[tech] Brand new Xbox one S keeps shutting off

I am writing this post for my sister who recently upgraded to an Xbox one S from her 360. She called and has asked for help as i am an avid gamer myself and have in the past found solutions or answers towards small problems with many consoles.

I've done everything within my general knowledge of trying to trouble shoot the basics of what might be the problem but everything i've suggested hasn't "fixed" her issue.

It's a brand new Xbox one S she picked up on thursday. She is using a 6-yr old Toshiba LCD 720p 60Hz television.

  • I made her check to see if the XB1 S is up to date on system updates. It is. Last update was yesterday at around 12:00pm.

  • resolution is compatible, set to 720p and 60Hz.

  • all settings for automatic shut off for all "apps" (tv, cable, etc) are off.

  • finally, had her do a hard system reset.

After all this the Xbox one S still randomly (there does not seem to be a set timeframe it shuts off on, however, it does not stay on longer than an hour) shuts off.

I am posting this here in hopes someone may have a good understanding of the XB1 (possibly the S) and have other solutions. If none can be found then it's off to customer support who will likely ask her to do everything we've already tried which will just end with them suggesting she bring it in for repair. Likely, she is just going to try to return it for a refund for another.
