTube channel. People think that gaming YouTubers earn easy money for just playing games all day long. And that’s true for the most part. When you are a gaming YouTuber, then you have to worry about a lot of stuff like:

  1. Pleasing your audience: You can do that by creating high quality videos

  2. Creating High quality Content: You can do that by having a good capture card

  3. A good capture card: Elgato

It was my dream to start a youtube channel and be a gaming youtuber so I can earn money and it still is my dream. And so for that, I went out and did extensive research. I researched for the best capture cards, PCs, mics, games, consoles, controllers, and so much more. I will bring all of that o you in the next few months, and I started from this, the Elgato capture card.

The Elgato capture card has a lot of features and a very good editing software too. If you are a beginner and have never recorded or edited gameplay before, the I would recommend this to you. There are thousands of different types of capture cards out there but I would say that Elgato is the best.

Here is a list of all of its features:

Inputs into/records gameplay from PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Wii U.

Supported resolutions: 1080p60, 1080p30, 1080i, 720p60, and 720p30.

Stream directly to Twitch.

Game Capture HD uses advanced hardware H.264 encoding.

Doesn’t need a lot of cables and doesn’t need a power supply.

Compact Size.

It has a feature called Flashback Recording which allows you to rewind your gameplay and record the epic moments you missed recording.

You can use any microphone connected to your PC with the Live Commentary feature and game volume lowers automatically when you talk.

Can transfer clips to any of the editing softwares you use.

One click upload to YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Overall, a very easy to use gaming capture card with lots of extremely helpful features.

Here's some gameplay I recorded from this capture card: https://youtu.be/ENwpggI2bRA (make sure to turn the resolution up to 1080p)

This Destiny video gameplay was recorded from this capture card. You can see that its extremely high quality, works great on 1080p, and it is completely lag-free.

You can buy it now at https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Systems-Capture-Definition-Recorder/dp/B00840353W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483038562&sr=8-2&keywords=Elgato+Systems+Game+Capture+HD+High+1080p+Definition+Game+Recorder

I am going to be reviewing more Gaming Gear in the future so stay tuned and don’t miss out on anything! Comment down below if you want to see something specific and I will be sure to review it.

Quad-Core: 4 threads vs 8

Hello,

I recently got myself my first desktop in years for the purpose of Twitch streaming with OBS. The processor is an i5-6400 (4 cores, 4 threads). I found a pretty good deal on another PC that has an i7-6700 (4 cores but 8 threads).

So my question is, will the processor upgrade (everything else being equal) give me a substantial boost in performance (i.e., image quality by being able to have a slower CPU Usage Preset (my current best is @faster w/ 720p 48fps) and maybe even bump it up to 60fps?

As a side-note, I stream XB1 gameplay (streamed to PC via Windows 10 XBOX app and then OBS does its thing), so I don't need the PC to able able to run a game AND stream; just stream.

So I have had the game on Xbox since it came out but never put a lot of time into it until I bought an Alienware Alpha r1. It's the I7 model with 8gb of ram and I believe it's a gtx 860m.

Anyways I bought the game on steam and it runs tremendously better then the Xbox version but I've a few questions for anyone with similar specs.

I play on the default high settings with resolution at 720p (I play on an older tv 😔) and with vsync off I average about 200fps with the occasional dips here and there but still higher then 100fps. I turn vsync on though and it's a stead 60fps which I like but I get dips into the mid 30s which gets real jarring when flying around. I assumed this was just vsync being it's normal self but I noticed I get the same drops in the same situations with it off just not as nearly as drastic(what I mentioned about it staying about 100fps with vsync off)

The frame limiter works to keep it above 60fps but it doesn't stay at the fps it limits at. The 144 limit stays at 130fps and the 120 fps stays at 110. So I'm curious what going on. I've got all updates drivers and literally the only thing installed on this ATM is steam and elite lol.

Im hesitant on playing with vsync off or the frame limiter off as when it runs in the 200fps the fan on this little thing kicks into overdrive and it just worries me it'll break haha.

So I guess a tldr would be, anyone know why with fps capped at 60fps the game drops to mid 30s but runs perfectly fine when not capped?

Not impressed with HD mode, why the hype for it?

I always hear people on YouTube, on forums, on social media say how beautiful the original Xbox looks in 480p so I finally did it only to be very dissapointed. Tried multiple Xbox on multiple HDTV's same outcome.

