Why I'm cancelling Stadia for Nintendo Switch

Yes, this is my first post. (Maybe.. I made a post about my experience with Stadia and giving away the second code I got, but I think a bot removed it for not being in the "mega thread". No, I'm not a shill. I lurk on reddit for advice often, but created an account to follow Stadia updates a little easier after I pre-ordered the founders edition.

Ive played all of the free games, but haven't purchased many (just a tomb raider that ended up becoming free later). I've really only spent significant time on the tomb raider series.. just had trouble getting into destiny although it sounds like it would be up my alley, but anyways this is about the experience, not the quality of the content inside the games.

For reference, I live in Las Vegas and have a 300 mb connection which I recently switched to unlimited (an extra $50 a month) because Stadia was sending me over my cap. 90% of my experience has been on a 4k tv, with Chromecast, using my home WiFi on a 5ghz channel.

Stadia has worked great for me. I occasionally get hiccups in connection quality, but they're only for a moment and don't distract from the experience. The input lag for me is non existent. I play a lot of Xbox and the experience did not bug me one bit during streaming, which is pretty incredible. I LOVE not having to download games and the ability to try them instantly with a 2 game hour return policy, and most of all I love the idea of portability, which is one of the main reasons I was excited for Stadia.

Unfortunately, the wifi available outside my house just isnt up to Stadia standards. Opportunities I thought I would use it for, like my wife's obgyn who has notoriously long wait times, don't work because the WiFi is too slow to play. Work WiFi is too slow, and the other free "outside the home" wifis I use just don't cut it. The experience is unusable outside my home network. This part of the experience will vary by user, but for me the portability problem is significant.

I don't have a work / office computer like some folks do to play on. I just saw a post this morning of someone who had to be at work early and just jumped on their work computer to play red dead 2. Awesome. That's what makes Stadia amazing, for the right person.

Anyways at $10 a month, plus an extra $50 for my upgraded unlimited internet, I'm paying $60 a month for something I only use in my living room, and I already have an Xbox one x for that.

That is $720 a year more that I'm paying now, just because of Stadia.

I decided to save the $60 a month and invest in a switch instead. I can play that anywhere, with no internet connection. The trade off is that the same games are not always available on Nintendo's platform. The good news for me is I havent owned a Nintendo product since the 32 bit version. All of these Nintendo exclusives are brand new to me, and give me plenty of games to play on the go. I sound like an advertisement, but Nintendo's $20 yearly online fee let's you download tons of old Nintendo games for free. I know there are emulators to do that free on your phone, ive just never done it. Wish I would have, as replaying these old games is actually entertaining.

It isn't all sunshine. I found out quickly, and after I purchased my switch, that Nintendo games are freaking expensive. $60 a pop for games that are years old (I'm looking at you Splatoon 2). Even the used market sucks. Maybe you get a $10 discount on a 2 year old used game, but often it's only $5 or so if you check GameStop.

Instead, I cancelled my upgraded internet and used the $60 a month ($720 a year) I was saving and got a game fly subscription and a switch. Figure that's way cheaper on a monthly basis, and instead of getting google selected games I can pick and choose what I want, albeit with significantly longer wait times to play. I haven't gotten my first game fly shipment because I just signed up yesterday, but I'm guessing 5 business days and hoping for less. That's not quite as great as click and play.

I think Stadia is more perfected than people give it credit for. I never noticed any input lag, but I don't think our out of home internet has caught up to it. If I had perfect internet everywhere, maybe like 5g, Stadia is the way to go, but I think we're a good year out from that. And at $60 a month (for my specific situation) over 12 months, that's the price of a switch and more.

So I bought the switch, got the portability I want, saved some money, and have Nintendo exclusives to play until internet gets better and Stadia is in a better position to succeed.

With that being said, my last post got removed because I think it had a friend code in it. I won't post it, but if you dm me I will send it your way. Please also post a reply on here that you sent the DM so I don't get multiple messages. Maybe your situation will be better suited for Stadia.

Also for someone else who doesn't get the code, my Claw just arrived today. Not planning on using it anymore since I just bought a switch, so consider this a late Christmas gift. I'll ship it your way if you want it.

If you're on the fence about Stadia, don't take this as a negative review. It's a great service for the right situation, just make sure your situation really is the right one.
