[Help] DVR gave out in a greasy environment. Suggestions for repair options or best value replacements (and grease protection)

I'm new to commercial CCTV installation, and i didn't have access to tech support tonight, but I frequent reddit, and figured there had to exist a sub for me. You guys didn't disappoint!

A friend asked me to figure out what was wrong with his CCTV system (a Samsung kit, SDH-C5100). Everything was working except the DVR (SDR-C5300N) which was unresponsive, and everything was covered in a layer of, you guessed it, grease (it was mounted on a shelf near the kitchen).

I'm looking for info on three things. I've taken apart broken Xboxes to clean the dust off for friends, fixing them... Can the same be done for a DVR?

Second, If it needs to be replaced, are there good alternatives that are less expensive? We could order the same kit again from Samsung ($699), or get it refurbished from Newegg ($399), but all we need is the 16ch analog DVR with remote viewing and network capabilities.

Thirdly, is there steps I can take to protect the DVR in the future? Would installing in an enclosure help (I can install it farther away from the kitchen, for one).
