Recommendations for general around the home use, netflix, spotify, GIMP, Libre Office/Google Docs, maybe gaming if it could be worth it. Budget up to $850 US.

Hoi hoi,

First I realized that I didn't have my budget in the title, so I deleted my post. Then my post was deleted because it contained affiliate links since I just copy and pasted from recommendations I found elsewhere in this sub. Now, I am back for a third time and hopefully everything is correct.

I am looking for a new laptop for myself. I've found a few on my own that I think I am interested, but I would like the advice of others who are more knowledgeable. The computers I am looking at now in no partcular order are:

  1. Ideapad 720S (13”, AMD)-$799 and $20 off

  2. Slightly different 720S-$650

  3. ASUS ZenBook 13 Ultra-Slim Laptop, 13.3- 2017 version-$750, 2018 version-$800

  4. Acer Swift 3 SF314-52G-55WQ 14.0"-$676 This is from newegg, so I don't know how wary I should be of ordering from there at the moment.

  5. XPS 13-$784

  6. ASUS VivoBook S-$799

My general guidelines are below if anyone has different recommendations.

  • Total budget and country of purchase: $~850, USA

  • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I am open to the 2 in 1 form, but it is not a necessity. If it is worth it, sure, but I don't want it simply for the novelty factor. Battery life is important enough, but not a be all or end all as I'll most likely be using it in a place that I can easily plug it in. I probably don't want a touch screen unless it is with some amazing 2 in 1 that someone suggests. I'd like a good chassis, keyboard, and screen. Overall, best specs and overall value for the money will be king.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Nice, but I could live with a thicker laptop.

  • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I usually use windows, but I could be swayed to another OS.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-16"

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will probably be using GIMP for design and editing. I might get photoshop elements, but it isn't that essential. Games would be fun, but looking at the gpus that seem to go with laptops in my price range, I don't know if it is really worth it to even try or if I should just be happy with skyrim on xbox 360 for the time being while I save up for a desktop.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Like I said above, could be interested, but not convinced it's worth trying to find a decent setup at my price range.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, chassis, screen, sound, build quality, and overall value are the most important things. Anything else is really icing on the cake. Good inputs would be nice and so would ability to play movies from the computer on the tv. Please no touch screens unless I have to.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would consider used/refurbished laptops, if they are coming from a reputable source and I can be certain it will be in good shape. Thanks for the input!
