So, I have trouble deciding based just on the obvious specs, so I'd like to know if there are some finer points I'm missing.
I'm mostly interested in sport simulations and racing games and I have an HD ready (720p) TV that I'm not seriously intending to upgrade in the nearer future.
The games I'm currently interested in are available on both consoles, with the exception of the racing game, where it will probably come down to Forza (Xbox) vs Driveclub (PS).
When I next have the opportunity, I will test out the controllers for each console. I have stubby fingers and the Xbox controller looks hugely uncomfortable on pictures. I also very much prefer 4-way buttons to analog sticks.
What interests me most about the Xbox is the backwards compability as I wouldn't mind playing older games (Tony Hawk, Kelly Slater, Mat Hoffman). I don't have physical copies of any of those whatsoever; haven't had a console since the PS1. However, does the backwards compability cover each and every game or just some specific titles?
I assume that both consoles are fine if I want to play exclusively offline/don't want it to have to maintain a constant internet connection, correct?
Are there any grave differences with regards to apps? If the possibility exists, I'd really like to use the console for YouTube, Netflix, general streaming services, general web browsing, watching TV and recording from TV (I'm currently using a different service for the latter two, but it's unreliable and it'd be nice to ditch it). I live in Germany, in case that has any impact on the availability of stuff.
Is there anything else that I should be taking into account?
