Is it normal to earn gems by letting the animals respawn and hitting them repeatedly for easy scoring? Feels like cheating!

I hope the title sums up my confusion. And as you can tell from my usage of terms I'm very new to the game.

So I'm at the stage where the map shop just opened and I have 720 gems (coins?) worth of purchases to make after buying the compass. So I go around and I found this spot where there are 2 hedgehogs and I hit them for 4 points and then go off screen and come back to see that they have respawned. So I whack them for points again and go off screen. So I basically did this over and over again and I couldn't help but feel like I was exploiting a loophole here. But this game is so huge that maybe it's a celebrated feature, and not a bug?

I'm just looking for some context here. Is this something other players do? Is it like a not recommended approach?

Tbh I felt like it was cheap and gimmicky to score points this way. Am I right or just a noob who doesn't see the bigger picture?

Also I reached 550 points like this over half an hour and the game crashed 🤦‍♂️. I am playing this on Windows on steam, with a xbox controller attached. Not sure how common these crashes are. So annoying!
