Capturing to external hard disk makes the Xbox controller freeze

Console: Xbox One X

Latest official update as of 2018-10-28: (10.0.17763.2023 rs5_release_xbox_dev_1810.181009-1510)

Controllers tested: Several from model 1708 whites and blacks.

External USB3 HDD used: Tested with 2 different models: Seagate Backup Plus Fast 4TB (STDA4000200) and Seagate 4 TB Game Drive. Both formatted on Windows and SMART checked before using with HD-Tune, drives are in perfect condition. Different USB3 cables also tested. Drive recognized by Xbox as external media storage and set as capture location.

Problem symptoms: Controller freezes while playing or in the dashboard menus. The white X button continues to light but no buttons or movement is registered anymore when in frozen state.

Only ways to unfreeze the controller:

- Remove the batteries, put them back and turn the controller on.

- Press and hold the X button until the controller power-cycles itself, the X button then blinks and gets resynced with the Xbox.

- Wait for several minutes until the controller unfreezes itself. This can take between 5 and 10 minutes.

Troubleshooting process:

- For getting the controller to freeze I usually start a capture to the external hard disk and play FIFA 19 or some other game. There is no specific time for it to freeze. When the freezing happens it is just the controller that is affected, the capture process continues to run fine. You just unfreeze the controller and can continue playing and stop the capture.

- Capture settings: 720 SDR

- The problem is random. There can be several hours of activity before it happens.

- I have run several capture sessions before the controller freezing problem arises.

- Once the controller freezing happens one time it continues to freeze often until the Xbox is fully turned off using the Settings - Power & Startup - Turn off or restart - Full shutdown.

- I have totally reseted the Xbox deleting everything and the problem is still present.

- I have tested with 2 different Xbox One X consoles (one of them totally new) and the problem is present on both, different controllers have been also tested (model 1708).

- I have disconnected the external hard disk from the Xbox One and it has been running fine for 5 days without a single controller freeze.

- The only other external peripheral that has been connected to the Xbox all the time is an Astro A20 wireless headset.

I have reported the problem using the Xbox Insiders app from inside the Xbox. I have also been in contact with Microsoft support on the phone and they encourage me to use the Xbox Insiders program to try to find a solution because they didn't know what to do.

Really don't know what to do. This issue is killing the fun of using the console. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Should I trade in my OG Xbox One for the X with the GameStop promo or get a TV better than 720p?

Like the title says, I don’t know what to upgrade or if I should even bother. I have the blue Forza 1TB Xbox one connected to a 720p TV. I bought Red Dead the other night and have been getting OCD trying to make the picture quality less blurry.

I haven’t barely played my Xbox in the past 1-2 years as I mostly play on my laptop with friends. The laptop is getting dated and was already low end 2 years ago so any big AAA game I usually get on console instead.

I really want to play the PS4 exclusives like God of War 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn. I had the OG PS4 and traded it for the Xbox because I missed Halo. Now I miss the PS4 because Xbox doesn’t have enough exclusives imo.

The One X looks amazing though. There’s no denying that. I only have like 3 friends that play Xbox and a couple more on PS4. Most have a PC though. People that upgraded, was it worth it? I can get $200 off the Xbox one x bundle with red dead and fallout for a total of $260+tax. The deal ends TOMORROW though.

What’s your opinions guys? Is it worth upgrading or would you get a OG PS4 and wait for the next gen consoles? Or would a new TV give me better results than the X on 720?

Awesome first thing where you flip the horse into a 720 and land on the train? That. Post that.

That is something that I'd like to see.

But for the love of God NOBODY GIVES A SHIT ABOUT YOUR GAME PACKAGE OR LOAD TIME.

Low quality/quality change when streaming via Xbox?

My stream keeps changing to 480 from 720 and vice versa.

It’s wired and keeps lagging. Anyone have a fix? I have an original Xbox one
