Reviews

IGN Netherlands - Sander Noordijk - 8 / 10

Bayonetta 2 is an amazing game, with brutal, yet complex action in an intense over the top game. Stringing combos together and activating Witch Time at just the right time still feels amazing, and the Switch version is by no means inferior to the original.

Note: The reviewer pretty much just repeated the review he wrote for Bayonetta 2's Wii U release, and gave the exact same score etc. As such, this review is strictly about Bayonetta 2, not the first Bayonetta.

Destructoid - CJ Andriessen - 8 / 10

The core of Bayonetta remains as solid and frustrating as it was when it first released. It lacks the polish, semi-coherent story, and rich color palette of its superior sequel, sure, but it’s so masterfully designed and brazen in its direction that it’s still a must play for every action game fanatic. While the Switch port may lack the exhaustive resolution and graphics options of the PC version, it’s an absolute knock-out as a portable action game and further proof there seems to be very little the Switch is incapable of doing.

Note: This review is strictly about the first Bayonetta.

GameSpew - Richard Seagrave - 8 / 10

Put simply, if you're a fan of the series, Bayonetta 1 & 2 are essential on the Nintendo Switch, especially if, like me, you only plan to play them in handheld mode. It's undeniably disappointing that they're less attractive in docked mode, but nevertheless they're still wildly enjoyable and engaging, just not as sharp as you'd probably expect.

Everyeye - Giuseppe Arace - Italian - 8.3 / 10

On Switch, the two chapters of Bayonetta find their ideal refuge, adapting adequately to the rhythms of portability and maintaining a remarkable fluidity during the action.

Merisation - Salva Fernández - Spanish - 8.5 / 10

Bayonetta 1+2 is one of the best hack and slash compilation in terms of gameplay and looks fantastic in handheld mode. However, it isn't polished in dock mode with only 720p and excessive jaggies.

Critical Hit - Alessandro Barbosa - 8.5 / 10

Though the first game’s starting to show its age as far as visuals go, the relentless action remains timeless. Fast, frantic and frivolously fun, it’s still worth playing. The sequel, however, improves upon everything; deliver a more focused, more nuanced and more refined. It’s a glorious masterclass in design and flow.

We Got This Covered - David Morgan - 9 / 10

Bayonetta 1+2 are spectacular entries in the hack-and-slash genre, and playing them on the go is a surreal experience that vastly diversifies the Switch's library. Rewarding skillful play with gorgeous, satisfying action while being thematically engrossing, these games are a breath of fresh air, even today.

Trusted Reviews - Jordan King - 9 / 10

Being able to play two of Platinum Games’ finest efforts whenever you like is hugely appealing, and the abundance of content on offer here only makes it even better. It’s somewhat disheartening that neither game has received any significant improvements beyond amiibo support and slightly better performance, especially since the Switch has proven it’s capable of far more.

Digitally Downloaded - Matthew Sainsbury - 9 / 10

The main thing is the developers haven’t messed with the content. Because almost no one bought the Wii U, few people had the chance to play Bayonetta 2. With Bayonetta 3 on the horizon, giving people a chance to catch up is a really good idea on Nintendo’s part. That’s why these ports have been released, and they’re that good that, even if you were one of the few with a Wii U, you may as well buy them again.

CGMagazine - Jordan Biordi - 9 / 10

Bayonetta & Bayonetta 2 are a perfect witch’s brew of fun and functionality on the Switch.

AreaJugones - Álvaro Giménez - Spanish - 9 / 10

Bayonetta 1 & 2 is the perfect choice if you have not had the chance to play them previously. Its style fits perfectly with the Nintendo Switch controls and the quality of both games is still amazing.

Vooks - Steven Impson - 10 / 10

Stylish, spectacular, and satisfying, the Bayonetta games are among the best action titles I’ve ever played.

Press Start Australia - Shannon Grixti - 10 / 10

Bayonetta herself is one of the sassiest characters in gaming and the combat is simply better than any hack and slash action game that I've ever played (and still is to this day). The game is only made better by the enhanced performance and portability provided by the Nintendo Switch and it's one that every Switch owner should have in their collection.

GameXplain - Daan Koopman - Loved

Overall though, it's just incredibly impressive how the action remains so fun on the go. If you ever thought about playing Bayonetta 1 & 2, you should do so now. The updated versions of the games are the best out there, and naturally can be taken with you anywhere. The games have some nitpicks, but they can be forgiven in the grand scheme of things.