Just wondering if I'm the only one who isn't impressed at all with "HD" mode for original Xbox games? Yes, the settings on the Xbox are correct to the mode support of the HDTV.

HD mode, especially 480p, IMHO looks absolutely horrible with jaggies everywhere, straight lines such as wires or power lines are broken instead of being solid, etc.

IMHO a Xbox games look much better on standard definition CRT's because the ever so slight natural blur of a CRT sort of acts like anti-aliasing and fixes the jaggies and power lines, wires etc look as they should.

So I'm just wondering what's with the hype and admiration some seem to have for HD gaming on the original Xbox? Please share your opinions.

Edit: I live in the USA so everything is NTSC.

Edit 2: The Xbox is not modded (yet). It's a 1.0 Xbox. I use an S-Video cable for it as thats the best the Sony Trinitron CRT TV I currently use supports.

Edit 3: I'm 36 and grew up in the CRT era so I'm a bit bias toward them however I'm perfectly aware of upscaling anything from 480i/480p will look terrible in native HDTV resolution. I'm just wondering why all those YouTubers, forum posters and social media posts claim it looks amazing when clearly it doesn't. 720p/1080i games of course do but 480p... no way.

Question about Zone 2 playback on the Denon AVR-S720W and S920W

Hey, folks. I’m thinking about upgrading to a new home theater receiver and I have a question about Zone 2 playback feature on the Denon AVR-S720W and AVR-S920W. My old receiver predates AirPlay and Wi-Fi and doesn’t have any streaming capability so this is a bit new to me, although I do have an AppleTV so I’m familiar with using AirPlay.

Q1) My first question is this. Can I use the Zone 2 playback feature to play Airplay streaming music while using the main system audio for sound from my Xbox One? What I’d like to be able to do is to use my normal 5.1 setup for playing video games, and then pull up music on my phone to stream to another pair of speakers in the same room.

Q2) My second question is about assigning the speakers. If I add a pair of speakers to my current 5.1 setup to make it 7.1, Can they work as Surround Back L&R normally, and then work as Zone 2 speakers when Zone 2 is turned on? Or will they just be turned off when Zone 2 is turned off?

Cheap computer help!

Hey, I'm a youtuber and I really need a new computer (I want a windows 10 64 bit). I would love to spend less than 400$, but I can go higher if needed (I'm a kid so I don't have a job yet). I don't really know what parts I should get. I game and record on my xbox one so I don't need a very high end computer. I think the biggest software I need is gonna be the elgato game capture software (I use the elgato capture card) and a free video editing software called shotcut. The links below will take you to the system requirements for both of those softwares. I might do light gaming on this computer, but nothing to big, just like COD: black ops 1 and Minecraft.

Elgato software: https://www.elgato.com/gaming/game-capture-hd60-s#system-requirements

Shotcut: https://www.shotcut.org/FAQ/#what-are-the-minimum-system-requirements

I do know some stuff. It needs to be at least 8 gb of RAM. It also needs to have usb 3.0 for the elgato thing to work. If I have to manually install it seperate from the computer, thats fine but remember this is my first time doing anything like this. I would love to get a SSD but it'll have to be 200 gb or higher. If that's to expensive I'll just get a usual Hard drive. My videos will be in either in 720p or 1080p, not 4k. I would also like this to be upgradeable in case I want to add more RAM or a SSD. The current laptop I have is a c55t-a5102. All of the programs mentioned above do run on this laptop, but I can only have one open at a time, and they do sometimes crash. Sorry for this being such a long post, but I really need help.

My laptop gaming experience on lenovo z5075

I thought I would share a list of playable games and frame rates that I have played through my laptop great little lappy I got a year ago from a pawn store for $200 which imo is the best price you can get for a budget gaming laptop like this note that I only tested last gen games and nothing recent. quick specs: AMD A10 7300, 8gb of sk hynix ram, 1tb, radeon R6 1gb vram, win 10

Games I've tested that are playable at high settings 720p 4x AA, vsync shadows, water effects etc enable:

Dishonored 50-60fps (game is nicely optimized ran without any hitches)

Fallout 3/new vegas 35-50 fps no mods only the NVSR studder remover (my favorite and possibly poor optimize on this list but was more playable than the console versions only had 3 crashes during the endgame)

TES Oblivion: 60 fps with some minor tweaks here and there TES Skyrim: 30-40 fps without any mods (I believe with the right settings I could get better fps in certain areas.)

