First to set the right context and frame of mind to have this discussion in, bear with me it has a purpose.
Peasant - One who idolizes, sympathizes, defends, or otherwise shills for Sony and Microsoft and their consoles. One who spews peasant 'facts' may also fall into peasantry. Such 'facts' include claims about 30FPS being adequate, 720p being adequate, and other console marketing lies. See /r/PCMasterRace/wiki/consolepeasants.
The definition of a peasant from the wiki.
Can you guys agree that a peasant is someone who rationalises things that work against their own interests out of some sort of misguided brand loyalty? (to MS or sony or whomever)
We call someone a peasant when they believe that low framerates, a lack of options, arbitrarily paying for multiplayer , having proprietary accessories, lack of backward compatibility etc are a good thing and that it wouldn't be much better to not have to deal with these things.
So with that in mind, can we talk about gsync? (with an open mind, without being defensive about which brand is best or without trying to rationalise our own choices and purchasing decisions, let's leave that to the peasants shall we?).
Let's distance ourselves from marketing, from our investments (monetary, time or emotional). Let us ask what is best for US, the gamer , the consumer.
Gsync is an attempt from nvidia to corner us into buying their brand for the lifespan of our monitor, instead of being able to make a choice based on the merit of the gpu alone.
It effectively makes the monitor semi proprietary, because let's be realistic who is going to pay 500-800 euros for a gsync monitor and then not feel bad about not being able to use that feature they spent so much money for after they pick an AMD gpu at their next upgrade point.
Meanwhile we have vesa making adaptive sync a standard for display port 1.2 and beyond.
We must remind ourselves that adaptive sync (amd have it as freesync in their drivers) is not a proprietary standard.
We must remember that gsync and adaptive sync are in their infancy right now, and that any quality differences between the two right now are not representative of the potential of either, and will not be a factor in their quality in the future.
I urge you to seperate either of them from the brand banner they are attached to and to think hard before you financially support the idea of proprietary hardware/accessories on pc...
There's a fork in the road ahead of us and it's only leading down two potential paths:
- You go left at the fork : Gsync monitors get enough support that nvidia sticks to them. Meaning that if you buy an nvidia gpu you will not get adaptive sync support in your drivers.
It means that if you have an amd gpu or that if an amd gpu is the no brainer better buy at any point in the future (again, set those brand loyalty feelings aside and think rationally) that you will not be able to use your gsync feature if you bought a gsync monitor.
- You go right at the fork : gsync does not get the traction nvidia wanted. Adaptive sync remains a part of the display port vesa standard. Nvidia remain free to use adaptive sync in their drivers, they WILL adopt it to be able to compete with amd on a feature level. You will never be screwed out of your variable refresh rate feature no matter which monitor or gpu brand you buy down the line.
Again, I urge you to keep any brand related feelings out of this and think about number one (yourself) and your fellow gamers.
If the spirit of this subreddit means anything at all to you then you should be rational about this and not support the kind of proprietary anti consumer things that should not exist on the open platform that is PC (and that will not exist if we don't let it).
@ "but but the one I use is a bit better than the other atm" or "I use nvidia atm anyways" or whatever other short sighted "as long as I get mine" rationalisations you may have to offer I only ask: Do our standards and the openness of the platform really come that cheaply? Are we really no smarter than a dog who you can feed a pill if you wrap it in a morsel of cheese?
Be better than that...
We can have our cake and eat it too... if we think before we act. Please don't support gsync.
edit: When you look at a ps4 and xbone and see how similar their hardware is, then you ask why you can't play xbox games on a ps4 or ps4 games on an xbox , you think "that is fucking stupid and sucks for the people who buy either of them, thank god it's not like this on PC"
When I look at a gpu and see that one brand doesn't support gsync and the other doesn't support adaptive sync I think the exact same thing... That's stupid and it's not right, and I'm not having any of it. Because I don't have to , because the PC is an open platform.
