Just to start, the only gaming I ever did on an xbox one was like at Best buy or something as I was walking through the store. So essentially, I have only ever gamed on my 360 for the last 10 years(including a bit on my Macbook).
So I wanted to do a little review for other 360 users that are considering the X or the S. In short, if you still are using a 360 today you will probably be happy spending half the amount on the S. The reason I say that is because if you still have a 360 like I did, then the graphics you get on the X aren't going to matter that much. I can't even tell the difference between 4k/1080/720 when i switch between those settings.
Should you upgrade away from the 360? Yes, absolutely but don't expect to all of a sudden have a totally different gaming experience. I play mostly first person shooters and the feel of the games didn't change much. I played black ops III on both and they feel EXACTLY the same. There is more to the xbox one version but the feel of gameplay doesn't change at all. I read a lot of stuff about improved frame rates and reduced stutter. I just don't notice any of that stuff enough to care.
The main reason I decided to get the X is because I intend to make it last for another 8-10 years like I did with the 360. If that isn't your plan then I would get a cheap used S for $200 off someone and take your savings to buy some games.
To everyone that is going to be pissed that I'm reviewing the X negatively...I get how good the system is. Its got top notch frame rates and 4k textures....I get it. But to someone like myself...incremental changes like that don't matter much. Call me in another 10 years when I can make another big jump and I will be happy.
tl;dr casual gamers that don't care much about graphics still need to upgrade but you will be just as happy with the Xbox S as you would be with the X. Only reason the get the X would be for longevity reasons.