The banner saga 1 and 2: 60 fps (nothing special here)

Mass effect trilogy: 40-50 fps (really smooth with the first two games, and here I was thinking it wasn't going to happen very playable, 3 did have some bad glitches during combat I came across that made my fps dip suddenly maybe it was a bad pc port or something no idea)

Doom BFG edition 30-20 fps (I think this was a little too much for my laptop and it was pretty laggy, I still played it lowest fps I got during recording was 17)

Max Panye 3: 20-40 fps (shootout were fine otherwise It was struggling to maintain 30fps at times the frames were all over the place)

Crysis: 40-45 fps (yes I can run crysis if anyone is asking lol)

Dragon's dogma: 30fps (did not think it was going to run but to my surprise it was console quality)

Metal gear rising: 20-30 fps without tweaks, with tweaks 40-60 fps (lucked out on this read up on how to get the game running on IGPUs it is possible if you can stand the lower fps compared to the xbox360/ps3)

Starcraft 2: 30-40 fps (that 40 is during small missions and no online, otherwise it was 30 and below sometimes 13fps late game)

Deadly premonition: 30fps (bad pc port shame too because I couldn't get pass the game too far without it crashing after a few hours in)

That is all I have at this moment I bought, am looking for more games that can run well on this laptop for $200 at a PS this was a steal I am glad I got it. If anyone has any recommendations let me know.

A wealth of hands-on information (including things not talked about before)

I just finished up with session one in D.C., and I tried to take note of aspects that haven't really been talked about here yet. Let's just dive right in.

First, Zelda. Damn was this disappointing. Not because the game itself is bad, far from it, but there were a few major issues with it. First off, the demo is presumably right at the beginning of the game; it doesn't just throw you into the action. Because of this, there are at least 6-8 minutes of dialog and cutscenes in a 20 minute demo. It may have even been more than that.

But what was more disappointing than that was the TV it was on. For some dumb fucking reason, they had the TV in 120hz interpolation mode. Presumably to make the shitty framerate when docked look more smooth. (This definitely explains why a lot of people thought the game ran at 60fps when playing it.) This was the E3 demo, only built for the Switch. Because of that, there were numerous framerate issues when docked. It hovered at around 25fps and dipped to 20 on frequent occassions. What was even worse was because of the TV's 120hz frame interpolation, there was at least 100-200ms of input latency that made the game feel sluggish as shit on the TV. God, it was awful.

On the plus side, it was BEAUTIFUL in portable mode. It was genuinely hard to tell that it was running in 720p, especially compared to some of the other demos I played (more on this later). It ran at a LOCKED 30fps, and was just beautiful all around. In my 20 minutes of play (more like 12 minutes amirite) I managed to complete one of the first rune puzzle room thingies. It took about 5 minutes, but I was speedrunning it. In this particular puzzle, you used Link's Gravity Gun (for lack of a better term), but I won't spoil anything else unless explicitly asked.

Onto some hardware stuff:

Holy crap, I'm sure you guys are sick of hearing about it, but this piece of tech is GORGEOUS. I mean that. It's got just a perfect weight to it - not too light, and feels ultra-high-quality. The screen is as beautiful as everyone says it is, despite only being 720p. It's vivid, bright, and sharp. Obviously I wasn't able to perform a drop test, but I did sort of press on the screen kind of hard to see what it felt like, and it didn't have really any give. I would equate it roughly to an iPad or any random smartphone. Unless they're using some crazy new type of glass, it will definitely crack if dropped from a decent height on pavement with an unlucky landing, but it's very doubtful it would crack from a drop like that if the Joy-Cons were attached. Because the back of the Joy-Con has a protruding ZL/ZR and the front has a protruding analog, and the sides are made of Nintendo's durable plastic, I absolutely feel like the Joy-Cons, themselves, will protect the Switch if they're connected to it during a fall. Pure speculation, but based on the build quality I saw, I would not expect the Switch to crack/break with a normal fall from, say, 3-5 feet.

Now let's talk about these Joy-Cons. WOW. Very surprised at how small they are and yet how comfortable they feel. I have pretty large hands, and they felt great. But let me back up. The moment I held the switch for the first time, it didn't instantly feel good. Specifically, the Joy-Cons. They felt really thin and small, and most notably the analog sticks are shorter and smaller than that of the Wii U or GameCube controller. They're almost an exact middle-ground between the Wii U analogs and the Vita analogs. That worried me in the first moments of holding the system.

