XBox naming conventions

This really extends to any naming conventions, but I don't get it. From windows skipping version 9 and staying on 10 for eons, to OSX also remaining on that monicker for even longer, to numbering schemes that are as clear as mud...

I mostly use Ubuntu as an OS these days and the naming is so freaking simple, year and month of release then LTS if it's long term, but using random names or letters that capture nothing of any real value... And I won't go down the path of Appe OSX mountains and cats and places let alone their phones. They've really lost the plot (and so too have I!) LOL

But this is about XBox.

First there was the original XBox, then Xbox 360. Admittedly a better name than XBox 2, but XBox Squared would have been cool. Then cubed etc. That could be cool: XBox3 etx.

Now I didn't expect the next Xbox to be 720 but One was a bit random. Ok so be it. Xbox One.

We've sat on that "generation" for a while now and there have been incremental releases with the One S and then One X...

But after just seeing a random tweet from a Tom Somebody :) he's talking about the next series "Lockhart" as "XBox One Series S"?

Is this the same "Series" as "One S" or is this a new super series? When is it a generation as opposed to whatever the current One S and One X are? Is there seriously going to be an intra generation that is an S and a next generation that's an S as well?

In quickly trying to understand this I'm seeing Series X as well, so I have to assume both S and X are referring to the current generation of just "One", or is it?

I think the penny just dropped and if I am correct then it is more stupid than I even thought possible.

It is now looking to me that the new series are called "Series" and not "One"s at all.

"Series X" and "Series S" to be more correct.

Let's see if I got this:

  • Xbox
  • Xbox 360
  • Xbox One

    includes: * Xbox One S * Xbox One X

  • Xbox Series #

    includes: * Xbox Series S * Xbox Series X

I realise it's not "Xbox Series" by itself but at the same time they're not releasing two "generations" are they?

Seriously confused by these naming conventions.
