Should Microsoft buy a Japanese publisher?

With Microsoft recent's takeover of Bethesda, and their CEO going on record saying they're going to buy more, there has been a lot of speculation about Microsoft's next move. In this post I'd like to have a quick look at the numbers, and speculate about what Microsoft's next acquisition could be. I'll be focusing on Japanese publishers, partially because of the Sega rumours floating around, but also because I think acquiring a Japanese publisher would make a lot of sense for Microsoft.

To begin, some numbers:

This list is a selection of publicly traded Japanese publishers with their current enterprise value. At the time of writing, Microsoft has $136,527,000,000 cash on hand. In other words, if they really wanted to they could in fact afford to buy this entire list. However, in practice this obviously won't happen due to it not making financial sense. Furthermore, the enterprise value alone doesn't tell the whole story. When taking over a company, the acquirer will almost always pay a premium on top of the enterprise value, because the board of directors and shareholders of the target company must agree to the takeover. Thus, in reality Microsoft would be paying at least 20% more than the numbers in the table show.

Next, let’s go over the companies in this list and see which one would make the most sense.

Bandai Namco:

+Owns many different IP’s: Ace combat, Dark Souls, Tekken, Tales of, etc.

-Highest EV on the list.

-The majority of their titles already appear on xbox.

-Significant parts of their income come from non-video game sources such as toys and amusement parks.

conclusion: probably not a buy.

Square Enix:

+Has the most popular JRPG IP’s on the planet.

+Has a very cozy relationship with Sony, meaning that buying them would let Microsoft snatch away some key time exclusives

+Square owns Eidos Interactive, the developer responsible for Deus Ex and Tomb Raider

+Has a succesful MMO, another genre microsoft is currently lacking in.

-Second highest EV on the list

-Said relationship with Sony might make a takeover more difficult.

-Also involved in arcades via ownership of Taito.

Conclusion: Would make an excellent yet expensive acquisition, assuming they can make the deal happen.

Capcom:

+Monster Hunster exclusivity might be capable of single handedly carrying the Xbox brand to relevancy in japan

-Most of their games already make it to Xbox/windows anyway.

-high EV.

Conclusion: Would be an excellent addition to microsoft’s lineup, but not sure if Capcom would be the most sensible option here.

Koei Tecmo:

+Snatching Nioh away from Sony exclusivity would be a win.

-High EV.

-Complex business structure with lots of non-video game divisions.

-Few popular IP’s.

Conclusion: Not a sensible acquisition.

Konami:

+Metal Gear!

-Probably makes more money from Yu gi oh cards and pachinko than video games these days.

Conclusion: No.

Sega Sammy Holdings:

+Absolutely staggering range of IP’s

+Owns Atlus, snagging Persona away from Sony would be a huge win.

+Has a large amount of dev studios, including some that specialize in PC games such as Amplitude and Relic.

+Has a history of working with Microsoft.

+Out of the major Japanese third parties, their EV is the most affordable.

-Sega Sammy holdings also has quite a few non-video game businesses.

Conclusion: It doesn’t surprise me that there are so many rumours about Sega. They look like they’re by far the best buy on this list. If I was put in charge of Microsoft tomorrow, I would absolutely go for it.

Kadokawa:

+Owns FromSoftware!

-That is also the only reason I even bothered to include them, the majority of their business isn’t actually video games.

Conclusion: Calling them to see if they’re not interested in selling From would be an excellent move, but buying the entire company is a big no.

Falcom:

+Specializes in JRPGs, an area Microsoft is sorely lacking in.

+Most of their output is Sony-exclusive, taking that away would be a win.

+EV isn’t even 100 million.

-Niche. Would Ys and trails fans be willing to make the jump to Microsoft’s ecosystem?

Conclusion: Maybe? It does strike me as worth trying, but perhaps for a company as huge as Microsoft niche developers like Falcom aren’t worth the effort.

Nippon Ichi:

+Cheapest on the list

-Their biggest IP is as far as I know Disgaea, which doesn’t seem to be a very big seller.

-A lot of their value seems to come from their publishing activities, which isn’t very useful to microsoft. Conclusion: Probably not worth, even with their low EV.

Tried Windows 10 built in wireless display casting feature (Miracast) to connect Ryzen+Radeon PC to laptop as a second screen (project as extended), displays only pure green screen on laptop.

First time posting here, so apologies if I'm doing this wrong.

Summary of Issue

Attempted to use Windows 10's built in wireless display casting feature (Miracast) to connect Ryzen+Radeon based PC to Intel+Nvidia based laptop to use as second screen. Laptop screen shows up correctly on connect panel, connects successfully. However, laptop displays only green screen. Mouse cursor still visible. Windows such as Edge browser windows can be dragged into second display area and is still interactable, just not displaying properly due to green pure green screen.
As far as my searches go on google and on the subreddit, I haven't found a similar case so I was wondering what may be the problem here. Thanks in advance to all replies!

