The Switch's launch time is actually quite smart

At this point in time, the PS4 and the Xbox One are about 3 years old, and about everybody who wanted one has gotten one by now.

Yes, Sony and Microsoft keep releasing new models and stuff, but the average person just keeps the PS4 or Xbox One they already have, mostly because there just aren't enough differences in the PS4 Pro, Xbox One S, etc.

So imagine that you are an average PS4/Xbox One owner, and then a completely new console comes around, and it's both a handheld and a home console, and it even has games that the PS4 and Xbox One will never have. It's Christmas time, and you find yourself looking at a couple higher power versions of the console you already own, but there is also a completely new console. If you were that person, which one would you choose?

Most likely the Switch, since the Switch has features that the PS4 or Xbox One will never have, and that is what average customers look for, not "will the next games run at 4K at a super high framerate?". In fact, an average customer would probably be fine with 30 FPS 720p as long as the game is fun. Hardcore gamers might be triggered by that, but that is a different story.

Say the Switch had launched alongside the PS4 and Xbox One, people might've picked the PS4 and Xbox One over it, but the Switch is launching at a completely different time.
