Yes, it is a fridge. Yes, it can be described as bland. But, if it is not a marvel of thermal engineering, you clearly have not done your research. You may recall a Linus Tech Tips video where the channel built an off-brand Xbox Series X using the ultra-small NZXT H1 PC case, which clocks in at 829.9 cubic inches, while the Xbox Series X comes in at 459 cubic inches, more than 50% smaller. The Xbox Series X is not a mock PC, and nearly not as big as you think it is. The size comes down to two Gamecubes stacked on top of each other, and, with a mock comparison pictured here, it actually looks awfully small. Here are some more size comparisons (important one). The PS5 is a big boy, with technically inferior hardware. It is impressive that the XSX was able to be so small, especially knowing how much heat these next-gen parts could kick out.
For additional reference, the roughly predicted volume of the PS5 is 549.2 cubic inches, which is bigger than the XSX as you would think. Here is an interactable 3D model.
