Not really sure what happened, but I thought I would let everyone know of my experience if someone has the same issue.
I have a Hisense 4K TV (no HDR). I could not, for the life of me, get Netflix to play in 4K. Hard resets, system resets, etc. I tried House of Cards, Breaking Bad, and a handful of other titles (right stick button to see video info). I even tried the Netflix test titles. No matter the title, Netflix didn't play past 1080p (I've had the UHD Netflix package for a year now).
I went out, and I bought Batman v. Superman 4K UHD Blu-Ray. I put it into the Xbox One S, and I played the movie. I didn't change any settings or anything. It was set to 4K resolution at 8-bit. I didn't change any TV settings, there was no firmware update for the TV or Xbox, there wasn't anything different.
After playing BvS (you can verify it is playing in 4K by finding the 'i' icon in the menu), Netflix worked in 4K. Every title mentioned above worked in UHD when it was supposed to do so.
I did a hard reset to see if it would survive that. It did. Netflix has worked perfect after playing the UHD Blu-Ray.
Edit: I just wanted to clarify a couple things.
- The Netflix app on the Xbox advertised titles as UltraHD 4K (which only happens if all the hardware supports it).
- Absolutely no settings were changed (by me) between Netflix only playing at 1080p and 2160p. That means the TV, sound bar, and Xbox.
- I didn't have the Blu-Ray Player app installed until I played the Blu-Ray, so it's possible that this app is necessary for 4K video playback.
- I didn't try any other apps after Netflix started to work, but before 4K started to work, YouTube was tagging appropriate videos as 4K, but it only played back at 1080p.
- I saw this in other threads. I have the correct Netflix subscription, and it has worked with UltraHD for a year on my TV app.
- Before Netflix worked, it never moved past 1080p. Now, it will change quickly between 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p as appropriate.
