MBA Info
- Why I want an MBA: I want an MBA, with a possible JD in certain unis, in order to transition to a career in finance. My target is restructuring or an industry group (TMT) EBs, PEs and VC, because I want to leverage my previous UK Corporate Law knowledge and I really enjoy reading case law, main reason I chose not to practice law in my home country and do business. In case I fail to achieve any of these objectives, I plan on trying corporate development directly, hopefully in TMT Games industry which is my dream end-career goal (Make $tacks in Finance for 5-10 years, then take a cushy VP/Director position at Xbox/Playstation or join a Gamescentric VC).
- Why I want one now: The main reason I want one now and not in 3 years is because I have a valid GMAT score of 720 (V41, Q48) that expires at the early of 2022, this would lower my workload to only studying for the LSAT.
- Target schools:
- Reach: Sloan R1 (MBA-Only, tech push too stronk,,) GSB (JD) R1, Booth R2, Wharton R2 (JD)
- Target: Haas R2, Ross R2, Tuck R3
- Still pretty dope: Anderson R3, Foster R3, Stern R3(JD)
Background
- Work experience: 3 Years product management at a startup, which is my country's first phone assembly factory. However, mostly dealing in software, developing revenue streams, user experience design and new feature development.
- Extra curricular and other experience: This is my weakest link, I believe. I have no ECs that would be of interest to bschools, I do bouldering and play guitar but have never done those to a performative or competitive level. My last volunteering experience was in high school, I'm woefully under-qualified in this aspect.
- Undergrad school/major: Top 50 UK ranked university, 2:2 grade due to family issues in final year. 2:1 average for all previous years and First in thesis. Law and Management major.
- Other education/coursework: Used low final grade, but high grades throughout undergrad (plus overbearing African parent's pressure) to get into a top 10 UK Uni, studying M.Sc Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Graduated with a Merit (66%), although I believe MBAs only look at undergrad GPA. Also only 1 elective away from FMVA certification by Corporate Finance Institute, probably have it by the end of the month, then just final exam. I am doing this cert because I wanted to learn modelling and I currently have an offer on the table for a job switch.
- Work Experience Possibility: As I mentioned previously, I currently have an offer lined up at an international asset manager that specialises in emerging markets (~$1.5B AUM) in my home country. This is an interesting job offer because this asset manager is becoming an instrumental partner of the government, and I cannot emphasis how important this in for African countries, careerwise. They specialise in debt financing, sovereign and corporate, as well as equity financing through ownership of interests in oil & gas and diamonds, the two most exported resources in the country. I would be working in a corporate development role, in a blend of modelling skills and day to day operations.
- Race/nationality: West African/Black
- Sex: Male
The opportunity cost of doing the MBA now is that I would lose the chance at this offer on the table. My question is whether this opportunity would make me much more attractive to top ranked bschools if I applied in 3-4 years, after working in a more finance related role. Especially considering I want to transition to IB/PE/VC and finally into Corporate Development in games/games-adjacent (Microsoft, Sony, EA, ActivisionBlizzard, etc.). Tuition costs is not an issue, please do not let it affect your judgement when giving your opinion. I have a strong financial support network and the higher ranked the program I get into, the more funding will be made available for me.
Finally would applying now only to my reach universities, which I believe I am below the threshold with my current GMAT+GPA, including the fact that the GMAT grade is 4 years old, getting rejected and then reapplying in 3-4 years with the AssMan😃experience + ECs(I swear Ill do them ok..) and saying how I changed increase my chances?
Thank you very much for your help ahead of time
