1080p Gaming for grandmother and our Saturday Get-Togethers

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

  • I managed to get my 81 year old grandmother into playing video games with an Xbox One in May of last year. She's just your classic old British woman, and it was rather unexpected that she took an interest in games. I think the graphics of modern games provided an easy entry point for her, so now I go over to her house every Saturday and play some games. I had been using an Xbox One, but transporting it every week for 13 months has damaged the hard drive. I've had a little Intel NUC kit that I built for her to check email on over there, and we've been using that to survive off of Skyrim (720p, low settings with performance mods, 30FPS) and Shovel Knight for the last 3 Saturdays. We need a new system, and she likes the Xbox One S a lot (We watched E3 this year together), but for $300 I feel like it may not be a perfect solution. She was willing to pay for it, but now I've decided to match that from my salary so we can get a nicer, $600 gaming PC, the reason being she loves open RPGs and I want us to be able to play The Witcher and Skywind at 60FPS together. I would really appreciate the help, since her and I don't get to do a lot else due to her bad knee, and Saturday has become my favorite day of the week decapitating bandits with my Nana.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

  • Around $550-600 USD

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

  • As soon as possible

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

  • Just the Tower and the OS, and maybe a wireless gamepad recommendation

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

  • United States, Georgia, and my university is literally 1 mile from a Microcenter.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

  • I can use the Microsoft Mouse 4000 and 200GB M.2 SSD from the NUC if needed.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

  • Nah. This'll sit in a nice open cavity behind the TV, but I don't want it toasting the cable box in there all the same.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

  • Ideally, I'd love a GTX 1060 or something comparable. Not super interested in VR, since it's still expensive and in an infant stage, but I cannot deny that the thought of my grandmother playing on a Vive is enticing enough to get a future-proof GPU.

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

  • I really don't care about design, as long as performance is good for ~$600

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

  • Windows 10 Home if possible

Extra info or particulars: not a thing. Thanks for the help, guys.