Then everything just melted away once I got into Zelda. They felt fucking GREAT. I genuinely mean that. The click on the sticks was exactly what you'd expect, the travel of the sticks was short but perfectly acceptable, and the size of the Joy-Cons was just wonderful. After just a minute, I already liked the Joy-Cons waaaaay more than a Wiimote/Nunchuk, which I greatly enjoy. The buttons are exactly the same as on a N3DS, and the triggers are clicky as well. Not much travel on either of them, but it's worth noting they're both in a great position and feel just fine.

They are also incredibly durable. You can tell just by holding them. I put a ton of hand pressure on them and they were solid. Most notably, when they were attached to the Switch system itself, [NSFW] I attempted to bend them back and forth in the worst possible way, to see how much give they had when connected. The answer? NONE. I mean that. They are so ridiculously solid when connected to the Switch, that they feel like they're permanently afixed to the system itself. Somewhat amazingly, they still are able to slide out of the system with the greatest of ease.

There's a button on the back of each Joy-Con, and I quickly got the hang of pulling each one out with each hand, using my thumb on the side of the top of the Switch for leverage. It is worth noting that the most natural place to put your thumb for leverage when removing the left Joy-Con is RIGHT on the power button. I anticipate people accidentally pressing the power button a lot when removing the left Joy-Con. I'm sure I did it, yet the system didn't go into sleep mode or anything. Presumably you'll have to hold the button down for any significant action.

The Pro Controller. Before I went in, I was talking to someone who had already gone to one of these events, and he said he hated the pro controller because it was too big and felt cheap. I mostly disagree. First off, it's extremely comfortable. Certainly not too big. Roughly the same size as an Xbone controller, maybe a bit wider. The buttons are much different. Instead of being clicky, they're squishy, exactly like the Wii U gamepad and most Nintendo console buttons.

The d-pad was the same. I read earlier about someone who really hated the d-pad, for various reasons, like it traveled too far and then "clicked". I don't know if he had a defective controller or something, but I didn't get that at all. More or less, it feels like the d-pad on the Wii U pro controller. It's squishy with good travel, and it rocks in the way that you'd expect a Nintendo d-pad to. Also, the sticks were bigger than the sticks on the Joy-Cons, pretty much identical to the Wii U pro controller. They were fine and felt great.

Someone had asked me about the fan in the Switch, and whether or not it's loud and blows hot air. Well, it was impossible to hear even when I held it directly to my ear, but it was also ridiculously loud at the event. If I had to guess, judging by the amount of air it was blowing out at the speed it going, I would absolutely assume the fan to be next-to-silent. I roughly measured the amount and temperature of the air being blown out at the beginning of the Zelda demo (before play had started), during, and at the end. It didn't seem to change one bit. It constantly blew out a warm air. Definitely not hot, like a video card, but warm. Most importantly, it didn't seem to increase the amount of air circulating during prolonged gameplay. Again, these were not ideal circumstances for testing, though.

Oh, and the HD Rumble was pretty cool. I didn't try 1 2 Switch (yet), but Skylanders made use of the HD Rumble, as did Zelda. So, don't expect "big rumble" like a GameCube controller or N64 rumble pack. It's far more subtle and distinct. Almost identical to the haptic feedback in the iPhone 7, only you can tell there are multiple haptic modules throughout the controller to give you that feedback in different places. It was pretty cool, overall. I have a lot of hope for it in the future.

Now, the games:

Here's what I played. Zelda (we already talked about that), Skylanders, Sonic Mania, ARMS, and Street Fighter 2.

So, Street Fighter 2. There's nothing about the game I really need to talk about, everyone here surely knows what to expect. One thing to note is that I played it with a pro controller and used the d-pad, and I had absolutely no trouble performing special attacks like the Shoryuken and Hadoken. In my opinion it's the best way to play that game, though I wasn't able to try with just the Joy-Cons.

Skylanders. I don't personally care about this game, but it ran fine. Seemed like 30fps - looking back on it I didn't really take mental note. I did however mess around with the touch screen, and it was responsive (even though the UI wasn't great, overall in the game). Even tapping tiny buttons like "B - Back" worked, not just the large selectable buttons. It's worth noting that the load times for this game were fucking atrocious. Like, at least a minute - felt like an hour.