Steps to Reproduce

1. Ensure Wireless Display feature is installed from windows settings (Optional Features) on both devices
2. Set "Projection to this PC" settings in windows settings to allow projection to both devices
3. Connect PC (Bluetooth 4.2) and Laptop (Bluetooth 4.1) together via Bluetooth
4. WinKey+P on main PC, select extend, click on connect to a wireless display at the bottom
5. Wait for Laptop to show itself on the connect page
6. Click to connect, enter pairing code and connect
7. Observe green screen on laptop display. Windows cursor shows and is displayed correctly. Nothing else can be seen. Windows could be dragged into the second display area but is not displayed correctly.

Steps taken to remedy the issue/troubleshoot

1. Windows update check on both devices -> No new updates
2. Install all Intel and Nvidia updates on laptop -> installed but didn't resolve issue
3. Turn off all Radeon Software Settings -> did not help
4. Attempted all the steps to reproduce on a friends Intel+Nvidia based laptop (I believe it was an intel i7 6700HQ + GTX 960m combo) -> Works as intended, so I'm fairly confident it's something to do with my PC

Xbox Series - S - It would be a great 1440p console, but...

If you're sold on the idea of 1440p gaming? I wouldn't get too excited.

Xbox One - X has demonstrated that the level of 1440p support we receive, on the Xbox, is only as far as 1440p native display support. The majority of games, if any, DO NOT support / output 1440p. This has been a problem for 3 years now. Developers seldom choose to support 1440p...this is odd because the Xbox One - X has a great and capable 1440p GPU and NEVER should have been forced into 4K.

Case-in-point? Consoles have always had this problem. With vendors refusing to believe that a LARGE part of the community runs standard PC monitors to game off of...and not necessarily 40-72 inch TVs (try easily getting one of these into a dorm) with standardized timings and only a handful of resolutions (480, 720, 1080 and 4K resolution). So while you can definitely go into the Xbox settings and set your display to 1440p? Your games will still be forced to upscale 1080p to your 1440p display, which looks hella ugly, or VSR/ downsample 4K output onto 1440p, which does look nice. As far as native 1440p? That is up to the developers to throw in and they are not incentivized to do so.

Xbox One X sales are rocketing on amazon, because a lot of people are thinking they are buying the new Xbox Series X for their kids, which they are not.

Why the Series X name? Why not the Xbox Ultra, or Xbox 720, or Xbox Spectre? Anything but something too similar to Xbox One X???

I need help with parsing the json file I get back from using the youtube api. I have no code to show because I have no idea how I would do this.

Any help, including pointing me to self learning resources would be fantastic.

The naming scheme is going to be a little different than what people initially thought.

There will definitely be the RX 6660 XT, RX 6880 XT and the RX 6990 XT (No RX 6770 XT apparently, perhaps they are leaving that out for later? It may be around 16-18 TFLOPS so between a RX 6660 XT and a RX 6880 XT).

Note that there is now an infinity cache to make up for that lack of GDDR6X memory, which according to the details I have looked at, should even make it performing better than GDDR6X, of course if AMD was able to provide both, it might have outperformed NVIDIA's cards in terms of internal memory speeds and the delivery of data like textures.

Also note that RDNA 2 is based on 7nm unlike RDNA 3 which's process is going to be 5nm.

I am going to share specifications of each GPU (bus width of every card is unknown and only assumable and the cards may be subject to change but this is definitely the information I could extract from the unreleased driver).

As it looks like, the TFLOPS are mostly lower than the RTX 3080's raw performance. Though the RX 6880 XT should beat the RTX 3070, these values may still change but so far AMD's first generation of cards that support raytracing will indeed be better (and most likely cheaper) than the first generation NVIDIA cards (RTX 2000-Series). The boost clocks are indeed as high as stated and were taken directly from the information of the unreleased adrenalin driver.

Note that they may still be subject to change but so far there is not that much time left for the cards specs' to change so these are most likely going to be identical once AMD launches them.

Photo editing first, CAD second, gaming third

I currently have a Lenovo Yoga 720 (i7, 8GB, 256GB SSD) with an external 4K monitor (LG 27UL600). I’ve been working more from home (for obvious reasons) and have recently upgraded my camera to a Sony A7Riii. Working with the 42MP files is fairly painful on the laptop, especially when doing focus stacking with macro shots. This is the main driver for a move to a desktop PC. Secondly working from home: I frequently work from home now and use Creo Parametric (3D modelling), the Lenovo struggles with that as well. Lastly, I would like to slowly get back into gaming as the kids are growing up and game themselves!

