In this day in age, with all video game consoles striving to be more powerful and graphically impressive than the last, what would be your reaction if a brand new video game console was released in the same style of the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch--but it was 16bit?
Hypothetical points:
- Being in this generation, it would still utilize HD visuals with an HDMI, and the 16.9 (720/1080) screen ratio.
- Like other modern consoles, could go online and had a menu screen like the Xbox dashboard or PlayStation hub. You could access and purchase/download certain games online as per normal.
- Being online, you could also play with and communicate with other players, even with a microphone. Friends lists, group/party sessions, etc would still be a thing.
- Uses cartridges or maybe a really weird small-memory CD for games.
- Is NOT a retro or vintage console. Is its own completely new thing designed to compete or be placed next to the other three mainstream gaming consoles.
- Could possibly have 16 bit ports of modern games, but that might be a stretch.
- Despite being restricted to 16 bits, somehow has significant performance and CPU, being at 60fps, with the smoothness of sprite animations being vital to maintain it.
- Has its own original games and IPs
- Could possibly hold events and press conferences at conventions like E3.
As you can see, it would essentially be everything you're already used to having, with the simple exception that the console's sound and visuals were intentionally designed to be in 16bit.
As a bonus discussion, would you feel any worse or better about a slightly more powerful console that was intentionally designed to be 32bit, like the PlayStation and Sega Saturn--allowing for polygons and stuff?
I realize pulling this specific kind of technology off might not be possible, but imagine that in another world, somehow, this happens, and it exists. What would you think?
Would you buy a console like this?
Would support a console that purposefully goes backwards in gaming evolution?
Would you disapprove of and criticize it, believing that gaming technology should only be getting stronger?
Do you see it becoming popular and highly regarded, capable of competing with everyone else?
Sorry for the specific topic, its just something I've been thinking about lately.
I personally think it'd be interesting so long as they execute it perfectly and have good games and stuff. Online compatibility would be a must for me. I would also like the idea of a Saturn-style console, probably even more than the 16bit. I think the restrictions would force developers to prioritize gameplay and a certain type of simplicity as opposed to constantly trying to make full-length films and calling them "video games" with graphics so obnoxiously immersive that they make the game hard to understand.
At the same time though, I also would love to see just how impressive and powerful this growing generation will become. If I were given a choice for the next big video game console to either be weaker, simpler, and unique--or more powerful, polished and immersive, I wouldn't be able to choose.