Tapping in the amiibos - sorry, Skylander figures - was pretty simple. When you start the game, it has you select a figure. You hold it directly over the right analog stick to scan it in. It scanned immediately, and it was sort of surprising, since on the Wii U and N3DS, sometimes amiibos are a bit finicky on where you have to scan them. This was not the case - clearly the NFC reader in the Joy-Con is an upgrade to the on in the Wii U. Amiibo lovers rejoice.

Here's a new piece of information I hadn't seen anywhere. I decided to rifle around the settings of Skylanders (since the game wasn't all that interesting) and I went into Controls. In addition to a controller layout there was the option to change controller numbers, or "ports" if you will. This is a problem with older consoles with wireless controllers, notably the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. Modern consoles don't really have a problem switching "controller ports", but it's still sometimes a pain in the ass. Well...

When I went to reassign the controller number in Skylanders, it brought up a Switch UI, something that was very clearly universal across all games. It showed me what controllers were currently connected (in this case Joy-Con L and Joy-Con R) and instructed me to press L and R at the same time to assign the first player. This was instantaneous, and I noticed that while I did it, the lights on the Joy-Con Grip were flashing in a "now pairing" sort of way. After I pressed L and R, it had be press the A button to continue. Presumably, had there been a second controller connected, a pro controller or additional Joy-Cons, I would have been able to switch to first player extremely easily. Also, in this screen it seems like you can pair a currently un-paired controller with the Switch. Overall, it was incredibly fast and fluid. By far the best example of wireless port switching in ANY console to date. Very, very happy about that.

Sonic Mania was, far and away, the best game I played there. I don't mean this lightly when I say that it has the potential to be the best Sonic game ever made, and this is coming from a HUGE fan of 1-3&K. The level design was on point, the visuals were so vibrant and fluid in motion, and the music was classic Sonic. But the thing that really put it over the top is the new Drop Dash move Sonic has in his arsenal. Guys, this is a complete game changer, for real. The way it works is that when you're in the air, if you press and hold jump while in the air, you'll sort of silently "charge" up a drop dash. (The drop dash is always the same regardless of how much you charge it - you just have to hit a threshold.) It takes maybe a second or two to charge, so you can utilize it in 90% of your jumps. This will absolutely change the speedrunning meta so much. Never have I felt like I had so much control over Sonic, and so much agility in ANY of his games. I can not stress enough how fucking amazing this simple move is. I played both stages available (same as the ones in the trailer earlier demos) and they were both incredible in their own ways. I be happy to expand on this game if anyone requests more information.

Finally, there's ARMS. It seems like every impression about ARMS I read says how "it looks dumb but it's actually amazing". Well, sort of I guess. I got to play it on stage at the event, in a 4-player tournament. It was a little bit confusing - not in theory, but in execution. It's really hard to, for example, determine how much you need to twist the controller after throwing a punch to make it bend around the way you want it.

More importantly, it's hard to tell what kind of game this is. It's clear from videos and stuff that they way Nintendo is sort of marketing the game is as a "get physical, throw punches, be active" sort of "button-mashy" (or "waggle-mash", I guess) sort of way. But based on what I know and the strategy behind the game, this type of play does not translate well to how you should play it. I approached it in a methodical way, where every input was carefully calculated and distinct. My opponent (who had admittedly already played the game a few times) really was more into the "waggle-mash" style of play. I kinda got trounced. (But I still got one of those wicked cool Nintendo Switch hats!)

Perhaps I'm just terrible or was approaching it in a "competitive not party" kind of way, but those are the games I like. Let me be clear - based on my very short impression, I do NOT see this game ever being an eSport. Ever. Now I could be DEAD wrong about that, and maybe there's far more depth than what I could figure out, but it's an incredibly simple game, and in waggle mode, it feels like something I'd play on the Wii for sure.

That's not to say it's bad, because I definitely still had a ton of fun playing it. And, again, I was using motion controls, and not standard controls, so maybe that will make a dramatic difference competitively, but from what I played, there's almost no way people are going to take this as seriously as something like Smash or even Splatoon.

So that's my write-up. But wait! There's more! I'm actually also able to go to the 3rd session at 3pm EST today, so I'll have a chance to play Splatoon, 1 2 Switch, and probably a few more. So with that, if anyone has any specific questions they'd like to ask before I head back in, please do so and I'll try to get you answers!

Oh, and here's my haul for the day. :)