I’ve been slowly buying some parts over the last month or so and I’m fully aware of the 2 upcoming AMD events next month. I’ve settled on a Ryzen build but I’m having difficulty settling on a MB, CPU (currently Zen 2 but I’ll transfer the decision to Zen 3), cooler and GPU.

CPU wise I’m unsure how much of an impact a 12 core would make (3900X / 5900X?) versus a 8 core (3700X / 5700X?) in image editing. I currently use Lightroom and Photoshop, I’m unsure if that prefers frequency or threads. This will impact the cooler I imagine. I bought a NR200P so have been looking at the Fuma 2, NH-C14S, NH-U9S and Cryorig H7.

MB wise I flit between the MSI B550 ITX board and the Gigabyte B550 ITX board. Not really sure if my use case has much impact on this decision.

GPU I’m looking at either a 1650 Super or a 1660 Super, I really can’t see me using it for gaming too much, but I may drop in every now and again. I don’t need 4K gaming levels that’s for sure. I’m currently just using 14 day Xbox Game Pass Ultimate codes from eBay when I fancy a bit of gaming on my laptop. Currently in my list is the Gigabyte 1660 Super Gaming OC 6G. It’s a good price and has fan stop.

Bits I’ve bought are in the below PCPartPicker list. The PSU is overkill as the SF600 was OOS everywhere and the SF750 was on offer. Noise levels are important to me, so hopefully the SF750 will be less taxed and spin up even less than the SF600 would.

Any input to help my indecision would be much appreciated, this is my first PC build BTW.

Prices outside of US and Europe

I can not tell how much i am jealous of gamers in US and europe. It is 500$ or 500€ and it is only 1/3 of minimum wage in these countries. This is great imo. But for some countries like mine, the thing is a lot much harder. In my country, Turkey, ps5 is expected to be around 7.500 TL which equals to 3x minimum wage (2300 TL).

Since a console is a long term commitment, even though it is pretty expensive, it is buyable for some like me. The real problem is game prices. For US and european gamers prices increased 10$ or 10€. It is annoying but not a deal breaker for them. But for us, 10€ increase means 100TL more (1 TL = 8.9€). Right now, a full game, for example Tlou 2 is 500 TL. For ps5 generations, games will be at least (80€=720 TL) without taxes. This is equal to 1/3 minimum wage in my country.

I can totally understand this is a business and companies has to make profit. But on other platforms prices are more acceptable. For example cyberpunk 2077 is 259 TL (29€) on steam but 429 (48€) on psn store (salute to CDPR). Or xbox game pass ultimate is 45 TL (5€).

My xbox has a manufacture date of 8/2003, is it a 1.6 or 1.5 (and therefore I should snap off the capacitor to prevent damage to the motherboard). Also what game likely came bundled with this device?

So yeah, wondering about 1.6 vs 1.5 and the capacitor issue.

I just pulled the system out of a cabinet, connected it to my receiver via the genuine Microsoft HD pack with the component video cables. Then from my receiver out via HDMI to a projector where I have an adapter installed before the connection to the DVI-Dual port. (so it's an HDMI to DVI adapter). Unfortunately when try to load up a game the sound comes through fine, but the video won't show up unless I go into the Xbox settings and select 480p OFF. (I still leave 720 and 1080 ON), might be because I'm using that adapter because normally DVI-Dual can handle up to 1080...not sure what's making my receiver say "switch the source (xbox) to 480i / interlaced"...

I remember the xbox was a Christmas gift, and based on the manufacture date we probably got it in 12/2003, so not sure what the included game title was back then along with the 1 included controller S...I think Sega GT, not sure if Jet Set Radio Future was also packed in there or if I bought it later separately...

Question about Transcoding

I've seen and heard a lot about Transcoding, and I have a pretty general idea of what it is, however I'm not sure if I have much need to look into improving my Plex server's transcoding capabilities.

I'm running Plex on a dedicated windows 10 pc, with storage spaces for my raid storage, and a pretty healthy amount of ram. I manage the server via vnc, and the server has a hyper-v install on it for acquiring new media. I'm running Sonarr, Radarr, and Tautulli, and nothing else.

I am the primary user, although I do on occasion let a friend stream some items using a Roku. I typically watch via Xbox, iPhone, or the Webapp almost always locally, however I do on occasion stream remotely to my phone if I forgot to sync something. So far I haven't really had any issues with the media playback (Although an occasional file may hiccup, if it was a bad encode or something.) Most of my files are MKV, however I have a few M4V, MP4, and AVI. Most of my media is 720 or 1080. I don't run anything 4k simply because I'm going for a larger library and want to save the space. Plus, to be honest, I'm perfectly content with 720 most of the time.

