My experience with the Switch in Paris

Hey everyone, I went to the Switch event in Paris yesterday and I thought I'd share my experience with you guys.

When I first watched the reveal trailer of the Switch, I was really hyped - as everybody else -, and started checking for news on this subreddit all day long. As the day of the stream was approaching, I was getting more and more hyped to the point that sometimes, I literally stopped listening to my courses at school and browsed the news instead.

When the final day came, my excitement was at its peak. I was hoping for a lot of cool games at launch such as Animal Crossing, Super Smash, Metroid and whatnot. No need to say I was a bit disappointed by the live event. The launch lineup looked very poor, and the console itself sounded too expensive for what it was. My hype was no more. I still pre-ordered the console because I thought Nintendo still had some unannounced titles for the launch, but I almost cancelled it after thinking about it twice. I didn't really feel any hype for the Switch anymore.

The same day, I got an e-mail from Nintendo that changed my mind. It was an invitation to the Switch event in Paris, where I could try the console for real. I decided to go and see for myself how the Switch was really like.

When I arrived at the event, in the Grand Palais, Paris, I immediately thought to myself "Wow, Nintendo really thought on a grand scale". Everything was perfectly organised, I couldn't wait to finally try the Switch. picture (goldengeek)

When I went back home, I felt like Nintendo gave me that magical feeling again. They did it. I had totally put things into perspective and realised how different the experience was compared to the videos I've seen.

I know a lot of people on this subreddit haven't had the chance to try the Switch yet, and I understand they might be deceived by the small amount of launch titles or even the not-so-good specs of the system compared to the Xbox One and the PS4. Well, forget about that; I'm here to tell you about my experience with the Switch and why you should stay excited. Please note this post might be a bit biased due to my excitement for the console, although I'll try to stay as neutral as possible.

Arms

This was the first game I got to try. I wasn't particularly excited for Arms when I first saw the trailer, but after trying it I'm thinking I'll probably get it once it comes out. It makes an amazing use of the Joycons: they fit surprisingly well in the hands and the motion controls are accurate - although it takes some practice to start enjoying it. I played it with a friend of mine and we had a lot of fun!

Snipperclips

A nice example of simple yet fun co-op. The shape-cutting mechanic is very intriguing. It also demonstrates the horizontal use of the single Joycon. Again, I was a bit skeptical concerning the ergonomic design when I first saw the trailer, thinking you'd need tiny hands to play with that controller. Surprisingly enough, it feels like a classic NES controller and the placement of the buttons was good.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

My favorite game at the event. I know, it's just a port with new characters, but I feel like this is the perfect game for the Switch, that you can either play online at your home or take with you to play with friends. I played it in local mode with 7 other people, just like the 3DS could do. picture (figaro)

The main difference is that the graphics were amazing and the game ran at a solid framerate, without slowdowns. I don't want to say something wrong by telling it was 60fps, but it felt like it was the case. I couldn't believe the game ran on a portable console, it was really impressive.

Splatoon 2

I had never tried this game before so it was a first for me. I'm not a big fan of it, but it was fun nonetheless. I played with the pro controller, which felt good. I was expecting to move the camera entirely with the right stick, but to my surprise it is only for left and right rotation. You aim with the gyro, by tilting the controller itself (much like on Wii U, I believe). I am super bad at this game and got spawnkilled all the time, but I can totally see why people enjoy it. Playing Splatoon with friends on the go must be really fun.

1-2 Switch

I got to try two mini-games: Ball Count and Copy Dance. Both were fun, but Ball Count was particularly impressive. It's more of a tech demo for the HD Rumble than a real game, but it's still mind-blowing. You could really feel the marbles sliding down and bump into each other in the controller. There's no word to express how realistic it feels, I guess you'll have to try it for yourself. I'm curious to see how developers will make use of that feature.

The Switch itself

I didn't get to detach the Joycons and hear that satisfying "click" sound - but, as for the system itself, it's really solid. My eyes can't precisely tell between 720p and 1080p, but the screen is very sharp even if it's only 720p, with bright colours. It is more than enough for portable gaming, considering you can dock it to switch to a bigger screen. The Switch looks better than the Wii U, even when docked; it upscales well. The Joycons are of high quality, the buttons are responsive although the triggers are digital - not analog. The touch feature was disabled, but the screen felt like a phone screen, not like the cheap Wii U one you could hardly slide your fingers on. The Switch is smaller than I thought, pretty sure it could fit in jean pockets, Joycons removed. It's also fairly thin and light.

The Switch is the most powerful portable gaming system to date, no doubt about it. I'm still wondering if Nintendo used black magic to put all of this technology in such a small device. Anyways, I'm not scared about the lineup anymore because we'll still have plenty of games at launch to fill the waiting time :)

That's all I remember. I'm more hyped than ever, waiting for my Switch to arrive on March 3rd. I'm happy Nintendo has learned from the Wii U.

Thanks for reading! And sorry for my English which might have been unpleasant to read at times.

TL;DR: I tried the Switch and it's a LOT better than what it looks. There are going to be amazing games within the first 1-2 months so you shouldn't worry about the lineup.

Keep Switching!
