TV flashes/flickers from Roku home screen to black screen whenever I switch from 720p to 1080p

We recently got a new TV (65" Vizo HD) and have an older Roku stick that has always worked fine until now. Whenever I try to switch it from 720p to 1080p the TV screen goes haywire like it can't deal with 1080p, but it works fine with the Amazon Fire stick and Xbox 360 on 1080. Eventually it stabilizes itself after 5-7 minutes and we can watch stuff, but it's super annoying. I am thinking about buying the latest and greatest Roku. The Fire stick works great but cannot handle .mkv files or Dolby 5.1.

Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be a faulty HDMI cable? The stick plugs directly in to the HDMI slot on the TV, so I would probably have to get a new one if that is what it is. I really don't want to dish out 80 bucks for a new one, but if it's the only way to get this working I guess I will have to. Thanks!