The video is being handled onboard via the AMD Ryzen 5 cpu with Radeon Vega Graphics built in. So the question is do I need to bother with a dedicated Video Card for Transcoding? Is there much of a benefit there, or am I fine since I'm not sharing out to a large number of users? If I should get a video card, what's the more common, and cost effective recommendations? I tried looking over the Transcoding Cheat Sheet, but honestly it was a bit over my head.

If I do get a video card, do I just drop it in and I'm good to go, or is there any configuration needed? How do I determine how many simultaneous streams I need? In some of the previous threads I've seen talk about a unlocked driver I would need?

Where to get my xbox fixed for cheap?

I purchased a used xbox off of ebay in march. i’m not really a gamer, i only play one or two games so it was perfect. no issues at all. Now i’m at college again and every other second my xbox is frozen. the loading screen is stuck for 30 minutes. i cant even sign in without it freezing after one press of a button. it did work the first week w no issues, but now (& suddenly without change) everything is busted. it is not the controller either, as that was tested. everything has been updated.

The only real difference is at home i used my tv, here i am using a brand new cheap Acer monitor. Other than that, the wifi at college is better and faster. that’s the only differences.

my bf thought maybe the cheap monitor couldn’t handle 1080p, so he put it on 720. but it still doesn’t work (and i was playing it fine for a week on 1080).

i have some game stops by me, i saw they fix consoles but idk how good of a job they do or if it’s a fair price. any recommendations for affordable console fixing? what is a fair price for something like this?

I may know why Elden Ring is taking so long.

They're working on porting it to every console known to man. It's the only explanation, according to 4chan, hundreds of consoles have a port. it's now currently being ported to the Nintendo DS 2 and the Xbox 720. I expect to see an Elden Ring release within the next 20-30 years minimum. Can't wait!

I know I really need a 6 link. I have a Vis Mortis, but can't get it to link more than 3 and used all my linking orbs. SRS is my main source of damage, other minions are there to body block/aggro. Uniques include Lori's Lantern, Sidhebreath, Kaltenhalt, and aforementioned Vis Mortis.

I'm also on Xbox so the market is basically dead and I only have 9 Chaos.

Why are Nintendo and Microsoft so bad at naming their game consoles?

Wii sounded like a penis. Wii U sounded like they are taking about your penis. Xbox One was actually the 3rd Xbox. Series X sounds like a scam because it sounds like they are going to release several different upgrades of their upcoming 4th console like it’s a series of consoles. How can huge successful corporations not get it right ?

To be fair Nintendo Switch is a cool name. But Xbox 720 would have been way better for the “One”.

Cloud Gaming Expected to Generate Over $500 Million in 2020

Even with people’s lukewarm response to Google Stadia, it seems cloud gaming’s future is bright. The global cloud gaming market will generate $585 million this year, video game analytics firm Newzoo predicts in their report. And by 2023, the market is also expected to grow up to 720%, to $4.8 billion. While 2023’s projection could be a stretch, the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown rules definitely have helped its growth this year. But hey, who am I to argue with a report from professional analysts?

Still, with potential revenues that high, it’s no wonder many tech companies are now trying to get their hands into this golden egg basket. From well-known household names such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Nvidia to up-and-coming companies like Parsec. Early this August, the freeware streaming application has partnered up with Ubisoft to help them power their game streaming technology. Parsec showcased the strength of their application in July’s Ubisoft Forward, via a demonstration of live gameplay of Watch Dogs: Legion and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Quoting Fortune, Newzoo analyst Guilherme Fernandes said among all the tech giants Microsoft is the “strongest player right now” thanks to the whole Xbox ecosystem they’ve built and nurtured since the last few years. Their streaming service, xCloud, will be launched and bundled into Xbox Game Pass in mid-September. And in April they’ve hit 10 million subscribers already. It’s just going to get bigger in the near future.

On the other hand, the public is still not convinced Amazon can pull off their cloud gaming service, Tempo. Especially after their in-house developed titles, Crucible and New World, keep garnering negative feedback and releases keep getting delayed. Meanwhile, a lack of exclusives has hindered Google Stadia’s success. “I think Google’s launch of Stadia was a little bit underwhelming because they have not delivered enough content to really get people on board,” said Fernandes.

Fernandes added that he expects the cloud gaming market to gain more momentum as more 5G network adoptions spread all over the world. Obviously increased internet speed should give less latency and smoother experiences, thus making streaming a more appealing alternative to the conventional console or PC gaming.
