A Week Later - My Review

Background:

I was a day one adopter of the PS4 when it came out. I lined up to get my box and everything, hell, I probably sank well over 2000 hours into that baby. Destiny got around 500 and that started to take its toll on it, that thing sounded like a jet taking off! I did the usual things to try and increase performance or at least mitigate the problem; popping off the top cover to be able to get to the fans and blow them out as well as installing a 1 TB (or close to it) SSD. It worked but when the Pro came out I realized I was going to need to get it so I could get away from all jet sounds.

Long story short, I have gamed in front of a monitor since MW2, mostly due to the fact that my parents were always watching TV downstairs and buying an HDMI to DVI converter was cheaper than buying me a new TV so I got used to it. The only thing I play on a TV is Xbox and that's only because Halo looks so much better on it.

Anywho, when my family asked me what I wanted for Christmas I didn't really need anything but they all offered to get me my PS4P and that was pretty cool of them. Low and behold, I ended up with on Xmas day:

  • PS4 Pro

  • AOC UC2879VF 28" 4K Monitor

  • FFXV

  • Razer Leviathan

When I mean "I got" I meant my family told me to order everything and they would just pick up the tab. Outside of the PS4P, everything was on sale or offered rebates. Both my parents aren't savvy internet shoppers like I am so it was easier to just deposit money into my bank account than for them to go deal hunting.

Enough fluff!

Installation:

First thing first was installing the previous SSD into the Pro. That was easy, as I had already prepared my USB with the OS (if you are doing this, be sure to install the right one) and slipped through that in a few minutes.

This is where I thought I hit my first hiccup. Upon starting, I was only getting output to 720p which made me rage and think I was going to be one of the few people that get that problem.

What I ended up doing was disconnecting and doing a complete shutdown and letting it sit there for a few minutes.

While this was happening I connected another device to the port (HMDI 2.0) and went into the menu to calibrate it specifically to output a 4K - 60 Hertz signal. My monitor's menu is easy enough to move around without pulling my hair out so this was a breeze as well.

Afterward, connect and fly and we are good to go! Signal came up, looked crisp as hell and set the coloring to the proper recommendations here. It isn't HDR (Don't really care for that at the moment) but the colors were still crisp and beautiful as it has over 1 billion colors (it is 10 bit).

Next was setting up the sound. This was fairly easy, connect the Optical and wham. Crisp bass and booming speakers.

The game installation and patch downloading was pretty fucking annoying though. Tip - do one at a time, it will speed it up. Between the 3 Fallout 4 DLC simultaneously taking 1 hour to individually taking about 20 minutes, just go do it one at a time.

Performance:

This is where I was a little hesitant at first.

FO4: First game I played was FO4, outside from the fact that it didn't sound like a jet was taking off whenever I went into Far Harbor, there didn't seem like a boost. Although performance has definitely improved as there is no FPS drops when having a big battle. The SSD improved loading times greatly.

FFVX. I think this is one of the most beautiful games released on a console. I ran it at 4K and it is amazing, very fucking sexy. I had read that people were getting strange artifacts and flickering when running in 4k and in about 30 hours of game time, I have yet to see anything of the sort. As per loading times, the SSD helps a lot with me seeing approximate loading times of 10-15 seconds tops as to the reported 30-45 seconds with the HDD.

BF1. Holy hell, this one scared me. It ran and loaded fast and proper but the moment I went into a game, everything dropped about 10 shades darker. Quit, turn off and restart and it was all good. Holy hell this game looks even better in 4K, and it performs like a beast. Outside of visuals, it never stuttered and please, for the love of god, install an SSD. I do not regret it. I am always the first one in the lobby which means I get to get my hands on the first pick of vehicles. This will help you out (my brother and I went HAM and went for a combined 150:10 KD on conquest)

Conclusion:

It doesn't get hot. It doesn't flicker. It doesn't checkboard or send me strange signals. It plays games and it does one hell of a job at it and I couldn't be happier with this monster being the new head of my desk for console gaming. It's only been a week but I am already looking forward to the memories that are going to be made in this. I have a decent backlog of games that I will likely hit as well as a fresh copy of TLoU that I have ever yet to play (I know, I know) does anyone else have any recommendations for the next 3 weeks of game time?

Thanks for reading and any questions I will be happy to answer.
