Abit of gaming history about myself.
Consumer of:
Snes
PlayStation
Xbox
PC etc etc
I've gone from being a Primary Console Consumer to Primary PC Consumer. My reasoning for this came down to software and technology aswell as enhanced performance within the Gaming Industry.
So it's fair to say I've gone through each generational stage of every modern console that has released.
So. Xbox created Xbox Game Pass. A revolutionary way of trying and playing games on Xbox, PC and Mobile Devices. A great alternative for Gamers to play the games they enjoy on more devices.
Having been on the insider program for both Windows and Xbox, I've seen first-hand the development of Xbox Game Pass. It's improved alot. Especially Xbox Cloud Gaming. The latency has definitely improved.
However, there's a major flaw which I feel most Xbox Gamers have forgotten about. Even though almost everything in my household is firmly digital now, I still own every digital product (Movies, Music etc etc. I don't pay for Subscription Packages). Meaning in 5 years time, if I ever wanted to go back to a game or movie I absolutely enjoyed (I did this with The Wolf Among Us), I can simply install it and play it again because I own the product.
Here's the Major Flaw for Xbox Game Pass. If you enjoyed a game and wanted to return to it, maybe there was a big patch or a big update, and the game was de-listed from Xbox Game Pass, you'd have to either buy the Game, or you just won't be able to play that game again.
It's not just about returning to a game either. It's about memories and looking back at your collection. Just think. Let's say you've had Game Pass for the next 5 years. And that's your Primary way to play your games. You don't own any of those games. Not only that, Xbox Game Pass could easily change or stop in the future. You wouldn't have a Gaming Collection anymore.
For me personally, Game Pass is a great alternative. However, in my opinion, it should never be the Primary choice of how you play your games.
Lets talk about the Package Game Pass offers. I'll do this in GBP because I live in England.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs £11.99 per month. Rounded up and you're paying £144.00 per year. Times that by 5 years, and you're looking at £720. For products which you don't own.
Sure you can play and enjoy the games that are offered on Game Pass, but you don't own the products. Nor does Game Pass offer DLC's within that package. You still have to buy the DLC's if you want to play the extra content.
I pay on average £150 per year for Games. That's usually 4 great AAA Games on PC (because games on PC are cheaper). That's £750 for the next 5 years. £30 more than a Game Pass Subscription. In which I own all my products and can return to whenever I like. 20 Great games.
So in the end. It all comes down to personal preference and your own life situation.
I believe buying your games upfront and supporting the Gaming Studios directly is the best option for the Gaming industry. Having an Xbox Game Pass Sub Package not only means a consistent amount of money going out of your bank every month, it also means that money is going nowhere because you don't own any of the products you pay a monthly sub for.
