Great camera wanted - help!

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Gsmarena

TL;DR = Recommend a phone with great camera (importance on focus/sharpness, movement, low light), must be Android, must be rootable. Europe, not US. Max screen size ~5". Much obliged!

Reddit, please help me out: I've tried to do some Internet research but camera quality is generally not the focus of reviews, or they are all hype. That's why I turn to the hive mind of Reddit. I'm counting on you!

What small and medium-sized Android phones (4-5" display) have really great cameras?

  • Max 5" display - the Nexus 6/S6/Note 4/LG G4 are too large in physical size.
  • No contract preferred; we're in Austria.
  • Price range: less is more :-) but even €300 is stretching it.

Details:

The wife and I have Android phones and use them to take pictures of our small kids. The sad thing is, the photo quality isn't all that great. A guest took some awesome photos of our kids today with his iPhone 6 - we were absolutely blown away! We realize with horror that all we have of our kids are "potato quality" photos.

Wife has a small Samsung (similar to S3 mini) and I have a Nexus 4. We're happy with the devices as such so we don't need huge upgrades, but we really want better cameras - if that means flagship models, we'll have to consider the expense.

It seems to me the most interesting ones are the obscure(?) Mi 4 and the OnePlus One, but it's difficult to find actual and comparable results.
