With the the PS4.5 and the Xbox1.5 on their way I want to repost a reminder to the peasants.

I posted this on PCMR about nine months ago.

With the new half-gen console releases coming I am seeing the same, repeating, peasantry vomit being spewed forth (PS4.5 will do 4K in VR!) I thought reposting this would be a good reminder to us all.

Once again, get ready for the merry-go-round of shattered peasantry dreams. Or, in other words, "Those that do not study history are doomed to repeat it."

The Peasantry Truth of why 30fps is superior.

I remember that only a few years ago the peasants were claiming the Xbox One and PS4 would be 1080p/60fps. Id read it many times. That was the new standard. It was set in stone.

Then, closer to their release, it all changed. The truth started coming out. The next generation of consoles wouldn't run at 1080/60. Developers went into damage control and changed the narrative, declaring that 30fps was superior... and all the peasants instantly switched beliefs.

So, I did some history searching...

Feb 2013, the week of the PS4 announcement, Pachter and GTTV announce "Games Will Run in 1080p at 60fps".

Pachter confirmed with them that the PS4 can run games at 240fps, the simple reaction after saying it can is "why would we want to run games at 240fps?" There is also the whole "how much can the human eye really see" when a game is running at 240fps—it's scientifically proven that in FPS, we can't actually process what we are seeing as fast as it's going. It doesn't necessarily make sense outside of "times when the performance dips". When you run a PC game at over 100fps, the nice part isn't how fast it's running, but that when things get hectic, it only drops to 40fps, which means we visually can't notice any slowdowns.

It was all but confirmed here that games on the PlayStation 4 are going to run at 1080p while be locked at 60fps. This means there will be no frame rate drops, as 60fps will be the locked in standard.

"Pachter thinks games will run at Crysis 2 PC level. While Crysis 2 on the PC at max settings does likely look better than Crysis 3 on the PS3, it does a telling job of showing that console wise, the PS3 may not be a quantum leap over what we currently have."

"Locked in at 1080p with 60fps is a vast improvement over the inconsistencies of the seventh generation."

Some peasant comments:

"I sure hope that 60fps 1080p will be the minimum for the next gen consoles, it would only be right after all this time."

"Lol crysis 2. Crysis 2 was built for consoles in mind and not the pc. It was very much limited in that department."

"Wait... Is this article saying we can't discern a drop from 100 to 40 fps?"

"Yes, because the human eye can't process that many frames in the first place. Science."

"Exactly. It's just too high for the human brain to perceive the difference. Above 60 fps, it's all the same."

"As I understand, the human eye can't see difference above 60, and the PS4 won't drop below that. It says in the article the PC drops from 100 to 40, but the PS4 will be locked in at 60 (which means it won't go below that)."

The 1080/60 claim was set in stone. It was the coming standard.

But mid 2012, months before Patchers claims, the Sony PS4 announcement and any console spec releases, John Carmac claimed:

"Unfortunately, I can pretty much guarantee that a lot of next-gen games will still target 30 fps."

"Currently, the only gaming platform that is able to provide gamers with constant 60 FPS gaming is the PC platform. It seems that the PC platform will be the only choice for those that wish to pursue a 60 FPS standard."

But the peasants refused to listen.

Even this towards the end of 2013:

"The 1080p/60 fps combo has been a promise made by many developers at the beginning of the previous generation, Xbox 360, PS3.

That’s why it’s not so surprising to see many gamers disappointed by the fact that such a promise won’t be largely fulfilled even at the beginning of this upcoming generation."

The peasants keep getting lead by carrots, only to be given potatoes, which they end up claiming taste just like carrots!

The next gen fall out!

"First, we have the XBOX One "facts" website where Microsoft lists 1080p/60fps as something the XBOX One will do like it is commonplace, and yet we are finding out it is the exception not the rule. We hear Microsoft touting how great Forza 5 looks at 1080p/60fps at launch, Yet every single title since is at best 720P or 900P at 60 fps. We hear from Albert Penello, Microsoft Director of Project Planning, and looking at 1080p/60fps benchmarks is a waste of time."

"Microsoft stated even before launch 1080p/60fps. I purchased the XBOX ONE based on those credentials those facts as they posted."

"My old PS3 looked as good as the Xbox One on games like Call of Duty... where's the Hi Res we were promised?"

Then the peasant acceptance begins:

"As with any launch games the consoles graphics potential are not truly shown. As time goes on and programmers learn the systems the games become better and better."

"Microsoft states in their "Get the facts' link that the XBOX ONE will do 1080P/60fps but we are quickly learning that is going to take either developers possibly squeezing everything possible out of the XBOX ONE or cloud computing."

"Give it time for developers to get to grips the the xb1 hardware. It's still early days. eventually more and more games will get 1080p at 60hz."

Then Gamespot do a 'Reality Check' video. "Do we need 60 FPS on PS4 and Xbox One?", changing the narrative. And its eaten up by the peasants:

"Not every genre favors that high frame rate. Racing sure. Simulators sure. MMO's perhaps. But characters on screen, like in AC or other 3rd POV titles, appear to look so fake, like really bad movie CGI because there are no small nuances -- muscle and facial reactions -- that a developer can capture with just coding.

Not to mention how jerky they feel, almost as if the characters have been sped up. I'd say 30 frame rate is perfect. Maybe 45 would be better, but 60 is too high. It's like movies captured at 48 frame rate; it might better render vast landscapes, but between close camera character interaction, it feels unnaturally quick, almost sped up."

"30 FPS is all you need. 60 FPS starts to make me feel sick with too much motion. After a while it will catch on to you."

"There is no difference (between 30fps and 60fps) just like PS4 & PC graphics!"

You only need to search for articles from around the second half of 2014, like this one: Does Xbox One and PS4 game resolution really matter?

And we all know the rest.

A peasant is clearly lying to themselves. Refusing to accept that they were conned, again, into buying a next gen console under the promise of better graphics, higher resolutions and more frames.

And this glorious comment to finish with:

Just convince the console people that 1080p and 60hz are bad, and all is good.

And peasants wonder why we poke fun at them.
