I made a huge mistake.
Entire last generation, I couldn’t stand 30fps games.
I dreamed of the day every game would be 60fps standard. I hated on the Xbox One X having to choose between better graphics OR better frame rate. Call me greedy, but I want both. The choice would stress me, having to choose. I’d flip between both and be frustrated I couldn’t have it all.
I love crisp 4k, but also 30fps in my eyes just doesn’t look right. Forza Horizon 3 is such a lovely game, but so much less fun for me than Forza Horizon 4 simply by having 30fps less than its sequel.
So, the Series X and PS5 generation starts.
60fps is finally pretty much standard!
It looks PERFECT to my eyes. Finally! 60fps, in 4k, as pretty much standard. Dream come true.
But some games - Ori, Dirt 5, and today, Tony Hawk 1+2, they all offer 120fps as an option IF you lower the resolution as a trade off.
So I give it a try. And I cannot see the difference. I just can’t see it. They look identical in frame rate. Slightly worse in resolution.
But I give it a chance for a whole day on a couple of games. I heard it had better control response so was worth a days experimentation.
Then I switch back....
Oh dear.
I can now see the difference.
Especially in Tony Hawk, I can’t help but see the jerky movement as I turn tight corners. It’s now totally, 100% noticeable, and 60hz looks really quite bad in comparison to 120hz. I couldn’t see it before, but now I can and I can’t un-see it.
Before I did this, I WAS happy with 60fps. Very happy!!
But now after a while with 120fps, I can totally see the difference.
I can’t go back. So I’m now, once again, I’m stuck between choosing between better graphics or better frame rate. And stressing over the choice.
This sounds like a joke post - and it certainly is - but at the same time... it kinda isn’t! If you worry about the choice between graphics and performance - sincerely, go for 60hz 4k and please don’t ever try 120hz, as you likely find 60hz fine and you don’t know what you are missing. Once you try 120hz, something which was perfectly fine (great even) seems so inferior.
If you try 120hz you’ll not see it at all at first. It seems impossible to perceive. But later, you can’t go back. The loss of it is what you notice.
Disaster!
Guess I’ll wait for the Xbox Generation Series XYZ 720 or whatever nutty name Microsoft give it, and stress over 4k240fps or 8k120fps.
Edit: if it wasn’t 100% clear this is obviously layered with sarcasm and satire, use 120hz if you can and wish! But honestly I’m not joking that once I tried it I personally honestly wish I didn’t, because 60hz used to look perfect before I knew what was missing! Maybe I’ll try and go back to 4k60hz and hopefully over time forget what 120hz looks like...
