I have had my G15 3070 for about a year now. It is a great machine for both Linux and Windows. I think it has more power than a PS5 or XBox Series X also.
As great as it is, i actually thought about moving to Apple ecosystem to simplify my life (less troubleshooting or config file or registry tweaks to get things optimal) and i would just upgrade every couple years and sell the old devices.
I got mine for $1799 after tax, so about the best recent price at Best Buy recently, before tax.
They are selling on eBay for up to $1600 used. eBay takes 18% cut so that would leave me with $1300.
I do really like the laptop and think it is one of the best over the past year+ in x86 land, even to this day
So I am thinking of sticking with it as my daily driver laptop, since it would serve as a gaming machine (wont need to have a $500 Xbox Series X or PS5) which is true 4k gaming rather than upscaled. Yes I wont have PS5 exclusives but Xbox Game Pass gives me console game options.
So that is giving me better graphics and saving me from having a separate $500 console.
In addition, I hear the G15 3070 is a decent mining laptop so if I were to let it run overnight and whenever else not in use, it seems that i could make around $60/mo if not more?
So if i were to consider not having to buy a $500 gaming console and also having the laptop make money over the course of say 12 months, at $60/mo, that would be $720/yr.
I would be getting my money's worth by keeping it.
But someone had left a comment for me once that seemed to imply mining wi dow might be good for like 6 months until it closes. Not sure what he meant by that.
Is there still a Window to mine and make the aforementioned amount per month for 12 more months, and is Ethereum still the best option for time and resources spent?
If i keep the G15 I would continue using Fedora Linux host and spinning up Win VM with 3070 passthrough for gaming and video editing either in same VM or native Linux using Resolve.
I just know there will be more tweaking always involved and time spent getting things working as desired and a 10%+ performance hit on battery vs moving to a Mac, but maybe it will be worth it for the freedom and savings.
Could someone chime in on mining and whether it will still be viable amd have same profitability over the next 12 mos?
Once the laptop gets long in the tooth to be my daily driver anymore, i can still use it as a gaming rig, and superior console replacement for years.
This vs a Macbook and Ps5 or Xbox Series X.
