How to setup sounds with new TV+Consoles combo ?

Trying to figure out how to smartly use my current home theater speakers ( and possible receiver, if still possible ).

Gear: Samsung 65KS9800US/65KS9500EU, PS4 (HDR), XBOX One, Using the TV's own tuners, so no tuner box. 5.1 surround speakers ( 5x Old JBL's from way back ) + Sony STR-DG720 receiver from ~2009

So, how to fix up the sound system so i could get 5.1 sounds atleast on watching movies, when the sources are Netflix (TV's app), Plex media server (Home NAS, TV's app), USB stick (TV's app). On consoles i think i mostly use headphones with mic so getting 5.1 from these isnt essential, but nice if that would work too.

So is the best choice (in the end) to upgrade receiver to HDMI 2.0A (for PS4 HDR pass through ?) supported model, guessing around in the 500€ range ? Attach all to the receiver, then last out to the TV ?

OR attach all to TV's connection box and then run sounds with ARC port to receiver ?

Bit lost here how to get the best out of my setup, keeping HDR etc working and so it would be to control without needing 5 different remotes. :) I will be using the current receiver at least i find a good sale on a new one, so not upgrading that right now.

Thank you in advance for suggestions.
